Help Me Decide - Desktop/Laptop

Hi there,

I’m struggling to decide what to do in regards to keeping my desktop PC or moving over to a laptop exclusively.

My main uses for the desktop are gaming and watching films/TV shows, though I’m going to be starting a coding/programming course soon and so need a new laptop for that. I don’t actually use my PC for gaming that much these days, I just use my PS4/Switch now. I think that’s because I’m not a big fan of sitting at my PC for hours on end, but that may just be because I’m using a rather old and uncomfortable chair which I’ve had for about ten years.

I’m trying to decide whether to keep my current desktop and maybe consider a few upgrades down the line, mainly the GPU, monitor and probably a new desk and more comfortable chair. I could then just aim to purchase a more inexpensive laptop for my course needs. My second option is to sell off my desktop and spend a good chunk of money on a laptop that is capable of running games, should I want to play any PC games in the future.

My desktop specification is as follows:

• Intel i7-4790K CPU (Though I’ve never overclocked this)
• ASRock Z97 Extreme6 Mobo
• NZXT Kraken X61 CPU Cooler
• Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB DDR3 Memory
• EVGA GTX 980 Ti GPU
• Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD
• Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD
• EVGA SuperNova G2 1000W PSU
• NZXT H440 Case
• BenQ XL2420T Monitor

Could I please get some suggestions on what you guys think I should do? As I’m struggling to make my mind up myself. My budget for the laptop would be about £1200, therefore I’d have that amount to spend on desktop upgrades/new furniture and a less expensive laptop.

That's a decent PC, plenty of life left in it yet. Even with the 1440p screen the 980ti must be giving decent fps. If you sell it you'll only recover a fraction of what you laid out for it. I'd get a decent chair (you'll need somewhere comfy to work, even if you switched to a laptop) and use the rest for a new laptop.

Without wishing to be difficult, do please all bear in mind that much as we'd like to help, we're not allowed to give advice on upgrading the OP's existing PC because it's not a PCS build.

@HotRunes I think it's clear that you need a laptop now for your coursework, and you have/use the PS4 for gaming, so personally I would leave the existing PC as is and spec up a new laptop.

As above. Leave the PC as it is, purchase a laptop that suits your needs and look into GeForce Now. This will allow you to stream your games from your powerful PC to the laptop, using the PC graphics to do the work.

It's how I game in relative comfort from my couch on my TV in the living room. Well worth a look IMO.

Agreed - and a fairly inexpensive off-the-shelf laptop would probably be a better fit than any of the specs PCS sell.
