New Gaming PC Advice

Hi all,

In light of all the intel news that has come out today, I've (hopefully) cancelled an order with pcspecialist and am looking to have some advice on what I should look to now.

I will attempt to post what I had originally intended to order in the form of a screenshot I had proudly been sending to some friends, but again, due to recent news I am after some advice on how to proceed.

The budget I have is around £1500-1600. The order I previously had ran around 1550.

Basically, I want the same gpu etc, but will need an equally performing amd cpu.

Please can anyone advise?

I'm mostly an fps gamer. I play destiny 2 religiously and is my bread and butter in terms of what I really want to run perfectly, but I am interested in other titles such as cyberpunk, forza and minecraft.

If you need to know anything else before making a suggestion please ask and I'll reply as fast as I can.

Please check my first post, I think I've edited it with everything that's needed?
There's no way you'll be able to get something to power 4k 144Hz at £1600, you'd be looking over 2k for something suitable.

What you've configured above isn't suitable as it is, you'd have to spend far more to get it road worthy, all the money is in the GPU without the rest of the platform to support it.

We need to manage your expectations here and point out the shortcomings of the system that you specced. Low-balling most of the spec in order to select a performance GPU is not the way any of us would recommend you spend your money. The first part of the PC you will replace is the GPU and the only way this makes sense is if the rest of the PC supports modern upgrades. The Intel selection won't be a good choice for this, the DDR4 selection won't be a good choice for this. You have massively underspent on the power unit for the system, 750w basic PSU isn't going to cut it, you need a modern 750w PSU or an older gen 1000w PSU to have any sort of headroom.

4k gaming isn't going to be good on a 4070. You would want a 4070Ti Super as a minimum nowadays. The next generation cards will be out from Nvidia before the end of the year. You will be able to play at 4k with such a card but you're going to need to dial down the settings and you aren't going to be hitting high FPS targets over 120hz (which is what we would like to have).

With those limitations in mind and with a strict budget of £1600, this is the best I can manage. I would strongly advise going over the budget a little and opting for the 4070 Super, it's a good bit more performance for around £50. Actual entry 4k would involve a 4070 Ti Super which would add over £250.

Unfortunately you have under-estimated the costs of a true 4k gaming rig. A high end offering would be closer to £3k. The main components are so expensive nowadays. If I was spending on a 4k system nowadays, even trying to be frugal, the below is what I would want. Note that the next generation chips are out from AMD in a couple of weeks. This may offer more performance for the same money or even bring the current prices down. If you can hold off until then it may be worthwhile.

You can see this is where you hit the £2k+ mentioned previously. As stated, it's still low-balling for ideal as the 4080 Super would be the ideal 4k card. I would also want the 1200w Shift in the system also, but 1000w can just about cover the spikes of the below.
