New PC, I have questions - (current specs + new specs)

Hi everyone,

I have been looking at seriously investing in a bit of a 'future proof' gaming PC which would double up as a bit of a multi purpose home life admin PC to replace my current set up. My requirements have changed somewhat and I currently own the following;-

laptop with Intel Core i7-8750H , NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile, 16gb RAM, Storage. 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD + it's connected to an Acer VG 240Y Monitor via HDMI.

I have been playing around with the custom specification tool on PC Specialist after being recommended this website by a few friends who have purchased some PC's at different values/specs/designs. I was hoping to show you the spec I had build below and then ask a few questions if possible..

<new potential build spec posted in comments below>

I think this build is more than adequate for my needs but I had some questions for people who know more than myself...

1) I couldn't really see a mega difference betwen the 14900KF and the normal 14900 ?
2) Is it possible to drop down to something like an i7 13700 KF or i7 13700 without throttling the GPU or decreasing performance?
3) I really want to stretch to the 4090 but the budget might not allow it, is there an obvious error with going for the 4080, or would a 4070Ti be better and then wait for the 5xxx series?
4) Is the RAM and HDD/SSD set up optimal?

Way back in the AMD K6-2 500 days back around 1998 - 2000 I was able to build a PC and along with my trusty RIVA TNT2 I could take on the world of gaming quite confidently, unfortunately some of the more advanced nuances like cooling, overclocking (not that interested in) and some of the more modern technical aspects I am not that understanding of.

Any advice on tweaks as well as the questions above would be most helpful!

Thank you in advance.

Thank you, this is what is required, so what is the budget and do you intend upgrading the monitor as this would be a waste of money with your existing monitor, and if you want best bang for your buck then AMD is the way to go

Apologies, it's quite frustrating for us sometimes, it's amazing how many times we post a well laid out post on how to go about posting, and then people just fall to read it.

We're happy to go over it though, just bear in mind for the future, it can get really frustrating from our side sometimes and people just lose patience.

In general terms I don't have a budget, I have some money which I have been saving for a PC that can give me longevity which I know is quite vague. I guess from my original post with my set questions I didn't mention that if the 4080 is viable as an option then I would use the money I am saving on the 4090 for an upgraded monitor (and what would people recommend).

Thank you.

I can appreciate that, I just popped in for some help as the 'custom pc building' tool actively suggests you come to the forum to post the spec and discuss. I am extremely thankful for anyone's input and time spent helping.

We'd need a fixed budget to be able to give any advice. You really need to help us out here. This is exactly why that document was drawn up, to avoid all this totally unnecessary back and forth. If your budget is 30k, then say that, if it's 200, then say that. We have nothing to work to otherwise.

If you were purchasing this, you'd need an entirely different monitor which would cost between £600 and several thousand.

Were you planning on upgrading the monitor?

We wouldn't suggest an intel platform anyway as they're now the poor performers in the industry for many reasons.

I’ll lock this. Were happy to give advice to anyone, but you need to follow the forum rules, read the newcomers section before posting which includes what’s required for us to give any advice.

It doesn’t matter if you think it’s needless information, it may well be to you and even other forums, but for this forum it’s the basic requirements for you to get the best bang for your buck.

We don’t care about getting a sale, it’s all gamers and techies who are passionate about people getting the best system for their needs.
