Maximum Required Power?

Hey all.

I've just amended my order a little, and I notice that first they recommend I only need a 350W Power Supply, but when I scroll down to the pricing information it says the Maximum Required Power is 776W. I always prefer to be over with my PSU anyway, so I've currently got a 750W in it. But er....which bit information here is more relevant? The amount they calculate the system will use or the maximum required number?

The system looks like this now, after amending. Thanks in advance for any help!

Where does it say you only need a 350W PSU? Or that it needs 776W? Can you post a screenshot?

I put the spec into the configurator and when clicking proceed it says:

Also what is this spec for? gaming? non-gaming uses? specific software? if gaming, what resolution and refresh rate is the monitor?

Oh, right, with the RX 5600 XT it says:

PCS's PSU requirements for the configurators seem all over the place these days tbh - an RX 5700 doesn't use 220W more than an RX 5600 XT :/

Tell us:

"Also what is this spec for? gaming? non-gaming uses? specific software? if gaming, what resolution and refresh rate is the monitor? " and we can recommend something sensible PSU wise and other tweaks

It's here towards the bottom of list of when I click on "Show" under "My orders".

Gaming and study, no specific software such as video or art processing. 1080 monitor, AOC24G2U or 27G2U (which is why I downgraded to the 5600XT after reading a bit about it, as it wasn't an option at the time I first ordered being newly out and it sounds like it runs much cooler than the 5700).

From what I know (not much on modern systems frankly) I figure the 750W should be sufficient for that system? But I can upgrade to a 850W if needed.

Thanks!

776W is a ridiculous number for the spec(s) you've quoted. There's just no way it would be anywhere near that.

The RX 5700 doesn't run way hotter than the RX 5600 XT - they're the same GPU with the 5700 just being clocked higher. The RX 5700 and 5700 XT launched initially with single fan blower coolers which are not very effective coolers. But are now available with dual and tri fan coolers and are fine for cooling.

The RX 5700 is barely any more expensive than the 5600 XT (not to mention the free game) and is a better buy than the 5600 XT.

As above, 32gb RAM is a waste for gaming. There's just no point to it. 16gb is more than futureproof.

The X570 motherboard and Firecuda SSD are, well, kind of nice, but not really worth the £130 premium over a B450 motherboard and any cheap M.2 drive. Gaming performance will see 0 difference.

The R5 3600x is only worth buying over the R5 3600 if you want the bundled game. The performance difference between them is so small that it might as well not exist.

As for the extra case fans, if you're buying a cheap case and adding extra fans to try to improve the cooling it usually makes more sense to just buy a better case to begin with. And/or you could buy an AIO cooler which will cool the CPU better and also effectively adds fans to the case.

Thanks for the input both!

I'll rethink and get the order finalized for Monday, I only started to fiddle around with it to upgrade to a Fast Track in the first place.

I assume if I went with a 5700 or 5700XT I would get one of the newer kinds with the multiple fans? I don't know which brands PC Specialist usually uses. It's doable to cut the RAM back and go back to them.

Also reading about BIOS upgrades to the 5600XT, no idea if that's something PC Specialist would fix for me before shipping or not.

Any thoughts on the case in general? Is it suitable?

As them what model of graphics card they are currently using :) Not just the brand, because brands sell various models.

Something else to ask them. Not all cards have the updated BIOS, I think some AIB partners just released a different card version e.g. MSI Gaming X and then Gaming Z with the new BIOS.

In view of the small price difference though just go with the 5700. You could even buy the PC without a GPU and fit your own, if there was a particular model you liked the look of / could save money with, etc.

The case is fine, especially for a mid-range system

Thanks again, I'll be sticking to 16GB RAM then, investing in a good CPU cooler and I'll debate on the graphics card, the performance difference on the 5600XT and 5700 at 1080p is negligible, but as you say so is the price. I suspect the CPU would bottleneck a 5700XT and it would be overkill for a 1080p monitor too.

Thanks Morriserick. Can google see that Powercolor make several sorts including non blower/open models, so Monday morning I have to send them a chat and ask specifically what they are using just now in the higher AMD range.

Ok, well for anyone curious they are using the original blower form models for the 5700 and 5700XT from Powercolor. I've decided to go with a 5600XT because of that, I think.....

....maybe. But probably, even if it might mean I get a slightly worse version of the 5600.

Or I could get a 5700 and underclock/undervolt it. Meh...

/sigh.

I'll take the 5700. The 5600XT they are using is probably the kind that won't upgrade with the VBIOS upgrade. I'll live with the blower fan and underclock the card if I don't like the temps. Just a rather poor selection on the AMD cards they using sadly.

Done, decision made. M u s t s t o p a m e n d i n g o r d e r n o w.
