OK - some questions first.

i) Definitely want a laptop - not a desktop?

ii) If laptop, how 'portable' do you need it. ie battery life a priority? - if so, then might be disappointed as most gaming laptops dont last long.

iii) Size - 15 or 17 inch screen? not a lot of difference in price to be honest.

iv) what other things will you use laptop for - any spreadsheets / calculations / video conferencing / editing photos / editing videos etc? ?

v) what was the laptop that you tried looking at to amend?

vi) any other features needed?

I would be using the laptop for university. This would consist mostly of essays so shouldn't be affected in performance. Preference for battery life would be to have atleast 8 hours but I'm not sure how applicable that is.

The reason for a laptop is for portable uni use and for games. I was thinking about a desktop but with a 4k monitor apparently I'm looking at 1.5k to make a decent one.

17" screen would be better.

Features really that I would need is bluetooth and wifi really. Can't think of anything else. Don't need disk drive either.

Just checking. What course are you doing. Anything likely to require its own software or as you say just the essays?

You won’t get an 8hour battery on a gaming laptop. Even if you are just using ‘Office’ mode the gaming laptops are lucky to last 4 to 5 hours. Would this be a problem? Would you need one you can swap battery in and out and therefore buy a second battery?

Sorry to ask so many questions but with variety on offer at moment just want to make sure you get the right one recommended.

From my experience the best you can get from office workloads on those 'custom gaming laptops' will be best case 7 hours, no more, and this with 20-25% brightness no more. This is my experience with the Ionico 17.

This applies for laptops with 90+ mAh battery (Ionico, Recoil 15). Anything lower and you scale it down.

I am specificly referring to those laptops with enough horsepower (e.g. including a discrete Graphics card, together with the integrated GPU).
I am no prepared to discuss any PCS laptop PCS sell without discrete graphics.

The battery life isn't critical just one of those things it's just more practical. My course doesn't require any software programming so it's just essay's

Ive put together a laptop that is around 1,150. Was wondering if this laptop would run games like rust and heavily modded minecraft. Is there any changes that i can make that is better or cheaper?

Any advice appreciated

When looking at laptops, you need to think more about specing as high a GPU as you can and how well it deals with heat and airflow, especially with gaming. I would add the arctic thermal paste (its only £9 and def worth it with laptops), i'd also look at the silver warranty given courier costs just once is more than £5

If your budget can sretch to it, the Valeon is looking like a promising option and unusually good thermals even though its on the thinner side for a gaming laptop. he Elimina seems to be the thickest case on offer out of the rest but theres been some confusion between the pro and the standard model with CPU choice etc.

Its a little more than your current, but tried sticking to a similar price range (£1200)
The Pro should have better ventilation, and having a M.2 SSD is a bonus both to OS speed but also leaves storage drive spaces empty
Personally, I would be more inclined to save up more and look at a Valeon out of the current range.

If you are going back and forth between laptops and desktops, which is seems you are given theres a few threads, then you need to consider if you need portability. You will get more for your money with desktops and with a desktop theres far more ease to expand and upgrade so youll get more lifespan out of it too.

Your budget (£1200 going on previous) is a limiting factor and prices are high, so I think the "ideal" choice is out of your pricerange right now but the desktop here https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...-good-pc-for-certain-games.80671/#post-595554 is probably the better choice of a not so great bunch.
