How's your new Ionico 17 laptop doing?

Finally received my Ionico 17 laptop with the RTX 3070 and super excited to finally play videogames again! But oh boy it came with a surprise!

I've installed all temp monitoring tools to see if it all runs smoothly and decided to use Cyberpunk 2077 as an ultimate stress test.

I'm aware that laptops get pretty hot working at full power, however the CPU was getting as high as 90c while operating at 50-60% and the GPU temp was roughly 75-80c (the laptop was placed on a cooling pad btw). And it was just in the main menu of the game, didn't actually get to play the game properly (was scared that it would blow up). I feel that the temp is way too high for a new gaming laptop, one of my ancient laptops actually died while running constantly running 90+c.

Got in touch with the support team, they recommended to give it a few days first and see if the laptop fixes itself. How about your long awaited Ionico? Have you encountered any issues so far or it's all silky smooth?

PS do you know how to switch the keyboard RGB lighting? I found that it can be done in bios, but is there a way to do it by the push of the button perhaps?

Uh oh... a few Ionico's now starting to be received. It will be interesting to hear feedback. My 15 build starts allegedly the 15th March.
Did you include Arctic paste upgrade and if so I wonder if that was applied correctly as some people appear to have reported issues on other models?
Strange advice to wait a few days? Is this a normal response for an IT product? Would be great if just a setting issue for cooling fans rather than a return?
Hopefully somebody with far better knowledge than me will provide some useful advice.

@Paulbax The past usually need a few cycle to stabilize, but this can change between past.
@troshik1991 You can expect high temperature in games (whatever the game). Looks fine to me as long as you are in the game menu and not idling on the desktop. Anyway you can lower temperatures by simply enabling vsync and even change display rate (it will save power too!) or use different power profile.

Thanks. A little googling (dangerous) may provide an explanation? I thought not a lot was happening during menus (other than perhaps some background loading) but perhaps the menus are not frame locked which MAY mean your laptop is running an unnecessary and unusually high frame rate? I guess this may be why Romain337 advises the vsync enablement?
I was hoping temps below 80 and below 90 under max peak load or else thermal throttling? Seems the 10785h depending on the chassis/setup can run quite hot and read perhaps up to 100degC??? Ultimately we are asking more and more of the intel chips so guess they may be getting hotter than previously accepted?
More feedback should help clarify.... and reduce the number of my "guess and perhaps" caveats and change opinions to facts?🙂

@Paulbax Yes, unlocked framerate = hardware pushing the max framerate and never have a chance to breath.
when you enable vsync it can help because there is little time for the gpu and cpu to idle (some µsec, waiting for the screen to refresh). But nowaday with vendors pushing screens to 300Hz it can have no more effect at all.

About temperatures, I have a msi gs73vr 6rf since late 2016, I play game and sometime big session (8+ hours). The CPU and GPU can go up to 92°C (depending of the load). *sometime* my system report some CPU throttling but it's perfectly normal. It work perfectly fine since day 1. I repasted it last year only because it was reaching 96°C (also the battery is K.O also since a few month so it run without battery and it change nothing).

I think you should worry if you notice high temperature (95C+) and/or suddent loss in performance / reboot / blue screen when you play game (or unusual/same temperature when idle. My MSI is at ~48C right now).

Don't worry and profit :)

sample vsync on vs vsync off:
I just did a quick search "vsync on vs vsync off".

Which Control Center your Ionico came with? I know they rushed and shipped almost all with an ancient version not suited for this 2021 laptop. But if you call them / live chat, they'll provide a link with the newest drivers, including Control Center 3.x.
This allows you to set a lot of things, including fan profiles, CPU and GPU max power limits, but above all, for your desire, the Temperature you don't want your CPU to exceed. Of course if you set that at like 90°C (you shall set 10°C delta from 100 Tjmax in the CC), any work which pushes it further, will have the CPU throttles down to not exceed your max Temp request.

Any cooling pad suggestions? I ordered same as yours Ionico 17.3'' Series RTX3070, and looking for a good cooling pad. Would be greatful If it is possible to share any of. (I am not fully aware of sharing some produtcs can be illegal or not, sorry for that guys)

I had a metal cooling pad by Coolermaster with 3 USB small fans in the past. Fans broke but Cooling pad is very sturdy and full of metal mesh of holes for the entire surface.
Then for around 10 euros I bought 2 usb powered big diameter fans on Amazon, 12 cm size. One cable connects both with a Y connection. I could fit them exactly where the laptop intakes are (just some black latches to fix them below the pad). Voilà. Nothing can be more effective than huge 12 cm fans. If you buy even larger. Just be sure they fit as depth inside the pad.

First of all before we jump the gun here did you buy Windows with the laptop?

1. If so have you continuously run all Windows update until there are no more updates left?

If you didn't order it with a copy of Windows how have you installed Windows?

If you are using the version that came preinstalled then its not configured for your machine its just there for PCS to setup the machine.

In this instance you need to do a fresh install of Windows from a USB stick and then go back to step 1.

The next point to cover, @Romain337, bless him is clearly trying to help however what he has stated is completely wrong. Those temperatures are not fine and thermal paste does not need a few runs to stabilize (although there may be language barrier issues here).

*Edit* just to clarify those temperatures are not fine if they are sustained.

I don't see at all where I am wrong but it's okay I'm not trying to be teh tek guru of this forum. Let's say it's barrier language and lack of details.

As previously stated the thermal paste PCS use does not need a few cycles to stabilise, It is either correctly applied or it isn't.
If the CPU temps @troshik1991 is experiencing are sustained then they are not ok and something isn't right.

I can't give my experience yet (my Ionico is on its way) but another guy I know with Ionico 17 RTX3070 (he's in the Italian PCS forum) just told me its laptop keeps 80° temperature, max 85° while gaming at Gear 5.
This with MX-4 paste applied by PCS.
And these are the sort of temps I would expect to see under heavy loads. That's very similar to how the Vyper performed.

*edit* Grammar.

I'm not gonna lie, it makes me scare a bit. I ordered Ionico 17.3" RTX3070 and I really don't want to cancel or amend my order completely but this kind of issues makes me overthinking about "Have I done the good decision to buy Ionico/TongFang?". Maybe I am exaggerating. However I really want to get my Laptop after fully tested and without any issues on. Because I spent huge amount of money and I don't want to see my money wasted, considering waited long time. :(

Hope you guys sort all the problem.

Uhh dunno if i missed it but what sort of fan speed we got here? Also is that CPU running at 45w TDP mode or the other configurable TDP that i dont know what it is off the top of my head.

I mean its not surprising me tbh getting 90c yeah its quite hot and depending on the laptop i would like to see 85 and under for performance laptops but also it depends on battery settings and all that, I have an aorus laptop right now that gets 90c but for the size of the thing its understanderble having so much power in such a slim form, when it gets there fan speed is like 80% but it does cool the thing down and shove the hot air out meaning its working (some laptops trap the heat instead of managing to force it out the unit) and i have had this for almost 4 years at this point (im looking to upgrade to one of these soon)

Them i7s are bound to get hot, Personally i want to limit it at a certain speed (Probs 4ghz for me), i dunno if that's easily configurable in these bios's Also as many have said, Frame limit the game, personally i do 90 Fps that monitor supports 165 so its gonna want to reach that before it stops trying to force more power to the game.

No, no and no.

You should never be limiting a laptops advertised speeds to make it run at an acceptable temperature. If its running at a sustained 90C something is wrong with the cooling system. It will almost certainly be thermal throttling to get down to 90C which means it will be drastically underperforming.

I have had this exact CPU in two different laptops and neither got anywhere near 90C for a sustained period of time. One of them sits around 78C.

One of those laptops was the Vyper 17 which uses the same physical chassis and cooling system as the Ionico it sat 80-85C. This laptop should not be running at 90C.

*edit* For readabillity.

Hi Barlew.
I have a Ionico 15 in pre-production. I have requested windows pre-installed.
What do you mean by PCS not setting it up for the laptop? I was not expecting that I would have to install it again? I have had many laptops over the years from traditional vendors and never once had to reinstall windows from scratch. I guess I could but surely paying someone about £2k, I expected them to do it right?
Can you please clarify?
Thanks.

If you have selected for Windows to be preinstalled then you shouldn't have to reinstall (unless in the unlikely event of a problem).
Just make sure that when the laptop arrives you keep running Windows Update until there are no more updates, to ensure the laptop is properly configured before you use it.

This is my assumption but PCS do not have the time to pull updates from the internet until the laptop is fully up to date. They will install known good drivers supplied by Tong Fang. These will invariably be out of date just because of the frequency software updates are released these days.

This is a custom laptop, you WILL need to know how to clean install and configure windows at some point. You'll also need to know how to repaste it every year or so.

It's like the difference between buying a normal car and a kit car. You need to know the ins and outs of a custom PC to be able to maintain it.

If you've ordered with windows it will come fully configured, you'll just need to run all windows updates when you receive it.

Barlew, Spydertracks. Thanks. I will keep on top of the windows updates.
Did wonder ref the paste.
I ordered with 2 drives so hopefully made my life easier for potential windows reinstalls.
To be honest, I had not realised a specialist build came with more maintenance? Would I have still had to repaste eg an Asus gaming laptop?
