As Vanthus said, line the card up with the long gap in the case. You have 2 PCI slots (light blue), so put the card in the one which will line the back of the card (where the aerials fit) with the long gap.

Unfortunately the lower of the two connection ports where it's supposed to fit seems to be lined up with the metal plate with lots of holes in it which is cause of my difficulty - the aerials fittings get in the way. When I put it in the higher of the two connection ports it isnt recognised and I pulled the original wireless card from the lower of the two ports - or at least that's what I believe I did.

Before connecting the wireless card, have a look in device manager & uninstall
anything related to the card, restart computer.
have a look at any instructions on how to install the driver software,
sometimes you have to install the driver/software before connecting the card.
You should be able to connect the card to either of the pci slots by removing the corresponding grid/plate.
make sure the card is fully seated.

I have looked at your pics and can't see why there should be a problem .

You removed the original card and that left an empty slot with the corresponding plate on the case having been removed previously ...you should then insert the replacement card in that same slot ( with the aerial removed to make it easier ) . If you, however, want to use the other slot you need to remove the plate on the case which is opposite that slot ,insert the new card and once that is done replace the aerial on the card and then replace the plate opposite the other slot you used .
