High Idle Temps with 3700X / Wraith Prism cooler?

Hi guys,

So I've recently installed a RYZEN 7 3700X with a Wraith Prism Cooler set to low and the temps are all over the place! As I'm writing this, the lowest temp I've had is 41 degrees and the highest is 70 degrees whilst on Modern Warfare. Even with Modern Warfare playing, shouldn't temperatures be lower? If so, what can I do to reduce temps?

Many thanks

Are you sure the thermal paste is applied correctly?

70 on load is actually very respectable, but I would have thought the resting temp should be lower.

Hi,

The thermal paste was already pre-applied to the cooler. Is it worth putting fresh paste on and setting the cooler to high?

On a quick google, it does appear that resting temps are a bit higher than perhaps one may expect, and what you're seeing is about right:

"The
Wraith Prism
is a great little cooler. I'm idling at around 35-40c depending on ambient
temp
, and it's usually around 55-60c while gaming. The hottest it ever gets is 75c during Cinebench R20. ... I was running into issues with the
3700x
hitting 85.8c max during gaming using the stock cooler".

No that doesn't seem to make a difference
That case isn’t really designed for such a high end processor, it’s got pretty poor airflow.
Saying that though, if the max temp you’re seeing is 70c during gaming, that’s actually pretty impressive and nothing to be concerned about at all.

But long term, I would advise getting a better case. The Fractal Focus G is an excellent budget case at under £50, or if you want something a bit more bling, have a look at almost any Lian-Li case, they’re amazing.

So upon a reboot with nothing open except CoreTemp, I've idled at a consistent 47-48 degrees which I assume is okay for a 3700X?

Idle doesn't matter too much unless load temps are too high.

If your load temps were hitting thermal limits, then you'd look to idle temps to determine if it was a paste issue.

Those temps, while not amazing and not optimal, are not affecting the performance of the chip under load which is the main concern.

I would keep an eye on it for a few months until you're sure the load temps are fine, you really want them to remain under 78c really.

But yes, whilst not ideal, don't worry too much about idle.

Awesome, admittedly when I was running my 5 2600 I was idling around 30 degrees but I would assume that a more powerful CPU would demand a more powerful cooler and I might invest in an AIO rather than having to get a new case as I'm not very experienced in swapping cases at the moment

This was with the wraith stealth as well but I'm now doing more editing / streaming hence the upgrades

To give some perspective, the 3600 equates to around the 2700x, so the 3700x is quite substantially more powerful than the 2600, we're talking around double performance.

It's a great upgrade for that purpose, the 3700x is a superb processor.

It really is. I'm not brown-nosing to AMD but it feels much more responsive than my 2600 but the 2600 is no slouch for day to day stuff either. AIO's would help me see cooler temps though for my 3700X right? Because the Prism is a pretty solid air cooler regardless.

Yeah, IMHO anything over the 3600 deserves an AIO, for the 3700x the Corsair H100i is optimal, for anything above that I'd get the H115i. The Corsair AIO's are absolutely fantastic, I've had an H100i on my media server since 2014 running 24/7 and it's rock solid.
