Monitor Upgrade

I decided i'd like to upgrade my monitor to match my new rig. I currently have Samsung Odyssey G3 (old model) and to be honest i've never been a fan of it, it was a gift.

I am looking to get a nice 24" (maybe 27") 1080p monitor. My budget will be up to £200. What i currently have my eye on is:

AOC seem to be well regarded gaming monitors, will this be a good investment or shall i consider something else?

What's the spec of your PC? If it's for your new 1440p build then it's pointless strangling it with a 1080p monitor...unless you're into competitive shooters/gaming?

You can easily get a fast IPS QHD (2560x1440p) monitor for less than £200.

...or for a bit more, one that SpyderTracks raves about:

My spec is detailed in my signature now. I've always played at 1080p, something im comfortable/content with and i want to be able to run 120 fps smooth.

What disadvantages will i have running at 1080p? I need to see whether 1440p is in my price range.

1080p would bottleneck the card, so would be a waste of money.

The 7800XT is a 1440p card, you'd max out a 144Hz monitor in most games without issue.

Might be a silly question but in regards to future proofing, as the games progress/improve, wouldn't playing at higher resolution mean that the performance/settings will need to be adjusted down to keep the fps high, therefore affecting the quality?

My thought process was that having a good system with 1080p will allow to maintain that quality for a long time or is my thinking completely wrong?

No, at that point you’d upgrade the GPU, that’s the entire point of a custom pc is that it’s upgradable. Otherwise you just buy a previous gen off the shelf and save about 50% of the cost.

No, that leads to worse graphical performance while spending far more believe it or not. That’s more consoler way of thinking, it’s not how gaming PCs work

I understand now, thanks for clarification. Now to find the funds for that monitor :D

Right now what would you say the longevity of 7800xt with 1440p monitor would be?

Around 3 - 4 years normally, all depends how willing you are to reduce settings, to what extent.

On any game, the understanding is that you're optimising the game, there's this phallacy in PC gaming (mainly perpetrated by influencers targetting youngsters and those moving from console) that Max / Ultra Graphics is actually a thing on PC gaming. It really isn't, it's purely used as a baseline for benchmarking. On any game you'd apply optimal settings for that game with your particular GPU as there are a host of settings that will hugely tank FPS while doing absolutely zero benefit or a very minor benefit to visual fidelity.

Gotcha, in terms of setting optimisation is it all trial and error or are there better/specific ways of adjusting? With nvidia every time I used optimise option in GeForce my games would run quite bad.

There are guides per game on the web for any game

Never use nvidia optimisation, it’s designed to make you think you need a higher spec GPU, it’s intentionally rubbish and far too aggressive

I completely uninstalled the GeForce Experience app as it was constantly giving me worse performance than my own tweaking.

I tend to go and watch game-specific optimisation videos on Youtube, which will show you what options give you the biggest performance increase with the lowest visible graphic changes...and I routinely switch off RT as I don't think it adds anything (personal opinion of course).

For example...

Reckon they will get some offer stock in the next week or is that it for now?
They appear to have sold out most places online, this is what happens with this model, it just sells incredibly fast

I doubt Curry's will offer the same price, that will be one and done.

I would grab that higher price curry's one personally, then if they do offer it again at a reduce price within the black friday week, they may well match it for you

So regardless the price you reckon this is the best 27" 1400p monitor to go for?

Currys do refunds(price matches) like that?
