New Mac Studio M4 Max

Was going to pre-order a new Mac Studio M4 Max as a birthday present for myself (to arrive today, March 12th)...but I couldn't get a clear answer as to whether the SSD in the 512GB model was 'handicapped' like it was in the M2 Mac (due to increasing the NAND chip sizes, but halving the amount, so halving the throughput).

Asked the 'Apple Sales Experts' who didn't know, who then passed me onto the 'Apple Tech Experts' who didn't know...so I cancelled my order and trade-in.

Just found out that they fixed that issue (due to uproar around it), and went to order another to be told it could be 2-3 weeks for the custom-build I wanted (M4 Max, 16-CPU, 40-GPU, 48GB RAM, 512GB SSD), so thought I'd wait and see if Costco would have their usual deals.

Nothing on the Costco website yet, but the older versions are still at their normal 10% less than Apple (plus I get 2% cash back as a Costco Executive member)...but I don't know how long I'd have to wait for the M4 version, and wouldn't know what configs they'd offer either...and the value of my trade in will continue to drop as the M1 versions being replaced hit the used market.

Then I got an email from a friend who's just ordered an M4 Max MacBook Pro, and he told me that KRCS were doing launch offers on the new M4 Mac Studio...so quickly got a CTO (configure to order) placed with them for 10% less than the Apple RRP.

Makes a change to get a discount on an expensive new launch...despite it being Apple...and not having to pay +30-50% scalper prices for it.

Do you know if the SSD is modular like on the M4 Mac Mini? Because if so there are 3rd party SSDs that fit.

A 2Tb drive is around $270 to $300

Yes, it's the same proprietary Apple modular type...with the proprietary onboard controller.

Same process to put larger/additional NAND chips on it...but I just need 1TB internally as all my other fast storage is connected via Thunderbolt already. This will just mean I can process more on the internal SSD before having to move it over to the slower external drives (until I upgrade external stuff to TB5 enclosures and gen5 SSDs some time in the next 10 years...or never).

Also available are second hand Apple modules (£350 for 2TB)...

I could always get the official Apple DIY replacement for £400...
