Headphones with a microphone? How do I use them?

Dear Forum

I recently purchased this pc from Very (

PC SPECIALISTCYPHER GTI GAMING PC - GEFORCE GTX 1660, INTEL CORE I5, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, WITH 3-MONTH XBOX GAME PASS FOR PC & NORTON 360 FOR GAMERS)

and I wanted to use my headphones (which have a microphone on them) with the PC.

Unfortunately, I do not know how to do this. There is a separate microphone port on the pc and I have tried this and this does not work either.

Is it possible to use it and how would I do it.

Thank you again in advance

Ozzy

Does it have separate mic and heqdphone jacks? Or is it a mobile headset? Can you post the make and model?

Returing to the OT, will follow this thread. As I think I've got a similar issue with my son's Razer Kraken X Lite.
There are basically 3 types of headset connections:

Standard 3 pole quarter inch jack, this is just simple right channel, left channel and ground (2 bands):

Then the more modern 4 pole quarter inch jack, this is right channel, left channel, microphone and ground (3 bands):

And then what is now more standard for computer headsets is the USB connector.

The older and cheaper headsets will use 2 separate 3 pole connectors, one for the earphones audio, and the second just for the Microphone, these then each go into the relevant output on the soundcard / case which is normally pink for microphone and light green for audio L/R.

Newer headsets, more designed for mobile or console will use the 4 pole connector. Most PC's don't support this, and you either need to use a splitter like this, most multi use headsets will include a splitter for PC use in the package:

But TBH, these days, I would usually say just bit the bullet and splash out on a decent proper PC USB headset, they come with a load of benefits, usually have an onboard soundcard and much higher quality sound (for gaming etc, conference calls etc, not audio listening)
