Help with quote? HIGH END GAMING + EDITING PC

Hiya there, allow me to introduce myself.

I am currently a media student in his second year of college, and my computer which i bought from this site 5 years ago is now getting old and worn. It has served its purpose!

That being said, i am looking to buy a new computer that will last me the same as my last one did. I hope to get 5 years out of this (last college year + 4 years at uni), but now i have the money to spend on it.

There are a few simple things i am looking for.

  • Last 5 years
  • Be able to run on two screens (I currently own a 24 inch, and i'd like to invest in a 27 inch and hopefully run them alongside eachother)
  • Be able to record gaming for a good amount of years (I run a machinima channel)
  • Look good case wise (although i dont want to spend mega bucks on one, but enough so it looks cool in my Uni room)
  • have a nice wired keyboard and mouse

Here is the quote i have so far. I would really appreciate help with this, as this is obviously going to cost a pretty penny! Please add and alter this as you feel fit, Im going to be doing digital media production so i have to take into account motion graphics and the like too.

I literally have not a clue when it comes to making a high end spec like this, and i look forward to any help i may receive!

Thanks
Charlie

A pair of home plugs should give you a more reliable connection than a wireless card. A caviar black will be faster than the standard hdd and you may also want to consider SLI in the future. For your budget you could get an i7-3770 and the gtx 670, I'd put the money of the fast track in your spec and take at least silver warranty for £5.

Hi,

Is what you've spent in your draft build your maximum and you'd like us to suggest some savings, or can you go a bit higher?

Working along the lines of your current draft build and not spending much more money, I'd first switch the RAM to 1600MHz because that is the native speed of the memory controller in the chip you've chosen. Gamers will quite likely say you won't notice the difference in gaming and I believe them. I'm not a gamer, I do very intensive CPU and GPU tasks at work and I always match things in this way. Interestingly the 1600MHz RAM is cheaper!

The other minor upgrade would be to get a better PSU to give you options for adding a second graphics card at a later date. The Sandy Bridge enhanced chip you've chosen supports 40 lanes of PCIe 3.0, which means in the future you can benefit from using two cards both at 16x and even a 3rd card at 8x if you wanted, subject to motherboard and case.

If you can afford to go a tiny bit higher the changes I'd make are as follows: -

Intel X79 Pro motherboard (£6 more)
16GB Memory from 1333 to 1600 (£2 less)
Corsair 750W Enthusiast PSU from 600W PSU (£13 more)
Tripple copper heatpipe cooler for standard cooler (£6 more)

If you have a bigger budget than that then the GTX 670 would be my card of choice if money was little object. That adds another £110 more though.

If you go up to a six core processor you'll also see a big increase in cost. If you had the funds you could go higher but it's about £200 more.

You could also consider the Ivy Bridge chips (which are newer) but Intel hasn't released the higher end ones yet, just the mainstream ones. You could look at a build using the i7 3770 chip instead and get similar performance and slightly lower power usage.

I think if you want to go for reliability and longevity you would be better off steering clear of the overclocked models.

I'm not very knowledgeable on cases or monitors, so I'll leave that advice to someone more qualified on those items.

That's what I think anyway.

Thanks for the help so far!

Really helpful guys, Yes i am willing to pump up the price if need be but i'm not prepared to spend more than £1600 on this computer.

Also, Because i will be in university i want to take every precaution in getting everything i need before i go, as there is no garuntee i can upgrade (such as another card in SLI) due to funds, That being said, if you have any other idea's then please throw them my way!

Also, I put on the wireless card because currently my computer is in my bedroom, and im not sure what the internet connectivity is going to be like at University (Ethernet or wireless) So im trying to be safer rather than sorry and do it just incase, i have an ethernet spare if there is a direct connection.

The price has gone up to max £1800 pounds, does this mean SLI is a better option now? What do you guys think? Hoping to order this sunday!

A single GTX 670 will max most games at high settings. If you are gaming in 1 monitor you could consider a single gpu and add a 2nd one in the future.

I'll be hopefully running this on 2 screens, 1 1650X1240 (i think thats correct) and then the new 27 inch.. I'd like this to last 5 years and can only buy the things i need now and not later ( university )

The game will still run in 1 screen. If you want to futureproof yourself for a long time then a SLI setup makes sense but you could save some money adding the 2nd card later on when they become more affordable.

I'm not in a position to buy things later :p All my money will be going straight out of the window when im in Uni, So i cant afford to wait. I need everything ready now :p

Thanks for the advice though, i'll see when the time comes i guess.

So knowing that the £1800 is the budge now, is there any chance of any other improvements you see fit? Im willing to spend the full amount now, even if things will get cheaper in the future... I apologize if i appear stubborn or something but for a student i need to make sure :p

I would advise you look into other brands for the keyboard and mouse, while researching for mine, I found really bad reviews for the Razer keyboards in particular. They don't last very long and have a cheap 'plasticy' feel to them according to the majority of them. Furthermore you may find that you can save some money shopping around for them. (One of the biggest online retailers springs to mind).

I personally have a friend who has used the keyboard for about a year and has had no issues with it, I have also purchased from Razer before and have had no issues. That being said, i will take your advice onboard and will keep the current keyboard and mouse available incase this one goes bust :)

Also, the £99 extra fee is very necessary at the moment, im at an extremely busy time!

If theres any additional information i should have about running two graphics cards, or anything else on that matter please dont hesitate to say ^^

It is faster than the standard drive. Also I would seriously advise on shopping around for the peripherals, you will most likely find them cheaper from companies who can afford to buy them in bulk. This will also help to reduce the total cost. (remember that you can make a new amazon account and get the free 4 week prime trial if you have already used it, just remember to cancel the automatic upgrade or you will be £50 worse off)

Okay i will take your advice and shop around for Peripherals :)

Also, Is getting windows 7 ultimate worth the extra 30 pounds from 64 bit professional?

No clue on operating systems sorry. I would assume that you would be better off putting the money towards the Caviar Black if you were not sure which of the two versions to get.

Oh, So really i'd only need 64 bit home? Sweet! Thats shaved off quite a lot.

I have a little bit more to play with, Would an SSD be good to get as a primary, then run a 2 TB Caviar black as a secondary? (or vice versa) is it worth it?
