Looking for a powerful new laptop for AAA gaming since I don't have the space in my new accommodation for a desktop, what would you build if you had the choice.

FYI, Octane series is true desktop replacement laptop. It actually has desktop components inside it. Weighs 4+ kg too. Everything else uses mobile versions of CPU and GPU. They're designed for portability after all

Drumk's choice is pretty good if you're going to keep it in your accommodation and barely move it around but if you want something that can still function like a laptop, I'd go with this one below:

I don't think there is any benefit of having 2 x m2 ssd on a gaming laptop. The sensible option is to go with a 500gb-1tb m2 ssd for windows and games then add a 7200rpm hdd for all the other files which will not benefit from being stored on a faster drive. The intel ssd is also a bit slower than wd black or samsung. If the larger battery pack is something of interest for the OP, there is the option of going for 1tb m2 ssd and drop the hdd. I am not sure the price increase between 1tb to 2tb on the m2 drive is justifiable for the usage described by the OP. It would be money spent for no increase in performance.
The below build will perform the same and is about £250 cheaper. This can be amended to include a hdd if the larger battery pack is of no interest. The warranty can also be adjusted but I kept it as gold for a better comparison. I would suggest getting at least the silver warranty as it's only £5.00 more than standard.

I'd agree with Flo on the storage.

A 2TB SSD just doesn't seem worth it for this kind of spec/ usage. Save the money towards the next laptop in the future, or whatever else one spends that kind of cash on.

Note that if 15.6" would be fine, the Vortex is in a similar price bracket to the Recoil, but offers Gsync.
