Help needed for a new gaming rig

Hi all. Any help on deciding what to do for a new gaming rig, my current one is ancient and keeps crashing to blacksceen while playing FO4, Assassins Creed Odyssey, Assassins Creed 3.... Im in the process of re-installing everything as it's so slow and like i say, the frustrating crashing to blackscreen needing a hard re-boot. My current rig is

Case - InWIN GT1 BLACK GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU) - Intel® Core™i5 Quad Core Processor i5-4590 (3.3GHz) 6MB Cache
Motherboard - ASUS® H81M-PLUS: Micro-ATX, LG1150, USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs
Memory (RAM) - 8GB KINGSTON DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 8GB)
Graphics Card - 4GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 970 - 1 DVI, 1 mHDMI, 3 mDP - 3D Vision Ready
Hard disk - 1TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD1003FZEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm) (Partitions: 400GB, 600GB)
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive - 24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM
Power Supply - CORSAIR 450W VS SERIES™ VS-450 POWER SUPPLY
Processor Cooling - Super Quiet 22dBA Triple Copper Heatpipe Intel CPU Cooler
Sound Card - ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Wireless/Wired Networking - 10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT (Wi-Fi NOT INCLUDED)
USB Options - MIN. 2 x USB 3.0 & 4 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL + MIN. 2 FRONT PORTS
Operating System - Genuine Windows 8.1 64 Bit - inc DVD & Licence

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I have a budget of 800-1000 and as you'll see i'm not a modern gamer but would like something reasonable quick and able to cope with the Fallout Games being well modded.

Cheers in advance

I think we should be able to come up with something for you. You’ll be able to transfer your Windows license over to your new system, that’ll save you around £100. And you could also potentially move your HDD over too.

What monitor do you have? Make and model or resolution and refresh rate would be handy to know 👍

That'll be great

Its an AOC - 1080p 60htz - Yeah i've got 2 HDD which have stacks of stuff on i don't really want to lose. Like i say the rig is probably just getting old and the latest windows 10 update seems to have knocked everything off

Coolio. I’ve done you a spec that’s fine for your current screen but with built with upgradability in mind. So if you want to go 1440p or 4K in future you can just get a new monitor, the GPU to match it and Bob’s yer uncle.

The CPU is a placeholder, I’d change this to the 5600X which is released on Thursday. It’ll bring the total cost up to £963 👍

Probably a daft question but is it still fairly straightforward to hook up my old Hard Drives or will I need new cables? Also you mentioned about a new monitor... What do suggest. Budget up to 150ish

Should be an easy one to connect up your extra hard drives, PCS also tend to chuck extra cables in your welcome pack.

If you get a new monitor you’ll need a different GPU as I’d specced it with yours in mind. And the cost will potentially bump up considerably...

The 1650 Super that I put in that spec for you is a card that would run your monitor just fine. If you bought a 1080p 144Hz monitor, we’d be looking at the 1660 Super. For a 1440p 144Hz, the upcoming 3060Ti.

We always to try to build with matching the GPU to the monitor, that’s why it’s a question you’ll see asked very often on the forum 🙂👍

I think it might be wise to factor that in. Considering my monitor won an award in 2010 means that would probably be best upgraded too at some point. If you put a better graphics card in based on me upgrading my monitor later, what would it need??
Also - i saw from your link (thanks for that) that it had a "1st M.2 SSD Drive".. What is it? and what is it for?

The M.2 is the next generation of SSD, they’re ridiculously fast. It’d be the one you’d want to put your OS and programs on. You’d probably have room for a currently played game on there too (if you got the 512GB one) and you’d get the benefit of faster loading.

What sort of monitor would you want to upgrade to? 1440p? Ultrawide? 4K?

I hope that's straightforward to do.. As for a monitor, probably still a 1080p but 144hz max. Money permitting in the future may go to 4k but that'll be at 60hz and any thing higher is astronomical.... Oh i also occasionally play and watch via my TV. Sony KDL-W829b. That probably doesnt help

Hi - So i waited till the 5th to update the link you sent and have added extra RAM and changed the graphics card just incase i end up changing my monitor. Few questions. 1) Is it worth it the based on currently only playing a heavily modded Fallout 4, Skyrim and New Vegas in addition to Assassins Creed as i'm fed up of my current rig crashing while gaming. 2) What is the difference in the 1660 TI and the 1650 Super. Again is it worth it...
3) as the cost is about £1170, is this the best rig for the money or is there something else I need to consider. 4) Why AMD over Intel?

Oh and i could find the case you mentioned so picked the one below

Case
CORSAIR 275R AIRFLOW TEMPERED GLASS GAMING CASE

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Six Core CPU (3.7GHz-4.6GHz/35MB CACHE/AM4)

Hiya. So....

1) Extra RAM really isn’t worth it for the games you’re playing. I think the only games that would benefit would be flight simulators.

2) The 1660Ti is a 1080p 144Hz GPU, the 1650 Super is 1080p 60Hz. If you’ve got the budget and you’re definitely getting a 144Hz monitor then yep, worth it (I’d normally recommend the 1660 Super but I think that one is currently out of stock).

3) It’s a top end 1080p gaming rig, you shouldn’t be struggling to run anything with it. It’s also got a bit of future proofing with the motherboard choice and the PSU, it should last you 7-10 years with the right upgrades.

4) Aaaahhh, why AMD over Intel? I’ll link a thread below that gives a pretty comprehensive set of reasons why...

Quick question. My current rig was from Pcspecialist and under 8.1 windows. Obviously windows upgraded to 10 so will my activation key still work if I move my OS to the SSD that you recommend?
Also im currently using 2 hard drives. 1 for OS and a separate one for storage... Will I still be able to have space for these 2 hard drives?
