The idea behind homeplugs is to use the electricity cables already in your home as a replacement to network cables. This is an alternative to wireless. They are extremely good, not entirely sure how they work as they work across ring mains too.

Extremely worth the money, the only problem I have had which I have pointed out to others is interference with my Z5500 Logitech speakers, I get a popping sound in my boss whenever the access light goes off.

Basically the copper cables in your walls can carry a huge frequency and your power supply is only using 50Hz. The homeplugs filter the frequency on the cable, and use the higher ranges to send/receive data (same idea to how telephone/ADSL works over the same line). If your looking to get some be aware that they operate at different speeds and whilst the lower rated plugs give a constant signal which is a benefit over wireless, they are quite a slow connection.

So i'd be better off getting the wifi card anyway?? Which is probs what i'll do as the homeplugs sound risky and i somehow think our internet providers will try and find a way to charge us extra for it :L

Na dont be put off by them, if you get a decent set of Homeplugs they are fantastic :). Well worth the money, especially for people like me who have quite weak wifi signal.

I didn't mean to put you off. They are really good and not risky. I just meant to make sure that you get the faster connection.

but seriously... which will be faster? is it worth paying an extra £50 just to get 0.2mbps faster? and maybe 2ms faster ping? :L when it could easily be slower anyway? my friend just got the normal wifi card and he used to get about 80ms ping and 6mbps download.. and when he got the new wifi card he got 45ms ping and 7.5mbps?

@frenchy - erm what brand have you got? and could recommend a decent set?

thanks dude

I have these

Devolo Homeplug

Sorry only just noticed your message

I would deffinately recommend them, I have a friend who also uses them and they are fantastic. As ive mentioned a few times though for some reason they conflict with my Z5500 speakers and therefore I cant use them while the speakers are on. I dont know if this is just a problem with my speakers / plugs though tbh.

My friends speakers are perfectly fine. I have a feeling its just because of the bass power on my system. Not really sure though.

Wireless will still eb fine :).

The homeplug basically just replaces a really long ethernet cable. I use mine because it would mean runnign a cable from one end of the house to the other. Why goto the hasstle of doing that when the electricians did a good (or not so good) job of it already

Yes, you can use Wireless and Homeplug at the same time on the same router.
As far as the router is concerned the homeplugs don't exist, they're just like standard ethernet to the router.

I use Powerline 9020 Adapters by Comtrend and they work just fine. I think they are supplied by BT with BT Vision as there are a number of them for sale on eBay, presumably by users who just want wireless. The most recent ones are I believe black and need to have a green dot (label) if they are the latest revision.
I chose these as they also have a standard 3 pin socket on the front so they act as a pass through. Useful if you are short on sockets.

Hi m8,

You can get wifi boosters for around the £50 mark, which extend the signal quite dramatically, I had read that the mains plugs work best if they are operating on the same circuit. for example, if you cut the power to one part of your house via the circuit protector, and the power still operates in another part of the house, they are on different circuits (usually for trip protection), any signal you send down the mains will have to negotiate this, and it will pick up interference/dirty signals. It depends a lot on what you are intending to do wireless, if it is gaming, this will want a faster connection, i always connect direct to the router via a cat 5 cable for this, but most stuff wireless is fine, and getting better every year.

Best of luck with your venture and i hope it goes well

Being on different ring circuits will make no difference, unless they are on different phases.
& you would have to live in a very large house to have a 3 phase supply.
