High temps for intensive workloads on a laptop normal?

Apologies if this isn't on the right thread.

I very recently received my 17.3" Recoil IV (Review on the way) so far it's been a really snappy machine and does everything I need to do lightning fast.

However, I am experiencing some unusually high temperatures that I have been keeping an eye on with HWMonitor for the last few days and it seems I have been hitting 70C when not doing anything too demanding (web browsing on chrome, Word doc, etc) and as high as 95c when doing simulations in MatLab, Rendering in 3dS Max and the odd round of Call of Duty.

Surely this isn't normal or expected, anyone with a Recoil or similar laptop seen the same temps? perhaps just a case of poorly applied thermal paste?

Well, you have a 125W 10-core unlocked CPU inside a laptop, so it does not seem wrong at all to have 70° while using chrome (it should not really be considered that light anyway, have you seen the amount of RAM that it eats?). My 65W 4-Core Ryzen 3 gets close to 60° when doing the same, so I'm assuming it's fine. Repasting with high-quality paste can get your temps lower a little bit, but don't expect miracles.

Does your laptop have something like control/gaming center software to allow you to change profiles? When under those light/medium workloads and even on older games, you can easily stick to the quiet/office profile, that will limit the power of your CPU and will bring temperatures and noise down by quite a lot. It drops around 10 degrees on mine.

Great. But them I assume that now you have quite a loud laptop all/most of the time, right? If you're ok with that, then all good!

It's definitely audible when you're on word, web browsing and whatnot but I usually have spotify or a YouTube video playing in the background which covers the fan noise up nicely. Even more so than if I have my headset on.

Apart from my initial concerns with the temps the laptop is superb. I'll write a full review when I have spent more time with it.

Did you manage to test the different power profiles as well, not just the custom fan profiles? Using quiet mode for those light/medium workloads would make your laptop cooler, so no need for the fans to be louder. I use it most of the times, apart from heavy gaming sessions.

I have, I mostly just keep it in the balanced (entertainment as it's called on my laptop) and that seems to balance the temps, fan speed and performance pretty well. My fan speed isn't anywhere near what I would consider annoying and hasn't pulled me away from what I am doing, Youtube, Spotify, Work, or Gaming.

Ill keep an eye on it to see if I need to tweak around with it but even despite what seemed like high temperature I haven't ever seemed to have my performance throttled.

Those profiles are made to be adjusted frequently, so I would use entertainment mode only for 3d rendering, video encoding and gaming. Any other type of task can still be done with good enough performance on quiet mode, especially on a high-core CPU. I would go even far by saying that entertainment should be used only for the heavy games, as some old or not so graphics intense games can even be played on quiet mode. The GPU is not affected by those modes, so only the power that's delivered to the CPU will be lower on the quiet profile, dropping the FPS a bit but depending on the game, they're still totally playable with more than 100 FPS.

Ok, I am not really sure, as I had considered only my CPU running at much higher Watts for it to be hitting higher temperature. Read above, chrome does take a lot of ram and processing power.
