New Gaming PC

Hi all,

Looking to upgrade my gaming PC and keep it reasonably future-proof for a few years - particularly on the GPU side, hence the 3080ti.

Gone a little above what I need on the PSU intentionally but think I have gone a bit overboard with the RAM and can probably drop that down to 32GB?

Monitor is 1440p at 144hz, 16:9.

Budget is £3-4k but can probably go a little higher if the value is there.

Any comments or suggestions would be great!

You can definitely do better than this: first and most importantly, by moving away from the X299 platform, which is a bad platform especially for gaming. Intel's mainstream twelfth generation is where you want to be. And then there are a host of other changes I'd suggest (RAM, storage, cooling in particular).

But the biggest thing is the display. 1440p 144Hz is lovely (it's what I have) but this system is grossly overpowered for it. What actual display do you have? It might be worth considering an upgrade if you have this kind of budget. A 3080 Ti is a waste of money for a 1440p 144Hz display: you won't see signficant performance increases over a 3070 because the display is just not capable of it.

You could get a 4K 144Hz display for around £750, and then a £3000-3200 top-of-the-line system for a thorough rig overhaul that will do you far better than you're currently looking at!

Thanks for the comment!

Yes a monitor upgrade is definitely next on the list! I'm just getting this part of it sorted first and will then get a new monitor at a later date.

I would pick another motherboard however the only other option on the list is the Gigabyte x299 UD4 Pro, and of the two I would prefer the ASUS :)

You said that you've got a budget of up to 4k so there's room in the above for a monster monitor as well. If you want to stay in standard 16:9 resolution monitors like the Gigabyte M28U or M32U are great options. If you're not playing competitive e-sports titles you should also consider the Samsung G9, a behemoth 32:9 display which is unparalleled in immersion.

This gives you a modern Intel CPU that gives top gaming performance, downgraded to 32GB of fast RAM that will cover you for games.
Readjusted your storage with a super fast drive for OS and programs, the Intel drive for games, and the HDD for general storage such as photos and music.
Given you a modern cooler with plenty of RGB loveliness, the H100x is a few years old now and you need a hefty updated design to deal with the heat that the 11700k puts out. The Arctic paste isn't needed as the corsair coolers come with high quality paste pre-applied.
Finally, when dealing with a build this expensive spending £5 on silver warranty is well worth it.

That's great, thank you very much for the advice :)

Out of curiosity, why go for the i7 over an i9?

I also take it that Windows 11 isn't recommended at the moment?

For your uses, the i7 would be more than adequate. Eight performance cores is plenty for gaming and the four e-cores won’t be utilised. It seems to match the i9 for gaming performance so it’s the sensible choice 👍

As Windows 11 is still a baby it’s got teething issues so sticking with 10 gives you a much more stable platform.

The i7 selected by @MrWilson is 2 generations newer than the i9 you originally selecte.
