My new Recoil 16

After my ASUS ROG STRIX G713Q gave up the ghost unexpectedly after just 3.5 years (mobo issue for which they asked more than 1300€ to replace) I decided it was a good excuse to get a new laptop instead.

Really wanted 16GB VRAM so I could run larger AI models locally, so the RTX 4090 was the only choice. After a lot of investigation, the Recoil 16 looked like the best choice, with the watercooling being able to really squeeze the performance of the graphic card when at home without making the laptop a monster to take around in general when needing portability. In the past I have had eGPU for this, now I see the watercooler as a kind of eGPU :)

I ordered with just 8GB ram and the cheapest 256gb SSD as I wanted to get those components myself - would have liked if it was possible to order without them at all. But I understand they do hardware and stability testing before sending the laptop and I guess they need these components to do so.

The watercooler was a quite noisy at first, to the point I thought something was wrong with it. But eventually (and after a lot of angling the watercooler in every possible way to make sure all air bubbles were out) it seems to be quiet enough to not bother too much.

All in all very happy with the laptop so far. I love that it has a full keyboard including numpad and full-size enter key, using the whole width of the body, with no wasted space. I really don't get current laptops with keyboards without numpads even on 17'' bodies (new HP Omens, I'm looking at you...)

Coming from 17'' 16:9 I found the 16'' 16:10 to be quite OK, specially with the very thin bezels of the screen. Doesn't feel cramped. And the portability increase is significant. I also like the included IR camera for Windows Hello, was a nice surprise!

I was also pleasantly surprised that my USB-C Thunderbolt hub worked perfectly fine, including 2 external monitors. With the ASUS laptop, sometimes the third monitor was losing signal, or screens were flickering. I thought it was a hub issue. But with this laptop, it has not happened, so I guess it was the laptop!

My only problem was installing Windows (I ordered without OS), the wifi didn't work out of the box during Windows installation (no drivers), so I had to plug it to ethernet to be able to complete the install. If for any reason I didn't have ethernet access, I would have been in a big problem. Also once Windows was installed, a lot of devices drivers were not detected automatically, so had to manually install them after downloading the drivers from PCSpecialist. It was like 15 different drivers so it took quite a bit of time. But once everything is configured, it all works fine.

nice big track pad to go with the big keyboard, how does the recoil 16 feel for flex and overall solidness? what would you scor the screen out of 10? i asked and its a 500 nits.

mine should hopefully be here in a few days :)

There is some flex in the central part of the keyboard but you have to press hard with intention to see it. If you type normally you will never notice.

In general the laptop feels very solid with the full metal body.

I mostly use external monitors so don't use the laptop screen on the daily, but the few times I have used it on the go I was happy with it - including outdoors during the day. But I have not really used the screen to play games or watch movies so can't judge on that.

Congrats on the purchase, I think you will be satisfied. At least I am!

Hey mate, do you mind if I ask how you're getting on with the laptop?

Any hardware/software issues?
How is the general build quality?
Have you found the liquid cooling practical or more on the gimmicky side? (Its quite thick for a notebook, so id have thought it should manage without it. Some notebooks carrying RTX 4090's are in chassis of <2cm depth!)
How have you found the performance?

All the best, and if you see this - thanks in advance!

Sure, I'm pretty happy so far, no issues.

I don't move it a lot and when I do I take good care of it, but build quality seems good, didn't have any damage yet, and screen hinges seem solid.

I also don't use the built in keyboard often as mostly it's connected to an external keyboard, but when I have used it on the go it has been comfortable and good tactile feedback, nothing to complain.

I use the water cooling when gaming or running large AI models at full capacity. Not sure if it improves performance a lot, have not done any benchmarks, but what it does is reduce the fan noise significantly. When the water cooling is working, the fans on the laptop are very low or even idle. Otherwise it can get very loud. There is the noise from the water cooler pump but it's less loud than the laptop fans at full speed.

The procedure for starting the water cooler can be a bit annoying, you have to turn on the water cooler with the button, then enter the control center software, go to certain section inside and connect, and sometimes it doesn't work on the first try (pump flow error) and you have to keep trying until it kicks in.

I found myself doing that so often that in the end I developed an utility just for the water cooler so I could manage it from the system tray instead of having to open the control center all the time https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/made-an-utility-to-control-the-water-cooler.99271/

Performance wise I'm pretty happy, been playing Cyberpunk 2077 at 2k (with DLSS3) and max settings and it's silky smooth, also working with WSL running AI models + IDE + browser with hundreds of tabs open without problems.

Just be aware, the Recoil isn’t a notebook or even a laptop, it’s a DTR (desktop replacement), it’s not designed for portability so battery life will be poor and it will thermal throttle without the watercooler
