MSFS 2024 Spec

Folks could you check that the spec I’ve put together is good for the case and heat management please? If this doesn’t deal with actually running FS2024 then I’ll give up. This is not the GPU that I will have in the build, I need to finalise that, especially with new the new ones due out.

Cant believe its 4 years since I purchased my current machine.

What's wrong with your current build? Shouldn't be any need to replace it, that's the entire point of a custom PC is that you can upgrade it as you go to boost performance when it starts lacking

Well, I’m very limited in my knowledge of these things but my current machine was built for FS2020 and has done a reasonable job, it struggles with everything maxed with complex aircraft (Fenix a320) and add on airports, throw in online vatsim traffic and even with fluid motion it’s dropping to 25ish FPS at times. So to your question, FS24 needs a bit more oooph anyway and when I have looked at upgrading mine via the website it says the Graphics card I want won’t fit in the case and then I get lost past that point, not sure I’m my power supply needs upgrading or motherboard etc.

I’d be really happy to upgrade but limited on knowing where to start.

FS2024 is simply a DLC for 2020, it’s exactly the same game, just needs more GPU power really

So it's no wonder you're struggling to get FPS on the G9 with that GPU, even with a 4090 you'd be struggling on full settings, you absolutely have to optimise settings if you want any kind of decent performance, that goes for any gaming really, but paramount with MSFS. That being said, 30fps on MSFS is considered ok, with 60fps being pretty high end. It's just not a high FPS game.

The 2 limitations on that build are:

Case - Limited to GPU length of 300mm
PSU - Limited for higher end GPU's.

There are 300mm length GPU's out there, I have the same GPU length restriction on my case so have been researching it extensively (I also have a G9 as well), there is currently a very good RTX 4080 model from Asus that is 300mm in length

I'm not suggesting to buy that as the 5080 is being announced tomorrow at CES with release expected on the 21st January and we're expecting around 4090 performance but for £1300 rather than the 4090's £2000, so it's a major upgrade. These new 5000 series will also have the brand new DLSS4 which will be restricted to these new cards.

If you wanted to keep the same case and PSU, I'd get a 300mm length 5080 if there is one and just leave everything else as it is

OR, you could replace the PSU and the Case and then not be bound by any restrictions and get a 5090 (around £2k) and put in a 1200w PSU to cover any bases.

You'll be flying then in more ways than one, and get far more performance than if you were to replace the PC

I’m happy to change the case, PSU and GPU. I‘d budgeted about £3k to ensure I can get maintain the sim running smoothly with all the settings as far up as possible. If it tips over £3k then I’m not stressed so long as I can get the result I’m looking for.

I have a couple of questions if that’s ok?

FS24 recommends 64 gig of ram, can I just have some more put in?
Do I need to add more cooling?
Will an Nvidia GPU slot straight into my motherboard?

For £3k are there better options?

Yes, just get an additional 2 sticks of what you currently have, best to do this through PCS so it properly matches your current RAM. AM4 actually worked better (slightly) with 4 sticks

No, systems fine as it is, but if you wanted more fans it wouldn't hurt anything in a good case.

Will an Nvidia GPU slot straight into my motherboard?

Any gpu is the same connection.

Check your PCS account in the upgrades section if they’ll do a case upgrade, I can’t remember if they will or not.

If they do, that’s easy, you can just order everything through them and return the system for them to do it all, simples.

If not, it’s a little bit of work but certainly doable.

Cases are all subjective depending on the format you want, personally I’m such a huge fan of the Lian Li O11 Dynamic XL, it’s a joy to build in and has lots of room (Although doesn’t include case fans) But you’d want to be at that sort of budget level for something suitable

By upgrading you’ll get to top tier 5090 level and the 5090 is going to blow anything that’s come before out of the water, even the 4090. You wouldnt get near that by replacing the whole pc
