The story is corroborated by a few other sources but they heavily mention the competitors laptop build which is why I posted this one.

I imagine its going to be the replacement to the GTX 980 mobile edition (not the GTX 980m). The mobile edition was essentially the desktop chip just underclocked. Could see the same here.

Though not all laptop GTX 980s are underclocked, the PCS version has the reference clocks I believe?

The rumour mill was that Pascal would drastically improve the performance of mobile gpu's vs desktop and bring it much closer. I reckon its the 1080m personally, will be interesting to see.

Less than a month, GTX 980 was 18/09/14, GTX 980M was 07/10/14, apparently. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_900_series

The laptop GTX 980 was about a year - 22/09/15

Sorry, read it wrong as usual. Yeah, mobile chipset was released very shortly afterwards.

I reckon those benchmarks are from an Asus test chip of the 1080m

Well they did have desktop grade 980s and I think they were usually underclocked. Think we'd have to see more details about how hot this card gets to see if it would be usable in a laptop without throttling or using a lower default clock speed. Would be awesome if they could get a full 1080 in a laptop that doesn't throttle and isn't the size of a PC. Think a 1070 should definitely be doable though!
