Install an extra ssd

Hi,

looking to add a Samsung evo 860 1tb to have more space for my steam library

My questions are;

Is it easy enough to do, I see pc specialist offer an upgrade service (my pc is from here) or easy enough for myself rather than putting it in transit (also would wait until things settle down from corona anyway)

Is that ssd good value for money

from the picture attached where would it be best stored, should I get a tray or bracket?

I do have a m.2 nvme already installed and 2 spare slots for additional nvme but one would need to be directly behind the rtx 2080ti and the other I believe would restrict PCIe lanes so why opting for a sata ssd just to hold and play games.

Adding a drive should be no problem at all and PCS are pretty good, if you call they will probably talk you through it. They have an open case policy so we can work on our machines without voiding the warranty.

Depending on price I am not sure I would fork out for an SSD for storage, a 7200rpm HDD would be OK and possibly cheaper. You can always move things around and have the current favourite games on the main drive and then swap over when needed. Games seem to be getting bigger as well so you may want to consider a 2TB, in which case the HDD option will be quite a bit cheaper.

Ah brill. It is about £140 give or take. I just presumed the hdd would be really slow at loading games (am I right in saying it doesn’t change performance just load times), I have one of those types of harddrives when I purchased it (in picture) so if there is not a big difference in benefit more than happy to use that

Is there a reason you can’t put the games on the OS drive? You’ve got bags of space!

Bought this spec about a year ago. Approx about 200gb left on the os drive and some of the games wanna get quite hefty in size. just weighing up if acceptable enough on the hdd or save that for files and get an sata ssd in addition. Money is a big concern for this type of purchase just don’t wanna throw it away if not a lot of benefit

Ah, ok, yeah, gotcha.

Yes, if the games are installed to the HDD, they'll still run exactly the same, but load times will be slower.

I would say, try installing a fairly hefty game to the HDD, and then try it out to get a feel for it.

If you do decide you need an SSD, the 860 Evo is fantastic, probably the best for reliability and performance. Another good one is the Crucial MX500
