New gaming PC incoming, will this be ok?

I built a PC through PCSpecialist in 2020 and it has served me really well. I am looking to go through the process again and below is a build i put together. I also made a very similar build using the overclocked configurator which has a white cooler that would be asthetically better but the the motherboard option there is the TUF X870-Plus rather than the Gigabyte X870E. I assume both boards are pretty similar and the choice there might come down to the white option on the cooler.

I am holding off on purchasing until the 5000 series drops at the end of the month and depending on prices will pick one of those cards instead of the listed 4080. this is why i opted for the 1200w power supply, would this be needed or is an 850W sufficient. looking to futureproof a bit anyways.

On my current rig i have the same curved monitor or at least the model from 4 years ago which i have really enjoyed. I have put 2 monitors on this build as i may keep my older pc running at another address but do wish to have 2 monitors. Someone here might have better suggestions for monitors but the aim is at least 1440p gaming.

I looked over a few post from the last week or so here to base some of these choices (eg the M.2 options and motherboard choices over the more expesive ROG boards) I also wondered if there would be benefit to going of a Ryzen 9 chip? thoughts? The case is changable, I just picked it as i liked the design and kinda want to go for a white finish but thats not important, esp if I am unable to select white components.

Choices like the gaming chair and prepherials are just there to keep it all in 1 order as my current equiptment is knackered but if someone has some recommendations or links to some good deals on those pieces I would love a look.

The system will prodominatly be for gaming and my all in budget is around £4000 with the preperials/chair etc. Its a loose budget but i think i can stay within it.

As stated i will hold off until the new cards are available but would love a little bit of input while we wait for that.

Can I ask why you’re replacing your current Pc so early on? It’s not even half way through its lifetime and would be able to support upgrades to bring it up to modern standards?

Hello Spyder, I remember you helped me the first time, much appreciated.

so there are 2 reasons... 3 out of the 4 ram slots on my current mobo have quit working. this was my own doing, unintentionally when messing with RAM configurations a little while ago(I thought I knew what I was doing but just made a mistake with it). I am down to a single stick of 16gb, which works just fine tbh. to upgrade in was thinking I wanted a new mobo, chip and gfx card.. I have the 2nd stick of ram to make it up to 32gb... by the time I look at upgrading then I was thinking I might as well keep the old system and build a new one.

the 2nd reason is that my time is between 2 addresses, my own and my parents so having 2 setups is not a bad idea.. and in the event that I'm at a single address my girlfriend would use my 2nd setup or id use it as a streaming pc or something else.. it still works well even with only 1 working stick of RAM.

It's the Girlfriend who's actually kinda pushing me to get a new top end system (not that it would take me much convincing).

Why on earth didn't you RMA it at the time???? That's what a big bulk of the price you're paying is going towards, it's insane people don't use that service. You'd still have that option but it wouldn't be covered by warranty, you'd have to pay for parts and labour. If you'd done it while your warranty was still active, the labour would have been covered.

This makes sense

IMHO, 1440p would be a waste at this level, I'd be looking at OLED ultrawide, or Superwide personally if considering a 5080 (which I would agree is worth it price wise over the 4080 Super)

What kinds of games do you play?

JasMyr

RMA? this like a returns and repair type service I guess. yea probably a wiser choice.. I'm not know for my wise instincts..

I play all sorts.. currently on the Rivals train. play Fortnite and Cod, Diablo, BG3. I'm fairly multi game. the more gfx dependent titles struggle a little on my current system. I can usually pull out a competitive FPS on the multiplayer titles setting stuff to the floor.

I saw your suggestion on that Alienware monitor in another post somewhere.
The Alienware is the king still if only for gaming, but it’s a first gen panel and they had issues with text clarity, so depends on your needs but if you wanted something more general purpose like reading web pages, there may be better options around the same price

Cool, so an all rounder. I would definitely say ultra wide is the way to go, it’s far more immersive than standard aspect ratio and basically any modern game supports it and now with so many classic games having had remasters, they support it too. It’s not like a few years ago when lots of games didn’t support it.

In FPS games you’ll see enemies coming in from the sides earlier so you get an advantage there. With OLED also, as the pixel is true on or off unlike LCD, the contrast is to die for, so in a dark scene with concentrated light sources like a torch or street lamp, you don’t get any blooming or halo effect at all, so it just looks so damn precise. That also helps with accuracy.

The build itself is absolutely spot on (with the 5080 in mind). If it were me, I’d put a preorder in when you can on Scan for a 5080 founders edition, they’ll be cheaper than aftermarket cards £979

How much did that build come to and we can factor in a monitor? (obviously remembering chair etc)

without monitors and assuming a similar priced GPU, it was £3320 or there abouts.

I am keen to have 2 monitors due to the usefulness of having somewhere else to view stuff (guides, YouTube, Spotify) while in full screen applications.

Second monitor can just be a basic panel as it won't be benefitting from high refresh rate, you can pick up a standard even 4k panel for very little money these days.

I've removed most of the peripherals from the spec as A:, you can get far better for the cost, and B: things like the chair are £50 cheaper from elsewhere as there is currently a deal on

I've left the Razer Gigantus mouse mat as that's a pretty good deal through PCS and it's a decent mouse mat.

PCS are currently charging £1046 for the 4080, so assuming you were able to pick up a founders edition, there would be a further saving there, and I've simply added 4 case fans, one for the rear, 3 for top / bottom just to increase airflow. These 5000 series cards don't direct any air out of the rear of the card and case, it's all pumped upwards into the case, so it's worth going overboard on the cooling.

For monitors, check out this video, Ultrawide is at 12:18 and it gives the best options. If they state price was too high, do have a look at current prices because especially after new panels being announced at CES at the beginning of january, prices have already shifted

For the chair, that same model is £50 cheaper elsewhere like here:

For a mouse and keyboard, we'll evaluate your budget once you've got all the above decided.

So looking over that, if i was to plump for an ultrawide, the Alienware seems to come in at the best price point. I will give it a few days until the 5080 goes on sale.

As far as the chair and stuff goes, i only picked that due to how i had budgeted with the other monitors selected. going a different direction i will happily find something on amazon in the £100 price range.

I also thought about extra fans so im glad to see that it was a valid thought. As far as the liquid cooler goes. There is no option for the white H150i ELITE in this build but it can be found with other builds. Do you think its possible for them to use the white model if i gave them a call about the order?

Just in case it’s happening for you too, when clicking the configuration link it’s loading an 850w PSU but I had selected the 1200w shift which is important for this build

The Alienware is a fantastic monitor and a great price now.

That chair is very decent at £150, it’s the minimum I would personally go, under that you sacrifice the build quality and things like the wheel branches just snap and other things like that. The cheap ones are also bad for your back

So I tried to get a FE edition 5080. but have been unable to pre order before today and then they just sold out so fast on scan. (didn't even get the option to put in my basket on scan or Nvidia website).. I will try look again over the next 24 hours but I expect the same result.

I saw the 5080 option now In configurators on site so put this build together..

I am still umming about monitor (ultrawide 34" or 4k 32") but I will get a decent one after looking over many reviews.

decided on the black colour scheme for this build as the white options is £100+ more... I would want to order soon while cards are available..

what we reckon?.. on reviews I have also wo bdered hard about 5080 Vs 4080S but as Its a new build and not an upgrade it's probably best for 5080.

it's all good, thank you very much for the advice and pointers. this forum has always been a great resource when building a new rig.

I can find my way from here. I just have to land on which monitor to go with and the peripherals. I'm torn between the 2 Alienware models.. either the ultrawide or 32" 4K. and then I think perhaps I go back to a top drawer Flat panel. I just don't know what's going to be best

MrWilson

Godlike
FWIW, I was debating between the Alienware Ultrawide and this option from Gigabyte. Currently available for £649. It's referenced in the video above where it's criticised due to its initial price point being $300 higher than the Alienware option, but in the UK it's currently the cheaper of the two.

There's no real wrong answer on what you're looking at, but happy to let you know how I get in with the monitor, it should be arriving sometime next week.
