New PC Freezing and Resetting

Hi everybody.

I have got a new PC mainly to mod games on such as Skyrim and Fallout, but every time I try to play any modded game with some kind of high demand my PC freezes then resets which is frustrating because I've not even had it a week. I admit I know nothing about computers really so have limited knowledge but I suspect the graphics card is the issue. Hopefully somebody can help me.

I don't seem to have an Minidumps folder for some reason, but I managed to get everything else. I have uploaded the files Here please let me know if you cant access it because I've never shared anything this way before.

Apart from lots of errors reporting that the AsusFanControlService couldn't start, there's nothing in your System log to indicate why it's been crashing. You don't have any dumps because it's not been BSODing, just crashing (there are no WER bugcheck errors in the log).

In your Application log however, there are errors for a several apps with exception codes of 0xC0000005 (memory access violations) and 0xC0000FD (stack overflow [guard page creation failed]).

When you put all that together the most likely cause is a RAM issue. Since it's a new PC the first thing to try is to remove the two RAM cards, check that everything is clean on the cards and in the slots (DO NOT blow with your mouth!) and then re-insert them fully. See how that goes.

If you still get crashes then download Memtest86, make a bootable USB drive using the extracted tool, and then boot that USB drive. Memtest will start running as soon as it boots. If no errors are reported when it's finished the four iterations of the 13 different tests, then restart Memtest and do another four iterations.

PCS built it and they had RAM issues while testing it, originally it was supposed to have 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB) but I was advised to change it because they said the current RAM worked perfectly. Is the AsusFanControlService something I should worry about? I ask because when I got my PC and turned it one the first time it was very loud and sounded like something rubbing together. I opened it and noticed the support bracket for the graphics card was rubbing up against the fan on the card, also there was a random screw that looked like the same one from the case stuck in the power cover. I will try the things you recommended, thank you.

AsusFanControlService is probably running and controlling your fan curves for any fans connected to fan headers. So in the absence of any other fan software, you can use it (probably via the Armoury Crate interface) or remove it and just use the BIOS to configure fan curves.

As to support bracket, I suspect it shifted in transit and one of the GPU fans was in contact with it. Just check that the fan blades are not damaged in anyway.

Have you a photo of this random screw? I'd like to understand what you mean by "stuck in the power cover" better.

Given the issues there have been with the 7800x3D and RAM, personally I'd switch EXPO off in the BIOS to test (EXPO is the overclock on the RAM and without it, the RAM will just run at it's default speed, probably 4800MHz). May be unrelated but worth trying
I would very much agree, and check what BIOS version you’re on through system information

I have a picture of the screw, like I mentioned it is the same thumb screw as the case, I did remove it though but it was stuck in one of the triangular slots in the metal casing over the power inlet. 20230611_121703.jpg20230611_121843.jpg

I can try this but I'd have to look up how to turn it off. Right now I have only used the windows built-in memory diagnostic tool because I have no spare USB to use Memtest86 yet. The windows tool never came back with any issues.

BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 1618, 18/05/2023 is whats showing up in my system

I turned off expo then tried to run a heavily modded Skyrim and still got the same issue, the game runs for about 5 mins then a black screen with the sound stuttering then after about 10 seconds the PC restarts. I also tried a quick SFC scan to see if they would fix anything, while it did find some corrupted files and fixed them, it didn't fix my issue. I have read online that people are having issues with the latest couple of AMD Adrenalin updates, but nothing like this I don't think.

Did you reseat the RAM?

TBH I would wait and see whether reseating the RAM fixes the issue. Only run Memtest if you still get crashes.

I removed my RAM and graphics card and cleaned the area with a can of air, then tried running the games again. I managed to play for a good 2 hours before it crashed again. So I ran the Memtest86 and everything seems to be fine with the memory at least.

Can you post a screenshot of your optional updates page? And your EXPO settings?
I'm currently at work but I can tell you that I have all Windows updates downloaded along with the optional ones and I turned expo off but I've put it back on again. I think I'm just going to phone up PCS and ask them to look at it, I shouldn't be having issues like this within the first week of getting the PC.

It's up to you, just be aware an RMA can take a while.

Hi, just an update if anybody else seems to have this issue. I have been in touch with PCS and after multiple benchmarks, stress tests, re-installing drivers and windows I still have the issue and it seems like they don't know what else to do seeing I've not heard back from them in a couple of days now. Hopefully nobody else gets this issue, but if you want a new PC don't get the same build as me unless you want an expensive desk ornament.
