Laptop for contract work

I'm an accountant and I work with MASSIVE Excel files - my home computer is an i9 with just about everything I can throw at it in terms of memory etc, and I still experience lags, even though I normally use manual recalculation.

I need a smaller lighter laptop that I can take with me to clients - I'm looking at this sort of spec, but I need to know 1) do I need a second SSD drive?; 2) how much is it going to weigh in total (I am a small woman and anything over about 4Kg is really going to be a problem with all the other stuff I need to lug about)?; 3) any other suggestions?

I have a Microsoft Office Pro licence, I'm not a gamer, and I loathe Norton!

Hi there, can you provide the configurable link from the bottom of the quote?

I would definitely recommend spending more on storage and getting something reputable/more reliable. Having 2 drives is massively beneficial so we would always suggest doing so.

Do you need the pro version of Windows? Are you using bitlocker?

I have the pro version of windows because I'm using it for work. I don't think I'm using bitlocker, how would I find out?

What features do you need from Pro though? It's not like old versions where it added loads of extra stuff, all it does is allow you to join a domain or enable bitlocker really. It's only required for use on corporate domains.

Okay, so you're saying that I can use a Home version of Windows? I will probably need to use it as a workstation attached in some way - remotely or via Ethernet - to a client's server.

What do you mean by reputable / more reliable? Are you suggesting a ready made laptop? I don't find them well enough specced in terms of RAM and processing to suit what I need to do (hundreds of thousands of calculations all feeding into one another).

Think @Scott was referring to the SSD. The PCS drives are budget drives, they're not designed for high IOPS. A P44 Pro or Core XT MP600 would be far more suitable.

You need perhaps a 1Tb as the OS / Program drive and then a secondary data drive, I'd suggest 2Tb for comfort.

I will probably need to use it as a workstation attached in some way - remotely or via Ethernet - to a client's server.
When you say attached to a clients server, do you just mean software connected via a port, or RDP session to the server or something else?

Could be any of those. At my last job I could either take my laptop into the office and connect to an Ethernet network or work from home over a VPN mirroring one of the desktops. Depends on the client and their IT set up but I'd like to be as versatile as possible.

Pro windows allows Bitlocker, if you don't need that it's a bit of a waste. The networking features that pro allows are host features, so you would need to be dialing into the laptop for it to make sense. Dialing into other hosts with your laptop as the client is allowed with Home. The features are very similar, pro does offer some benefits but if you don't know what they are it's unlikely you would ever need/use them.

With that being said, it's only £23 saving so I wouldn't want you taking that risk for the sake of that, just in case.

Something like the below. I need to point out that this is previous generation with DDR4 RAM. It's great value but the reason is that it's older technology.
