Monitor suitable for high end PC gaming?

Hi all! With me waiting to see what happens at CES on the 6th of Jan before buying a high end PC (mainly for gaming and streaming, video editing)

Is the below monitor suitable for my needs as already own it, I will be looking at getting a high end graphics card, either 5090 on release or 4080 minimum

I'm also looking at getting a second monitor for my set up so any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

It's not a gaming monitor by today's standards as it's only 60Hz (never believe marketing nonsense), this means no matter what your GPU can achieve, you can only ever display 60fps, which isn't considered gaming these days, even consoles are putting out 120fps. It's great though as a secondary productivity monitor.

Would you be open to getting a primary gaming display? If so, what kind of budget are you looking at?

Thanks for the reply! Yes that was my concern for it which you have just confirmed. Will definitely look to use it as my secondary tasks monitor.

And most definitely going to need a primary gaming display I have a budget of 700 pounds for a monitor alone (don't mean to seem flash if that's a lot, I've saved for a very long time for a set up)
I've currently been looking at those ultrawide curved ones which I like the look of.

All good, that's a decent budget for an OLED which are the top tier displays currently.

Ultrawide is what I would personally recommend, or Superwide but they are more expensive.

Ultrawide is 3440 x 1440p, so it's essentially 1.33 x 1440p on the horizontal axis and standard 1440p height.

Superwide is 5120 x 1440p, so it's 2 x 1440p on the horizontal and standard 1440p height.

So many benefits to both. You get the extra real estate to the side, this comes in so handy for immersion in a lot of games, especially simulators, but even first person shooters, you'll see enemies coming in from the side earlier.

But it draws you in more, don't know if you've ever experienced VR, but as an owner of a superwide, the extra width gets you closest to a VR experience with either Ultrawide or Superwide, it's a physical experience, it can make you a little giddy at first, you'll find you get far more lost in the game. I could never go back to standard aspect ratio.

The Dell Alienware AW3423DWF is still king of the hill purely from a gaming standpoint.

There's a recent summary of OLED Gaming Monitors here:

I know this is over your budget at £999, but I'm going to link it anyway, this is the Samsung G9 OLED which is a Superwide, this is direct from Samsung, so I'm sure you could find somewhere with a deal on

That's brilliant advice, that's exactly what I've had in mind and you have put my mind at ease! As you said there is a lot of marketing nonsense out there so needed a second opinion. After all there is no point having a high end PC if the monitor is no good!

Thanks for the advice and I'll be sure to check out the links.

Pleasure, always nice when people go for the creme de la creme

I got a Gigabyte M34WQ monitor, 3440 1440p, 34" across the diagonal. It's fantastic, I love it😃
And you can almost fit 2 normal screens across it, just a small overlap, great for moving files from one folder to another.
But from using it, I'd say it's as wide as I would like to go with a flat screen.
I sit roughly a metre away from it. When playing games, the edges disappear and peripheral vision in the game is great. But if it was any wider physically, I think the ends would be out of focus. I'd want a curved screen. If your eyes are constantly refocusing across a flat screen, it's tiring on the eyes. A curved screen removes that 'problem', and the wrap around effect will be even better for 'immersion', in my opinion of course.

I’d completely agree with this

I'll be sure to check that one out also, and that's exactly what I want to achieve, I want the immersion feel so all round good advice, thanks guys

@SimonPeters116 monitir is a huge step down from an OLED, think he’s just highlighting the importance of curved with an ultra wide. For normal aspect ratio it’s not so important, but for ultra wide you really want curved

I know 27" is a bit small for 4K, but there's a new batch of latest-gen 240hz QD-OLEDs coming out from Samsung (and others who use Samsung panels) - but pricing is TBC.

Love mine, great for gaming

I was, go for a curved if you're going w-i-d-e, ie 34" or wider.

I love my monitor, it's imho fantastic, an enormous step up from my previous monitor.
But, my budget was limited. I think you can now get much better for not much more money.
And OLED has become much more affordable in the intervening years.

There's an MSI 3440 1440p 34" OLED, curved gaming monitor for under £800, in the UK.
Taking inflation into account, that isn't much more than mine was.

Hi guys! With some careful consideration thanks to your input I've decided I'm gonna go with in coming month.

Excited for CES tomorrow/Tuesday morning and the coming weeks to see the outcome and how that will affect my configuration, thanks all

That monitor really has led the way from the very start of the OLED crown entries, very good choice. Think you'll be blown away when you see OLED, HDR AND Ultrawide up close and personal
