Is this good enough for gaming?

It didn't let me paste the deets lol. Does anybody who knows what they're talking about think this would hold up for gaming for now!?

For minesweeper & solitaire it should fare quite well. Older games such as the original Starcraft would also be fine.

If you want to play anything even remotely 2020 relevant you're going to want a gaming chip on board.

Your RAM selection is also not ideal with the above system. You want 2x8GB and you want to select the fastest option (2666 I believe).

The integrated graphics are extremely weak.

What games are you intending to play? That would help be more specific.

Also note this - you can't upgrade the GPU in a laptop. For gaming, the GPU is what determines performance and so is what will determine when your laptop is too weak to play a given title. The only way to uograde is to buy a whole new laptop.

The best plan is therefore to buy a laptop with the best GPU you can reasonably afford, so that this will put off buying a new one as far into the future as possible.

The Optimus with its GTX 1650 is the minimum I'd recommend for any generic gaming laptop.

Haha, i intend on playing modern titles, mainly indie games but also AAA ( Rocket league, Gta, The witcher, 7dtd). I have a slight case of the dumb as far as pc internals go.

You'd think with a price tag of £700+ it would run games better than a ps4 but idk.

I'll look into the optimus and better ram options instead. Thank you guys :)

Witcher 3 on integrated graphics would run significantly worse than PS4. You'd be lucky to hit 10fps on 720p resolution, looking at some videos. And Witcher 3 is 5 years old now, let's not forget.

It's not just a question of money, but of where in the spec you spend it. Buying an i7, 16gb RAM, and an SSD does nothing for gaming performance (or even just being able to run them fullstop) compared to a decent graphics card.

You won't be able to afford an Optimus with a GTX 1650 GPU for less than about £900.

You'd need to up the budget, or try to find an off-the-shelf laptop on another site with a GTX 1650 and -H series processor within your budget range. Obviously since the forums belong to PCS, we can't advise on specifics, but what we can advise is that a Cosmos is not what you're after(!).

The PS4 is a pain to play on your lap while on a train though! Seriously, the PS4 is designed for gaming and made by the million - a laptop is portable, able to do some stuff a PS4 can't and in the case of PCS, built to order. At very low budgets the PS4 is often the better bet. Given you want to meet or beat PS4 performance, have it smaller, lighter, portable and include a screen...

Yikes, I'm glad I asked. Thank you for your professional guidance.

The Optimus on pcs is certainly in my sights in the near future, thank you very much.

You're right, more is definitely squished into a sleek portable package with the laptop and their price is justified, it's just a shame pc gaming is so expensive.

I am on a very tight budget  and it's not entirely about performance for me, it's that I'm let down by Sony, they can pump out the AAA exclusives but not the fun hit indie games I'm actually interested in. The sheer amount of game choice you have on pc is incomparable with consoles too.

Does it need to be a laptop? You could get a half decent desktop for ~£700 especially if you were happy using the TV as a monitor.

If you consider a retail price PS4, 50% of the system cost is CPU/GPU. Using the same philosophy with a PC system gets you close, but with the PS4 being so focused and bespoke at what it does.... you may need to take the GPU a little further on the PC.

Yeah I'm also thinking of a desktop alternative, the portability was a very small part of a laptop being my go to but it is negligible

I'm going to look into it and if so I would be using a TV to save cash for the time being lol.

Thanks again 😁

Desktop PCs have 2 huge advantages over laptops:
1) much more powerful hardware at a similar price point
2) you can upgrade the bits inside - so you can replace the GPU when X new title you want to play comes out in 3 years time, without having to replace the whole machine.

A bit more than £700, but still cheaper and better than an Optimus, would be:

RX 570 will handle modern titles comfortably, including Witcher 3 at high to very high settings at 1080p.
3600 is the go-to midrange gaming CPU, and is capable and should be quite futureproof
Case and power supply should support a wide range of future GPU upgrade options
500gb SSD will get you started for storage and you can add storage further down the line as desired
16gb fast DDR4 RAM should be all you need for the lifetime of that PC.

I couldn't find the category to configure the one you mentioned above, this one was in the pre-made section though and looks good to me. Would you say it's sufficient?

If you click the URL in the post it'll take you straight into the configurator. The one you have listed is nowhere near as good as the one suggested.
