High-End Gaming PC

Hey guys,

It's my first PC in a very long time and wanted to build something special. It will mainly be used for competitive shooters on a 27" monitor and AAA games on a 65" OLED. What do you think I could upgrade and what do you think is overkill? Do I need extra fans? Anything else you would add and lastly should I wait for the new 7800X3D reviews (heard rumours it might be worth the 3/4 week wait for it)

Many thanks

Tommy

What make and model?

Again, what make and model? This doesn't tell us anything about power requirements?

What's your max budget?

Can you include the configurable link at the bottom of the quote?

Thanks for the reply, I currently have a Gigabyte M27Q for console gaming but it's only 170hz so I'll be getting the new LG 27" Ultragear 27GR95QEB OLED which is 240hz.

The 65" tv is an LG C2.

Max budget is around 6k (not including monitor)

Well, this is a slightly silly build: it's definitely more than anyone could consider necessary. But I still think you can save quite a lot of hundreds of pounds.

First, don't go for the overclocked version: there's so little overclocking room that it just isn't worth it. For a miniscule performance gain you are spending lots of money and getting noise and heat in return. The motherboard is excessive. The RAM is excessive (and I doubt you'd actually get 64GB of DDR5-6000 running stably, though I may be wrong on that). The storage can be done more efficiently. The power and the cooling would ideally be better. You're paying for the "technician assisted setup", which means someone will help you plug the machine in. You can do that yourself (or we'll be more than happy to help!). It's not at all difficult. I'm also not convinced the Platinum warranty is worth the cash, but that's a personal decision!

Here's what I'd suggest. (I won't say "recommend", because I think this is excessive, but that's your call!)

Thank you sck451, it's advice like this to a complete novice like myself which is invaluable.

It's taken me a while to compute (pardon the pun) all of it but I'm beginning to understand that less is more and throwing money at the situation isn't the answer, so again thank you. Regarding the comment about the PSU if I started to enter the world of running dual monitors and connecting more peripherals to the machine is there where a 1200w power supply would be more beneficial?

I also had no idea I'd gone for the overclocking version or that there is a more efficient way of managing the storage (again thank you).

In regards to noise, is there a trade off between power and noise levels or is there a way of throwing money at it to have both great power and a quieter machine (better fans possibly or cooling system that isn't maintenance heavy?)

In regards to the RAM I've just watched a LTT video done about a month ago in regards to DDR5 which has quite honestly left me more confused if you could shed anymore light on your reasoning as to why 32 is better than 64 that would be greatly appreciated.

pps. Would you wait for the 7800X3D which is releasing in a few weeks as people seem to be suggesting it maybe the better and cheaper CPU for gaming pc builds?

Yes, it would definitely be worthwhile waiting, the 7950x3D is not good for gaming unless you know how to disable the lesser chiplet, otherwise it reduces gaming performance quite drastically in a lot of titles. It's designed for big workloads like Rendering and then disabling half the cores when you want to game.

The 7900X3D similarly is not going to be as good for gaming either.

There have been stability issues with 64Gb RAM generally, but also, you don't need 64Gb, 32 of it will never be used. It's wasting money for zero benefit. Having more RAM doesn't improve performance at all, it just maintains performance IF the programs you're using have a requirement for it, otherwise it just sits there never being accessed. No gaming on the planet would require more than 32Gb.

The advantages are about the hardware in the PC rather than what's connected to it. A 4090 needs nothing less than an 850W PSU. I wouldn't go below 1000W. There's a decent case to be made for overspeccing and going for 1200W. Partly this is because of the demands of the current GPU: they can have current spikes that draw significantly more than the standard power rating, so it's worth being over the recommended minimum. What's more, you may upgrade the system in a few years' time and who knows what tech will look like then. So best to be on the safe side. For the extra cost in a build of this price, I think it's well worth it.

Not being overclocked is the best way! At the top end, you need significantly more power (i.e. electicity usage) for very small gains, so an overclock gains little and adds heat and noise. The best solution is to have good airflow: a good case with good fans. The above system is about as good as you can get on this front.

In regards to the RAM I've just watched a LTT video done about a month ago in regards to DDR5 which has quite honestly left me more confused if you could shed anymore light on your reasoning as to why 32 is better than 64 that would be greatly appreciated.
The problem isn't with 64GB in itself, but with the four sticks of memory. AMD's current generation has some difficulty running four sticks at 6000MHz. Two sticks will run fine. PCS doesn't stock 2x32GB kits, only 4x16GB kits, so you might have stability issues or have to run the RAM slower. Going above 32GB for a gaming system is also unnecessary as @SpyderTracks says, so I'd definitely stick with the 2x16GB set.

pps. Would you wait for the 7800X3D which is releasing in a few weeks as people seem to be suggesting it maybe the better and cheaper CPU for gaming pc builds?
For a pure gaming build, yes, it will be the best choice.

The 7950X is actually basically a 7800X3D with an additional 7700X bolted on the side. The X3D part will be the best for gaming. As @SpyderTracks mentions, there are currently some situations where the OS/driver doesn't know which part of the CPU to use for which tasks, which can cause performance loss. I think this will be ironed out in Windows/drivers/BIOS updates, but it may take a while, and honestly the 7800X3D is the ideal for gaming anyway. As long as you don't mind waiting for it!

Hey guys,

I’ve been holding out purchasing a gaming PC with the 7950x3D for the 7800x3D. Does anyone know when pcspecialist might be getting them in stock?

We've had no word on expected dates, it does appear unfortunately it was a paper launch much to everyones dismay which means that stocks will likely come through in low batches for the first few months, so afraid we can't give any estimation better than just pre ordering a system now to get in the queue
