Laptop temperatures

Hi everyone, with the heatwave we are facing these days I feel my poor laptop is under pressure! Now I am pretty much in idle with temperatures at around 60 degrees with short peaks at around 90 degrees while I am playing Crisis Warhead or Rome II. Which I know I am still in the limits, but even though Crisis is demanding I do not need 6 cores at full speed.

Via Intel Extreme Tuning Utility I have a core voltage offset of -0.100V. Has anyone experience with this program? In the past I always used the bios to change voltage/clock, but now I got a laptop.

My idea would be to lower the clock via ratio multiplayer and lower a bit more the voltage little by little doing some trials.

Suggestions on how you would proceed?

By the way, I am very happy with my laptop, just trying to treat it nicely.

Many thanks in advance.

Nothing, I am keeping it at -0.100V.
I have gone lower than that, tested and passed without problems. However when I reboot the Intel program says something like it could not apply the core voltage offset -which to me it is the program being over conservative, as when tested with the cpu running at 100% it has no issues. At -0.100V instead it always apply it automatically when I rebbot. I am keeping that.
One thing I noticed as soon as I start testing the cpu it goes immediately into thermal throttling and reduces the clock anyway.
I think in order to have more fun I would have to do it though bios with a proper desktop pc.
Lowering a bit the voltage and clocks I see already -10 to -15 °C of average gain, so I am happy anyway.

I'm assuming you already have it on a cooling stand?
What paste did you take with it?

Thanks for your reply.
You assume wrongly! :ROFLMAO: I have it on my table. The laptop is over a year old (configuration in my signature).

I paid a little more to have a better thermal paste applied.

Sometimes laptops can benefit greatly from a cooling stand or even just a raised stand as it increases airflow under the case. Well worth looking into.

The Thermaltake laptop coolers are very good.

Thanks a lot for your input. I will start by raising it a bit (with 4 little feet) and see if I see any changes in temperatures. Do you already have a Thermaltake laptop cooler model you would recommend?

I have forgotten an important detail. The laptop is actually working with the lid closed as it is normally connected though an HDMI cable to a monitor 😬

Lucky you asked, I actually meant Cooler Master....

This is the X150R, it's very new and has fantastic reviews. The older Notepal X3 was the go to for a long time and this has replaced it:

Thanks a lot Sibun1 and Spydertracks! If the cpu cooler gives me another 5° of gain it means I am already 15 to 20 degrees lower than what I would be in a standard configuration.

I just tried playing Rome II and I confirm I am already peaking up only at 75° maximum on the hottest core, with 70° on the colder one. I used two John Lewis Home catalogs at the moment! I was peaking up at 90° - 91° degrees before on the hottest core.

Tomorrow I will also have a look if I can get something with MSI afterburner on the gpu side as well. Not sure if undervolting it a little bit step by step will make any difference in the overall temperatures, as I think the cpu is the untamed beast!

Anyway in general I am very happy with the laptop. It`s just that I wanna treat it nicely, especially if I play for couple of hours during a heatwave!

Thanks a lot for the support.
