M.2 SSD recommendation.

Hi, I would like to upgrade my old PCS laptop by installing a M.2 SSD in its available slot.

Can someone recommend the best value/performance 128 or 256 gig drive that I could purchase from this site? I plan on installing the OS on this drive.

Also, will it be straight forward for me to install the SSD myself? And, will I be able to switch my windows 10 OS from the old sata drive onto the new SSD drive?

thanks

It’s much better to get a 256gb as minimum as the 128gb drives don’t achieve the better speeds.

I would suggest the Samsung 970 evo, personally my favourite for speed vs performance.

What laptop do you have? Need to be sure it can take an NVMe or just a SATA m2.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I have a 15.6 Ultranote from 2013. I'm not sure if it can take an NVMe or just a SATA m2.

How can I find that out?

On the underside it should have the Clevo model number, if you post that we can find a manual to be sure.

So you can only have an old mSATA drive which is just normal SATA speeds ie max 600mbs, but it's a defunct media, personally I'd just get a 2.5 SATA drive and fit that, they're cheap as chips now, can pick up a 1Tb for not much over £100

If you want to keep your existing storage, and you already have 2 2.5" Sata drives, or 1 2.5" Sata drive and a DVD drive in the other bay, then you can find modern SSDs in mSata form.

The 860 Evo for instance comes in mSata. It's expensive though, in either 2.5" or mSata, versus other 2.5" drives, even ones that are near enough as fast like the MX500.

Depends what storage you have in the laptop exactly. If you only have a 240gb Sata SSD in there, replacing it with a 1TB MX500 could be little more expensive than a 500gb 860 Evo for example. Subject to variations in pricing.

I see. Thanks for your help and tips.

Plenty of food for thought there. Thanks for your suggestions.
