Basically after a new graphics card and been looking around...

Few questions....
-Would it be worth waiting till the 8000 series of amd ones? can hold off 2-3 months if worth waiting... Dont mind spending (very max) £250. Obviously rather spend like £180ish.
-Would it be better spending like £80 on a 2nd hand one that can play mid-max settings and then get an 8000 series or nvidia equivilent? is it safe to buy 2nd hand??
-What is the max lifetime of the card suggested?

Requirements:

-Want something that will last me 3 years of playing games on mid-max
-£250 very max and will need to wait a month or so for that.
-AMD/Nvidia - dont really mind, i do for some reason prefer amd though...

-Few cards that come to mind.... 7850 (around £120-160) 7950 (£200-£240) not really looked any further..

PC so far:

3570k i7
asus p8 Z77LX
8gb ram
240ssd

Sorry its a bit of a messy post just trying to get ideas down. I know this has probably been asked loads as well but after searching couldn't really find the answers I was after!

Very grateful if i can get some answers!

Thanks! Kyle

For your budget I would think it will be difficult to get a gpu that will last 3 years. I wouldn't personally buy a 2nd hand card, I find it risky and you are unaware on whether or not the previous owner has overclocked the gpu or other issues.

Thanks for the quick reply. How much would i be looking at paying to get something to last 3yrs? Don't mind playing on mid settings in 2 half years. Hmm...yeh prob leave a 2nd hand one then! Is there any word on 8000 series?

The latest buzz is that the 8000 series won't hit until Q4 this year. From what I can see the 7950 would be a solid card for your budget. If you could stretch to the gtx 670 (>£250) I would be more confident of its longevity, but like keynes says, three years is a long time, it's really hard to say how any card will cope with titles that far down the line.

One thing you can guarantee is that if you wait 3 months for something better you will only hear about something even better being another 3months away.
The rule I always stick to is to buy the best you can afford at the time that you need it and dont look too far ahead.

For graphics scrape together as much as you can and buy whatever that will get, the 7950 is a very good card, the gtx670 is better but probably £50 more expensive.

If I were you id wait until you can afford a gtx 670!

You might have to save a little longer but for the sake of around £50 more on your budget its really worth it for a great graphics card people seem to love.

thanks for all the replies! Looking at the 7950 at the moment, think i will wait till the 700 series is out and then make a decision or at least when a bit more information is released! Probably wait another 2-3 weeks before making a decision! Any other ideas though please just shout :) thanks again, Kyle

i'd suggest waiting till the 700 series atleast.. ya dont want to rush into spending 200-300 quid. Its alot of money to spend, so take your time.

i think the 700 series are gonna be well over 300 quid. Probably about 400 got a 770. But im just guessing.

if it was my money mate, 7970 or the 670.

For me....a 7970 ghz edition card is the best value for money card to go for, so I would stretch your budget a bit if possible. You can get a new one for about £335 off Ebay.

For Graphics cards, you really want to go for the best you can afford....and then some! Otherwise, they will be out of date before you know it (and they will be anyway). I have one of the mentioned cards, and it is fantastic. However, they are always going to be coming out with something better. Word has it that the next batch of Nvidia cards will be higher in price than before and no doubt AMD will follow suite with a price increase. For the money at the moment the 7970 is the best card to get; assuming it is the ghz. edition and you run the latest beta drivers.

Or wait for the new overpriced series of cards to come out, that will no doubt boast better specs, but will be limited by driver support until a few months down the line, both with the green team and the red team. You just have to get something when you can afford it and when you want it, or you will be forever waiting!

If you're going with a 7850 go for the ASUS DC2T. Fantastic card for the price.

Is there any reason you've gone for an SSD? You may be better getting a standard hard drive or something like a Caviar Black which would have more storage and still perform very well. For your budget it would make more sense to focus your money on the GPU than an SSD.

I can vouch for a 670 but it may be worth waiting that little bit longer. The new cards are likely to be more expensive but there may be a slight price decrease on the current generation of cards.

Seems a decent card, possibly be able to push to a 7870 as some sites are around the same price for that card vs a 7870! thanks :)

The SSD I already had and I also have a 320gb 7200rpm HD which does me fine! Really I should have just waited a month and for the new Intel CPUs but ah well...Be making a decision in the next 2 weeks so taking all these options into consideration.

Nice one guys :)

also just seen (hopefully true) can get a 760ti for around £200 which should be similar to a 670!

i'd guess you would be looking about 300-350 mate... no way would nvidia release 760ti's at 200 quid. the 660ti is still about 220upwards. if ya think about it, Nvidia still want sales from the 600 series too, and ofcourse they want to make more money...

ahh right ok...I just seen someones post (american one) and converted the $ to £ and came up around £200 ish. Ah well! Will post again here when pricing comes out for them and ask for the best advice! thanks :)

edit: basically just don't want to buy a card a year old.. i.e. 7850/70 not sure on the Nvidia series.

edit 2: going off this - http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/nvidia_geforce_gtx_780gtx_770_and_gtx_760_ti.html

ah, yeah if it was a straight conversion from dollars to pounds, it would be that price. But we pay a premium over here.

yeah totally get you wanting a 760ti, i'd probably wait mate... see if the extra performance is worth the coin.

i know they're decent cards just don't fancy buying a year+ old card :/. Really want something that will last me till the 8000 series, playing alright on medium and for me to not make a loss (or much of one) by selling the card on!
