My order - On hold awaiting Zen 3 release on 05/11/20

Hello,

My spec is below and I was hoping someone with experience might point out any issues or recommendations.

*Firstly the CPU will be changed to the Ryzen 9 5900x but I can only amend the order from 2pm on 05/11/20 when hopefully it'll be available!
*I have a GPU (GTX 2060) and will upgrade it next year once the Nvidia debacle has calmed down and Big Navi is in the wild.
*I've selected a 750w PSU for the reason above.
*I have 32gb of Corsair Vengeance 3600 RAM already, hence the single 4gb stick selected.
*I have a copy of Windows 10 ready to go.

Is the cooler overkill or too little? (I appreciate it's difficult to be certain until more is known about the CPU)

Thanks

I don´t think there´s any cooler overkill. Better with too much than too little since the consequences of getting too little cooling is system crashes or hardware damage but i´m sure somebody who knows more could give you a better advice. If you trust the advice i would say go for that overkill, what´s the drawback? You consume a little more power, a few more dollars on the electrical bill and if it´s not noisy so why not.
Edit: Ryzen nine processor, if it´s too little. Well, as i said. Let somebody in the know how give you the REAL expert advice then.
I´m just talking...
Edit: And i see now that your RAM memory might not be paired as it should be. Amount wise and even if it´s different in several ways it can cause problems i know about. If you´ll get 36 gigabyte of RAM memory and if they´re not paired with the same kind and right amount. Watch out. If upgrading it go for 64 gigabyte, i believe that´s the right way to upgrade it, choose the same Mhz on it as the sticks you have already also.

Thanks for the replies both. Yes the 4gb RAM stick is there simply because it has to be.

@Nursemorph
Case - The case is one of the narrower ones (as well as cheap) and width is the key issue on my desk. However I'm not averse to a different case. Do you have any recommendations? Edit - I'm not an RGB fan. Would prefer less colour.
HDD/SSD - I have a couple of M2 drives in my existing set up.
Cooler - The cooling you've recommended is quite an upgrade I think. Do you think it's necessary even if I don't plan on *overclocking?
Thermal paste - Thanks I'll drop to the default
WiFi card - I might consider that thanks. However I tend to run via a Cat 5 so not sure it's necessary really?
Warranty - Good shout thanks

Edit2: Didn't mention the mobo. Is the Strix 570 the superior choice in your view? What's better about it?

Thanks again @Nursemorph

The fractal G is too small for the Corsair 115i apparently. Could you recommend another decent case, perhaps the next one up that still has decent cooling? Whilst budget isn’t really a concern I don’t want to spend a fortune on a case, albeit good cooling is a priority.

thanks

Thanks but it’s a bit on the bling side for me, although presumably you can turn the RGB off?

is the Fractal Meshify C a decent case?

Hello again.

So this is the current setup pending the Ryzen 5900x release tomorrow which will be the final change.

Could anyone comment as to whether it looks OK? Thanks

Personally, I'd go with the H115i RGB Platinum rather than the XT as the Platinum is the best one offered....the XT is an update on an older cooler (albeit a 2 year old cooler)

I'd also up the warranty to Silver as it's only £5 and ups the coolect and retrun coverage to a year
Thanks.

I can't see the H115i Platinum on PCS. Would that be a purchase from another retailer?

Also is air cooling with the Noctua NH-U14S a bad idea?

Thanks

Ah, you must have gone through the Workstation configurator...for some reason that one doesn't have the Platinum. Personally, if it was me, I'd phone and ask them if they could add the Platinum cooler (at least one person has done that in the past)...not saying the XT won't do the job, just the Platinum is better.

As to air cooling, it may not be sufficient to keep the chip operating at maximum efficiency. Liquid cooling is always the preferred option...much better at getting rid of the heat

Ah, I can see the platinum now! I can't have scrolled down far enough... I've made the two changes you suggested so thank you.

Now to wait until 2pm tomorrow!

If you are fitting an M2 drive yourself I would forego the SSD drive and opt for a bulk storage or something that you can make better use of. With an M2 fitted as the primary, the 500GB SSD is going to be a bit wasteful. For storage it's too small IMO, it would just be having a drive for the sake of having a drive.

The Hero motherboard is a bit OTT but it's definitely fine for your uses. As nothing else is compromised it's a fair shout. Personally I would be happy with the STRIX, even for the 5950X given my personal uses (and yours). It's only when really kicking lumps out of these chips that a proper high end VRM capacity would be required.

Just FYI, the TD500 is out of stock so I don't think you will be able to order with that.

Hi Scott, thanks for the replies.

I amended the order to the TD 500 over a week ago. I'm pretty sure the stock indicator was orange at that point, which if like other websites presumably meant <10 units left or something. I presume my amended order accounted for this before it went out of stock but I'm not certain. I guess live chat is the best option to find out?

I've actually got an M2 drive (well two) waiting to go in to the new machine. I believe there are two M2 slots on this board. The 500gb SSD was really just a choice I made to give them something relatively quick to stick the OS on. I have my OS on a 120gb SSD atm and I'm always nearly running out of space.

Ta

edit: I'm also pretty sure the website would have warned me when I tried to amend the order if the TD500 was out of stock? It normally wanrs about that sort of thing.

Well the sub order is done and paid for the Ryzen 5900x. I guess it's just a case of waiting now. Will probably use Live Chat to make sure the 'hold' marker has been removed from my order.
