High Idle Temps with 3700X / Wraith Prism cooler?

Yeah, IMHO anything over the 3600 deserves an AIO, for the 3700x the Corsair H100i is optimal, for anything above that I'd get the H115i. The Corsair AIO's are absolutely fantastic, I've had an H100i on my media server since 2014 running 24/7 and it's rock solid.
Sweet, looks like that'll be my next investment. Stupid question but I would need to put thermal paste on it as well right? I've never used an AIO so this will be new to me

I'm not brown-nosing to AMD
I am at the moment, in my eyes, under Lisa Su, they can do no wrong, not just with amazing chips, but also with their transparency and working with their fan community to optimise platforms and gaming.

I'm not an AMD fanboy, nor Intel, nor Apple, nor Microsoft etc etc, I always go for the best available at that time. And currently, AMD are clear winners in almost every department.

The Corsair AIO come pre applied with high performance paste and it's excellent, no need to swap it out, so you just peel back a protective film and bolt it onto the motherboard. They're really well designed.

I get that. At the moment, AMD seems to be a clear decision if you look at it in terms of performance per GBP. Plus they all come with CPU coolers whereas Intel don't if I recall. But intel are also really good for workstations (And is what I was going to use for a build I was going to do for my mother until I upgraded my CPU.) Then there's if you're gonna OC but I don't OC because I feel the 3700X is fast enough plus I would need a stronger cooler.

In the workstation space, the AMD chips are DOUBLE the performance to Intels and vastly cheaper. The same is true in the server space.

AMD DESKTOP chips such as the 3900x and 3950x actually outperform the Intel workstation CPU’s. Intel have lost all competition EXCEPT the 9900k or is for single threaded, but those are only really relevant in 1080p 244hz gaming which is a very niche zone.
Any other area, AMD just destroy intel.

Hi again,

Looking back at AIO options, one that I have seen with positive reviews is an Arctic Freezer II 240mm (that's the size that'd fit the top of my case) and the price is fairly reasonable too. Would this one be worth looking into?

Yeah, good find, it does fit the B450 AM4 socket, and does have surprisingly good reviews considering how cheap it is:

It's a budget option, so it's not going to be as effective as a corsair, you may still see high resting temps.

So looking at a Corsair AIO, these prices I assume are about right? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Radiator-Advanced-Lighting-Software-compatible/dp/B07BWNWQKJ
Yes, that’s a pretty competitive price. If you wanted one a bit cheaper, Scan do refurbished ones that come with 6 month warranty I believe:

Scan are very good and can be trusted, but personally I’d pay the extra and get a new one because the Corsair warranty is absolutely superb.

I was gonna say I've seen the ones on scan but I'd rather pay the few pounds extra and get it new with Corsair warranty 😁

Just an additional, the BIG bonus with the corsair HXXXi series (the ones with the I on the end) is that they have software interaction and so you can monitor and adjust fans, pumps speeds, lights, plus you can set warnings so it will either sound an alarm or flash on the screen. It may sound like unnecessary, but in my experience it's extremely valuable.

I've had the H100i on my media server running 24/7 since 2014 and it's absolutely rock solid, never had an issue and keeps the temps very low.

Can I ask what temps you're seeing @ idle & full load?

Idle is about 35 - 38c
Load is about 70 - 75c

But this is on an i7 4700k at around 180W under load

That's vs the 3700x which maxes at about 90W

So you'll probably see nearer mid 60's at an absolute guess.

UPDATE

So I've just looked on PCS and according to their specs, a 240mm rad won't fit in my case (let down.) So now do I choose to go with a 120mm AIO or a high end air cooler such as a Dark Rock Pro 4?

Yeah, whichever is the latest
sorry if i shouldnt just reply to this, but i have a ryzen 7 3700x on a b450 tomahawk motherboard. it is at stock settings on an 240mm aio. i am idle at around 40-60c. it will just bounce around between those temps. while gaming it will get in the 60s and on occt stress test for 1 hour it maxed at 78 c . is this normal or should i worry about it? this is much higher temps with the same aio than my r 2600 was.

Some Ryzen chips are notorious for having less than accurate temperature sensors...my 3600 bounces around between low 40s and high 60s even when the system is completely idle. Those temps are within normal limits for that chip
It's not the chips themselves, it's the software you're using to read them.

On Ryzen, you really want to use Ryzen Master to check temps, and don't install any third party as they can conflict with the readings.

Also, make sure you're reading the package temp and not a sensor like the TDie's or any of those as they will always be a lot higher than the actual CPU temp.

Those look totally fine. An AIO will always have higher resting temps, but those load temps look perfectly healthy.
