Installing new CPU

I have been doing some research on the current CPU that is in my CLEVO Model W670SB. I currently have:

Intel® Core™ i3-4110M Processor (link to intel website for spec https://intel.ly/2YpmRKA )

I want to replace this and I have looked up the chipset which is:

Intel® HM86 Chipset (link to intel website for spec https://intel.ly/32bF92I )

I think the best processor (if you view all the compatible processors and feel differently then please suggest it) that is compatible is:

Intel® Core™ i7-4910MQ Processor (link to intel website for spec https://intel.ly/3laJnAm )

I have managed to find one site to buy, let me know if you think it's legit ( https://bit.ly/32ht1gX )

They also have the same Socket Supported ( FCPGA946 )

The only difference is that wattage going up from 37W to 47W. And the i7 will have a boost clock of 3.9GHz.

I just want to make sure that this new i7 will work as an upgrade to my current i3 with it's higher power consumption and will I be able to access the higher boost clock speed?

Thank you

I've already opened the unit and the CPU can be removed. Sorry I've forgot to mention that. Everything is ready to go just need to make the right choices. I also want to get an mSATA drive to be the new C: drive and then use the main drive port as storage and then looking into a 16gb duel channel RAM kit to replace the 8gb single stick I currently have. I've tried looking online for the exact same 8gb stick that I have but can't find it.

If you load CPU-Z and go to the SPD tab it will show you the part number and you can google that.

I'm not sure on the CPU, best thing is to run it past PCS. It all depends on the capabilities of the PSU and the motherboard.

mSATA drives are hard to source and expensive and they're no faster than a normal SATA drive. I would suggest sticking with a SATA SSD.

The laptop is in a state that can't be turned on anymore. I have messaged the tech support team. Based on all the information I have given, are you not able to give me any kind of insight? I understand the potential PSU issue. How would I locate this information when looking inside?

You wouldn’t, you’d need to know from the manufacturer for the specs of the PSU and motherboard.

You need to keep in mind even if this all goes to plan and you find a compatible i7 you may well have issues with cooling. Your current laptop's cooling solution will be configured for the i3. The extra wattage and higher clock will generate more heat which the heat sink may not be able to sufficiently dissipate.

For the money you would be looking at here i would say its wiser to buy a new laptop.

I would fully agree with this.

I have an old laptop down stairs that I stuck the highest tier i7 into when it became available for a song. It worked great but it was VERY toasty. The cooling solution just wasn't built for the task at all.

The best of it is I was going from i7 to i7, just a level up in frequency with the same proposed TDP (which everyone knows is absolute bull).

You won't break anything by trying, but you may waste money unfortunately.

Did you find the new i7 thermal throttled badly?

I honestly can't remember. It was a while back and possibly even before thermal throttling. I had the thing fully shut off on me though haha.

It ran in the 90s pretty much doing anything and when you pushed it it was over 100C.

well there is no way I can buy a laptop anywhere near this level for the 350 that the cpu would be. Can anyone recommend an improved cooler for this laptop? It connects to both the CPU and the GPU. Here is a pic of the current one. I do wanna try hard to make this work just on the principle that working with laptops is too hard. I'm very determined

The heatsink is part of the chassis, you don’t get third party options, it’s not like on desktops. Substandard cooling isn’t the issue with it not powering on though, that suggests the CPU isn’t compatible with the motherboard / Bios

I maintain you are throwing £350 down the drain. There is no way an i3 chassis will provide the the cooling or power required to upgrade to an i7.

That being said let us know how it goes.

I would also say that £350 would get you a significantly more powerful brand new off the shelf laptop now from somewhere like PCWorld.

Yeah there is no way this would feasibly work, would be much better putting that £350 towards a new laptop
