I wanna upgrade to a 3080 card from my current 1060 card when it comes out. Will this PC be ok for it? Will it fit inside etc

I got this PC about 2 years ago from this website. It’s been great but was interested in maybe upgrading to a 3080 graphics card that was announced from Nvidia yesterday.

my main concern is the new card fitting in the case and how much more noise it will make? As I keep my pc in living room and it’s sooooo quiet it’s amazing whisper quiet So glad I have this without compromising on power. I want to keep the noise level as it is now. Ive also not put a graphics card in myself before will it be easy to do? I won’t have to update bios settings or anything complicated like that? Is it a good upgrade from my current 1060 6gb card? Everything else compatible with new card like mobo? Is the cpu still good? I’ve never opened the pc to clean it or anything but it hasn’t gotten louder from dust or anything since buying it. Maybe those dust filters on the case help after all.

current specs are:

PC

Agreed, agreed, agreed! Dust the thing, it will thank you for doing it and the longer you leave it the worse the job is. It certainly won't help your temperatures if there's a load of dead skin and cobwebs in there.

It's not cheap but this particular item ends up being a lot cheaper than continuous cans of compressed air or replacing parts of your unit because it's beyond saving...

But I’ve checked my temps and fan speeds with the CAM app and at idle they are both ok. 30-32 degrees for cpu at 530rpm fan speed and 34 degrees for gpu at 1050rpm fan speed. As far as I know I think the numbers have always hovered around these amounts at idle since the start. They’ve never crept up slowly. I’ve always kept an eye on it with the app.

First thing: Not surprised it hasn't got louder given the soundproofing that case has...that would be like someone playing music at the level of a Jumbo Jet inside a soundproofed studio and you not hearing it outside and saying "there's no music playing"...just because you can't hear it doesn't mean it's not there. There is only so much dust filters can do...don't be surprised to open it up and find every fan caked in dust, especially if it's in a high footfall area like a living room. The inside of a PC should be cleaned throughly at least once a year.

As to the GPU, that build certainly looks strong enough, although I don't know that motherboard. I take it you are either buying a new monitor or have been playing games at a lower resolution (eg 1080p on a 4k) as that is quite a jump in GPU performance
I’m playing on a 4k television samsung ks8000 65” and mostly game at 1080p (sometimes 1440p)

Ok I don’t know much about graphics cards but can someone advise on the below as this will be a big purchase.

I’m thinking of getting a 3090 instead of 3080 I might as well go for the best one and not have to change for years.

I’m concerned the 3090 won’t fit with in my case. It seems the 3090 is considerably larger than other cards? Can someone confirm it will fit? I have no idea.

does my motherboard support this card?I have no idea. I think it does? Will I have to hook it up to the power supply I don’t open PC’s normally.

Will 3090 be louder even at idle?

I’m also confused with the many versions of the same cards that come out. I have no idea which 3090 to go for when it gets released as some are higher spec than other even if it’s called a 3090?

Lastly, people are excited about upgrading to these new GPU’s but what about CPU? Will my current one hold it back still or is it fine? It’s only 2 years old I think.

The 3090 isn’t a gaming card, it’s the new name for the Titan which is a rendering workflow card, pointless for your uses.

For 4k a 3070 would be more than enough.

I meant the new RTX 3090 Nvidia card that’s coming out on Sept 24th I want this one

Ok I’ll stick with 3080. Will 3080 be an easy fit on my specs? Will my CPU gimp it?
Yeah, your base specs are pretty strong, good case, good PSU to cope with the extra power, and good platform.

You won't have any problems with the 3080, but I'd still strongly suggest the 3070 as you just won't use the 3080 for your uses.

If I get a partner card will it already come with cables to connect to my RM850 — 850 Watt 80 PLUS Gold Psu?
or are these cables on the psu in the case already but left unconnected? I don’t really know how it works or what cables connect where to the psu for a 3080 card
i don’t know if the spare 3x PCIe 8 pin cables required for the card are connected to the psu already in the case (but unconnected on the other end) or were supplied seperately from pc specialist in a pack. I dunno where I would’ve put them.

You sound exactly like me! I just bought a PC without a graphics card from PC specialist and will put in the 3080 when it arrives. My issue is also the fact that I don't know if I will get the spare PSU cables (obviously they would usually connect them to the GPU but because I don't have a GPU, they won't need to connect the cables). Does anybody know?

Well, according to Corsair:

" While a small adapter is included with each GPU for your existing power supply cables, that adapter converts two dedicated PCIe power cables to the new 12-pin connector per NVIDIA’s recommended configuration"

So, basically, the GPU will ship with a 12-pin to 8-pin adapter to allow the new cable to connect to 8-pin PSUs. However, PSU manufacturers like Corsair are coming up with their own adapters

Here's an interesting article from Corsair all about the new 12-pin connectors etc:

I'm familiar with the idea of connecting but the issue is : Will I have the 8 pins spare or in the case as I'm buying without a GPU and I don't know if the people building my PC here will include the cables or not that are spare

Any spare cables or anything from the build will be in the welcome box.
