99 is nearer where it should be throttling as per intel; or a little before that; as that is near the thermal limit of 100 where it should shut down. . However, Clevo could have done something different with their bios to help the cpu live longer and unfortunately have an adverse effect on certain cpu intensive games; first time they have done this if so however.
As for the fans..they are quite odd on Clevos; they tend to be fairly quiet until its really hot and then kick in hard. They could definitely use the ability to set a more streamlined custom cpu/gpu fan profile but have never added something as advanced as that instead of presets but never seen one throttling like that before. What are your power settings set to on the laptop in windows? Also to test out whether it is a fan issue, you can normally turn on full fans on clevos with fn + 1 on the keyboard. They do kind of pulse. Try playing with that and see if it still does it.
To be honest I wouldn't expect that to make a difference as it was throttling at too low a temperature in the first place, or at least that is what the monitoring tool suggests. Maybe new ec firmware/bios would help if there is one.

Laptop power settings are high perfomance, FN + 1 doesn't do anything other than turn touchpad on/off on a defiance / p670sg. I can't find any official new EC or bios. When running the fan on max speed it throttles at 79c aswell

Thanks

That seems a bit odd! You might need someone to weigh in with a Defiance to compare with.
What happens if you run the fans at max (Fn & 1), then start gaming? Does it keep cool enough to stop throttling?
Personally I dont use automatic or custom fan profile, just the xtu profile.

Thats kinda why i made this thread, to get comparisons from other defiance users. Notebook review don't seem to be having this issue with the sager np8672 (clevo p670sg).
Fn + 1 doesn't max speed on this system it toggles touchpad.
Max speed seems to throttle at 79c still.
I don't have a XTU profile option.

I just read the following from notebook review.

The games in which I'm having the fps drop is TF2, L4D2 etc.

I just tried Company of Heroes, same random fps drop.

The interesting thing is that if you play on battery, the framerate is capped at 60fps but there's no random drops.

I guess I'll try BIOS update next...

Well I just updated stock BIOS / EC and that fixed it, not a single fps drop now, CPU speeds are still fine too, it turbos / speedsteps up to 3.5GHz still.

Use the correct stock BIOS file from Premamods website (eg P6xxSG for 670SG) and follow his included instructions and all should go fine.
In the middle of the upgrade it might say something about a filename being different and wether or not you want to continue, just say yes.

but is there a official pc specialist bios update rather than the premamod stock (which is most likely clevo branded)

I'd definitely be in touch with PCS not only to ascertain if this is normal for your laptop (which I really doubt) but also what they offer as a solution. It could just be a repaste job. I wouldn't do anything with the bios just yet, and if it came to that I'd want clarification from PCS on what it would do to your warranty if it went belly up. Perhaps ask them to flash the bios for you? Bios flashing should be straight forward, and fortunately in the past I haven't bricked anything through flashing (bios/vbios) but there is always risk, and potentially serious, so best to clear things up with PCS.
I know in my customer account section here in the customer downloads there is a zipped up bios file for my laptop, but the zip is locked with a password, and it states only to flash once guided by PCS.

Hi thanks for the feedback, yeah i plan on doing this on my lunch break today, i work as a IT Technician so i'm confident with flashing bios'es etc but need to be sure i am "allowed" to. I have a passworded zip file for bios aswell so it may be a case of doing that.

Thanks for your help. i will update the thread with pcs's response

Contacted PCS they wanted me to send it back to them which could take up to 2 weeks, so i stated i work in IT my self and that i was confident flashing bios's etc so will try the updated bios then see what happens.

turns out that bios file is password protected but the password is in the terms and conditions, 7zip didn't want to open any file in that zip but windows zip manager opened the readme fine :)

another post on notebook review states stuttering issues then the updated EC fixed it
Hi,

I have a Clevo p670sg.

I just flashed to EC 1.03.04. It solved the stuttering issue I had with EC 1.03.03

However, I notice the CPU is running at 2.88 ghz instead of 3.4 when turbo boosted.

Is there a way to get it to run atleast 3.0 ghz and above ?

and another

Hi guys, first time posting here :) I just bought a Clevo P670SG with m.2 sata 256gb ssd, 16gb of ram, i7 4720hq @2.60 ghz and gtx 980m with 4gb

The system runs fine but I see constant stuttering during games, be them intensive or not. Shadow of Mordor, Witcher 2, Heroes of the Storm and League of Legends all suffer from some form of 1-2 sec fps drop at random times, I have Windows 8.1 x64, latest nvidia drivers and everything pretty much from stock. Bios version is 1.03.03 and the power supply is 180w.

Any clues to what is causing the stuttering?

Update to latest EC+BIOS+Hotkey software.. Should fix your problems..

and another one

Did both and it seems to have fixed the FPS issue! Thanks guys.

Are those updated EC, BIOS, Clevo software or modified?
If they are official Clevo then surely PCS wouldn't have a problem updating to those?

Fn + f1 should toggle the touchpad
Fn + 1 (numerical 1) should toggle max fans.

That is unless they have changed something recently that has been the same in every other Clevo. Sounds like that bios update might do the trick; good luck mate!

Yeah i completely misread that each time it was suggested. (stupid moment) thanks.

Nice one, excellent news. No throttling :) So just updating the bios and EC fixed your problems? Were they Clevo or modded?

That's a relief, any idea what has changed to make the cpu more stable.

nope i guess it was some sort of bug in the EC i think the fans spin differently on auto now, they ramp up more gently and at lower temps. but even when it reaches 79c it doesn't seem to throttle now.

yup :) just undervolting the cpu slightly now to get optimum performance and temps :)

Does any one have any luck getting OSX (Hackintosh) working on this laptop? I believe OSX on non apple hardware is legal and allowed as the kernel is opensource. obviously legal key purchase of osx required!

I seen someone got Yosemite working on the 650SG was wondering if any one else had any luck?

Should i make a new thread?

EDIT: www.tonymacx86.com/yosemite-laptop-...osemite-clevo-p650se-sager-np8651-clover.html :) its a 970m version and 15.6inch version not 17 inch but the size i doubt will matter and the nvidia gpu is disabled in osx anyway which is fine as this means i can use osx on battery more efficiently

follow the steps on the pcspecialist site.

Go to your downloads then download the bios, read the readme.txt , find the password, write the img to a 8gb usb and then follow the instructions.txt, this will flash bios and EC
