Home/Office build line check - No gaming or anything very intense

Hi to all you wonderful people.

I've spent a couple of days soaking up the forum and would like to thank you all for all you post. I was going to be buying a pre-built but what seems like a complete lack of decent options at my price point and the fact that there is so much good info here and people willing to help has made be alot more confident in going this route instead.

My needs are quite basic - I'm not a gamer and don't really use anything that is CPU or GPU hungry - webdev in Notepad++, ssh, GIMP & office don't really need much - but would maybe like to play around with some 3D one day for general interests sake and also some WebGL.

I'm going to connect a couple of 24" monitors which I'll source elsewhere and will hopefully be able to pick those up for ~£250 for the pair and I'd like to be able to bring everything in for £1100/1200 - so ~800/900ish on the box.

The spec below is pretty much the same as one I've seen linked a few times as a "solid" system so I'm hoping it works well for my needs.

(My current desktop is a 15+yo Pentium 4 Dell box with WinXP & 2Gb RAM :) )

Can anyone see any obvious issues? - apart from the fact that it's really boring.

Ok if you can stretch to £993 on the box this should do you nicely, I've upped to the 5600x CPU which gives you the latest gen cpu, I've given you a better M.2 for your primary drive, and upped the PSU to a 750W RMx, this will give you a good upgrade path in the future.

Thanks for that.

That all makes sense - bit more, quieter, power and a step up in processor and ssd. Really want to try stick to my budget and would like to keep at 250 for my monitors so need to lose 50. I've already got wireless and corded keyboard and mice and don't own anything that involves micro sds or dvds so I can create less waste by leaving all those out. Doing that leaves me about spot on.

You could try waiting a while to see if the 5600G comes into stock, which is supposed to be in August. That would be cheaper than the 5600X and a tiny bit slower, but would have very decent graphics built in. I'd definitely want that over the ancient 710.

No idea if PCS will stock it, though.

Have to agree that a system with a 5600G would be ideal for you. A major brand is selling a 5600G, 16GB, 256gb SDD and 1TB HDD system with a 3060 GPU (don't ask me why you would ever pair a 5600G with a 3060 GPU ... pointless) for £999. So take off the 3060 and that will definately be sub £800. So I could well see custom spec systems with the sort of spec you want sub £900 in a couple of months. Much better to have the integrated GPU of the 5600G than the very old 710.

I also don't think you need a 750W PSU. You don't play games, do anything intensive or even upgrade that often (15 years ...). For office type apps, a 550W TXm PSU is plenty.

Thanks for the further replies.

The ancientness of the 710 does worry me a bit and even though I may not necessarily need a GPU I'm not sure I want to wait and see if the 5600G becomes available. I can stretch my budget a little bit - would it be worth going for the 1030 instead?

I think I've settled on getting a couple of Samsung S24R350FHU 24" IPS Full HD Monitor LS24R350FHUXEN which I can get for £250 for the pair from Laptops direct - hope posting a link is ok
although I am tempted by the bargain basement LENOVO C24-25 Full HD 23.8" VA LCD Monitors at PC World which are £90 each
which would certainly help budgetwise. Is there really any difference at that end of the market?

Probably going to hit the various buy buttons soon as otherwise I'll just spend even more time umming and ahing

The 5600G is available! Here's a build based on it that would work for you.

Note that the motherboard only has one HDMI and one DP output, so you'd need to get a DP-HDMI adapter for one of your monitors, I think, if you're going for one that doesn't have DP support.

Thanks for that - I should have been more patient.

I ordered my last posted build on Monday - from other threads I've read it's not too late to change. Do I just take your build link and contact support with it to switch?

What did you go for? You can probably just edit it yourself in your order settings.

I went for the last build I posted with the 5600X and 710.

Not sure where my order settings are so I've emailed support requesting the change - OUT 5600X & 710, IN 5600G - hoping that works out. Gives me a little bit more to play with out of my budget which is always useful.

Pre-production - 20 working days.

Getting there...

(Picked up a couple of Iiyama G-Master G2440HSU Black hawk 24" monitors @ £100 each - 1920x1080 75Hz IPS)

Onwards and upwards.

A note of caution. Noticed looking through AMD's specs, the 5600G doesn't support PCIe 4.0, so could become an issue for any future upgrade.

It's not an issue, pcie 3 is compatible with pcie 4 devices, you'll just be limited for ssd speeds. Has no impact on gpu performance.

Off to a pretty disappointing start.

The window on the case isn't fitted properly - one corner not clasped at all and I'm sensing something about to break as I try and fix it. how does that get out the door? Also scratched. :(
