Laptop replacement advice

Hi there,

My current (PCS) laptop is about 6 years old now and as the wife is hoping for a couple of expensive Christmas presents this is probably a good time to get mine upgraded as well without too much earache...

In terms of general requirements...

I'm happy with a 15 inch screen but could get a 17 inch if there was a compelling reason to do so.

Games wise I mostly play the likes of Warhammer 3 and (when it is finally fully released) Baldur's Gate 3.

Budget wise I would ideally like it to be around £1,500 but having configured a couple I think I could end up stretching to £1,700 or so.

Having looked around the 3700 is likely to be the GPU that I can afford but I have no idea how much I should put into a processor, or which would be best for my needs.

Also with the 3700 it seems a bit of a shame to "only" get a FHD monitor. I assume that with the 3700 I should be able to make use of a higher resolution QHD?

I also don't care about the thickness of the laptop so if a bulkier chassis improves thermals a bit then I am more than happy.

I priced these:

I'm leaning towards the Recoil due to the QHD screen but is there anything that I am missing/misunderstanding/could do better?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi !

So, first of all, those 3 laptops look good, but the recoil is, for me, really overkill (I assume it's the 15")
And, to be honest, I don't really like this recoil because the chassis is made by tongfang, and from the message on the forum, it can have some minor (to, saddly, sometime, major) problems, so, i tend to propose the laptop based on clevo chassis.
The two destian are clevo based laptop, and my sisters have the amd version, and they work pretty well ^^

To help you in your choice, will you play with an external monitor ? If yes, the resolution from the laptop is not really relevant

This being said, there is some of my thoughts :
- Do you really need 32 go of ram ?
- You should have a first really fast and good but smaller ssd (like the 980 pro) for your OS, game, and software and a bigger one for your data
- You should take the better thermal paste
- You should take the golden warranty and the 1 year dead pixel guarantee

I'd go for the AMD version of the destian (with my suggestions), if you have to pick one from your list

So, in addition of the 2 destian that are good, i propose you those two other choices :

The 16" elimina pro, that match pretty much all your request (except for the 3070, but the 3060 will do fine with the games you mentionned)
I kept the 32go of ram, like your previous spec.

Hi there.

No I don't particularly need 32GB. I have no idea what I need but the recomended for modern games that I might want to play seems to be 16GB and so 32GB seemed like basic future proofing. Maybe it isn;t required.

I don;t use an external monitor and so the screen is going to be important. Is the beneift from the QHD screen significant?

I'll take a look at the two specs that you have suggested but sadly £2,250 will be a bit of stretch too far...

Animal_79

Also, what is the reason for getting two hard drives?

I get that you want the os on as fast a drive as possible but windows won't take up anywhere near 500GB and it seems like a bit of a wast to get 500GB at 6900MB/R and a separate 1TB at 3500MR/R when I could just get 1TB at 7000MB/R, save a little bit and keep the second slot free for expansion if needed later on.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that you are recommending for a good reason I just don't follow what the reason is and like to understand.

My current machine has 500MB total and although I can''t have every game installed at all times I don't really have any issues and would have thought that 1TB would be enough for me.

Is it just because the OS is being constantly accessed and so you avoid "traffic jams" by having it on a separate channel?

Hellow, sorry for the delay

So, i'll try to answer you point by point :
(don't worry about the question, i was in your shoes last year ^^)

-For the RAM, it's not really useful to have more than 16 except if you'll need it for something specific (it will not do anything bad if you have more than enough thought ^^) - You have to take a 2x8 package of ram, it's better than a 1x16 thought
-For the screen, honestly, it depend on what you do with it, for the games you mentioned, I don't think there will be a major difference (but it may be a "nice to have" if you can afford it)
-For the 2 separates hard drives (I'm sorry, i forgot to explain), as the forum members here recommend to do a clean instal of the OS from time to time, it allow you to not copy everything each time. And it may be safer and easier to manage your personnal data ^^. So, the first one is for the OS, your "most played" game and the software you usually use, the second one is more for storage and other things you may need from time to time ^^
Your solution is not a bad one, but, as i learned "everything" from here, i tend to give the same advice that was given to me. So, to conclude for this part, it's up to you ^^
(For more technical answer, maybe an other member may answer better than me @SpyderTracks could you come to the rescue ?)

To conclude, with what you said, I think the Elimina pro is, for me, the laptop that may fit the best your needs (but, finally, it's up to you to make the choice ^^)

(Sorry if i could not answer everything, but as i'm not a native english speaker, sometime, i have to compromise with what i have in mind and with what i can say ^^")

Hi,

I've posted a couple of times over the last couple of months whilst trying to talk myself into parting with cash to upgrade from my last PCS machine bought in 2016.

This time I really am about to push the button.

I have talked myself into upping the budget to £2k and even then both of these creep a little over...

Games wise I mainly play the likes of Warhammer 3 and B Gate 3 but also have Cyberpunk to get cracking on. I obviously would like everything to look as nice as possible but want something that will last me 6-7 years again.

I'm conscious that with the QHD screen and both at 240Hz that the Graphics card needs be be at least a 3070 but am I best off going all out on the card at the expense of the CPU or sticking with the 3070ti in order to get the i9? My technical understanding isn't great (i.e. no existent).

Other considerations are:

1) I am nervous that the Ionico being so slim will lead to issues with the thermals, or at least mean that the fans are going hell for leather all of the time.

2) I read some reviews of the Recoil which raised issues with the keys and leading to basic typing becoming an issue. Is this the same chassis or has that issue now been resolved?

Any help much appreciated.

Hello,
Nice to see you back with a bigger budget :D

To answer to your second question :
As i said in my second post here, i prefere clevo chassis but the ionico and the recoil are tongfang chassis ...
So, I'll propose you firstly what i'd chose within clevo chassis and, if you don't like what i propose, i'll find my way aroud one of your 2 choices ^^
To answer to your first question :
And you are right about the fact that a slimer chassis cause hotter temperature (i'm pretty sure that now, they propose the liquid cooling solution because of this problem)

To answer to your third question :
It depend, the 3070ti is really close of the 3080 (less vram, 8 instead of 16, and a little less powerful), but, in your case, you really need to have some guarantee and warranty that you didn't take into account with your ionico spec...

As the amd destian disappear we'll have to chose something else : the intel destian and the 15'6 defiances models

Firstly, I propose you the intel destian, that have everything you want, powerful Desktop CPU and GPU, but a classical 15" FHD screen (1920x1080) (and two 1To ssd, because it was in your budget :D)
Including the golden warranty, the 1 year dead pixel guaratee and a better thermal past
This one let you have a 2.5 ssd slot available

I like the look of the Defiance as I'm really keen on the QHD...

Is the difference between a 165Hz screen and the 240Hz that I would get with the Recoil/Ionico likely to be something that I will ever notice?

My current screen is 60Hz so I would have thought either is a vast improvement and I'm unlikely to be able to tell.

I assume that it also means that the GPU isn't worked quite as hard?

If I am only using the machine for light office applications and gaming should I be bothered about the i7 vs i9?

Many thanks again

Is the difference between a 165Hz screen and the 240Hz that I would get with the Recoil/Ionico likely to be something that I will ever notice?
99% of people will never notice anything above about 120Hz. 1440p 144Hz is a far better gaming experience over 1080p 240Hz for the majority of gamers

Not necessarily, just means the GPU output will be capped to that of the screen, but in most titles at 1440p, you'd never go above 165Hz anyway with an RTX3080ti

I would suggest stick with the i7, due to thermal limits the i9 won't actually give much more performance anyway outside of heavy multithreaded workloads like rendering.

Wonderful. Thank you.

And forgive me for what I know is a stupid question but…

Hz is the refresh rate and so to make full use you would need to be running a game at at least the same fps?

So a game running at 120 fps on a 244Hz screen is essentially identical to a game running at 160 fps on a 120Hz screen?

1 fps = 1Hz

A game running at 120hz on a 160hz screen is exactly the same as a game running at 120hz on a 240hz screen, assuming same resolution.

But this 1440p Vs 1080p. So imho, 120hz 1440p is far better than 120hz 1080p. As is 120hz 1440p far better than 240hz 1080p.

Out of interest, do you (spider trax and Martin) share Tron1982’s views on the tonyfang vs Clevo chassis?

For £100 more than the defiance I could upgrade the 3070ti to a 3080 in an ionico if I also get a slightly smaller ssd (I have another to put in and this is one of the few things that I could upgrade later)

The cosmos in my sig is a Clevo machine, one of the main advantages of Clevo over Tonfang, is the have a customer portal for drivers for all their machines, whereas Tonfang only deal with the system builders

Personally I feel TongFangs got in higher specs while sacrificing build quality and longevity. They have a lot of bugs both hardware and software

I would always choose Clevo personally.
