is this over the top for a casual gamer?

Hi all, looking for some feedback on the below build idea. I play online in the evenings, mostly Apex, Enlisted, that sort of thing. I want to put my existing graphics card in to save some money but would love some expert advice as to if I'm wasting money on unnecessary parts?

Thanks for any advice!

There's a whole bunch that could be changed, mostly making it cheaper! Will you be doing anything other than gaming?

Could you post the configurator link to make it easier to change?

Yeah, as @Steveyg says, you can spend much less and get a system that will actually be better in games. If you have an old graphics card already, I presume you have a computer that you're retiring. If so, you could transfer Windows off it and save £105.

I actually think even @Steveyg's build is quite a luxury one: I'd personally think you would be OK with a 5600X CPU and B550 motherboard, a lesser cooler and perhaps a cheaper case. If you do already have a copy of Windows, this could bring the cost down to £1050ish. I know you have the budget, but there's nothing to be gained by spending for no performance benefit!

Absolutely, I went with the idea that you didn't need a GPU right now and had a budget of around £1,800 and thought I could definitely build something fantastic and still make considerable savings

You could definitely build something around the £1000-£1200 mark that would also be super solid, I just swung for the fences

The below is with a graphics card, just a step up in generation

If you just want to use your own card then the below system would cost approx £1168 inc VAT.

Only things I would change is the motherboard and case, I would go for the TUF B550 with this board and I would go for the 4000D case

I'm not personally convinced a 1060 to 2060 upgrade is a sensible one. It's not a huge upgrade: I'd stick with the 1060 until such time as I could do a bigger upgrade. (Indeed, @large7500, a budget of £2000 is about what you need to do a full upgrade to 1440p, including new monitor and graphics card...)

My mistake on the motherboard thought I had selected the TUF one. The case I just left as what you had put in the build, don't know enough about cases to reject/recommend one over the other ;)

And I agree hence why I mentioned the price without the card as well. However not knowing how old the OP's card is, just thought it was worth giving the option, although I'd prefer to save the additional £400 and stick with the older card as you suggested.

5000D is larger and has more room than the 4000D, it just lets you mount larger radiators. I usually select that case (5000D) with the 5800X because the 5800X runs so hot, the extra room and ability to go for the higher end coolers really helps

The 5600X doesn't run anywhere near as hot so you don't need the larger radiators or coolers. The smaller case just gives you more places you can put it

I'd agree with this, I would be looking to upgrade to a 3070 or a 3060Ti in future. Or I'd wait until the next gen in Nvidia GPU's

Thanks guys, one last question please. I was under the impression its best to have a small SSD to install the OS on?
Does it make a massive difference having my games on an SSD instead of an HDD?

There is a small 500GB Samsung 980 Pro that's lightening quick for your OS and maybe a few key programs

There is also a 1TB M2 SSD included for games that have long loading times or could benefit from fast write speed. Depending on the game an SSD can make a massive difference to performance

Then I included a 2TB HDD for general storage of files, videos, pictures or games where load times aren't a problem

I'm going with the idea (as mentioned above) of a smaller but fast, say 250-500Gb, m.2 for the OS and apps and a bigger, maybe not as fast one for game installs (especially compared to HDD's aso as game loads these days are getting crazy long)
And then after that, yeah, SATA SSD/HDD etc for older/lesser games/data aso if needed.
It's what I did 5 years ago, works well, and am doing again.

Also, for gaming alone plus casual everyday uses, the 5600X has serious chops (but I don't know if it's comparably priced to the other CPU's mentioned) Obviously, if OP ever intends to do anything more serious and heavy than gaming, a 5800X etc might be better but at this point there's no great reason to go Intel tbh.

Other than that, 1060 to 2060 isn't the best upgrade given the performance of newer GPU's... or wouldn't be under normal circumstances, those new cards are hard to get and overpriced... so any upgrade, if close to MSRP might be good for now until that craziness gets better. The 4000D Airflow case is great for most uses tbh, with the 5000D only better for extreme, 7+ fan cooling and the bigger coolers/GPU's aso.
