GPU upgrade

currently have an asus rog 2080ti and have just bought the MSI suprim X 3090 and am wondering if I can still just take old one out and replace with new one because they're both nvidia cards or if I need to do anything extra as they're from different manufacturers. Also noted on the MSI card it says it requires an 850w PSU which I have already but does that mean it will be ok for whole PC or do I need more wattage, say a 1000w psu?

No a gpu swap is very simple.
Just turn off the system.
Unplug the power cord from the psu.
Hold the power button for a few seconds.
Open it up.
Unplug the power cables.
Unscrew from the case.
Pull the card out of the motherboard.
Insert new gpu.
Screw to case.
Reattached power cables.
Plug the psu back in and turn on.
Download drivers for the 3090.

Sometimes you’ll get an issue, where you have to completely wipe gpu drivers, before you can install. But i’ve never had that issue.

A 3090 is a big boy, but a psu change is a real pain to do imo. Only a motherboard change is worse

so a 850w would be ok? thats what GPU recommends and the will be enough for whole PC power?

I'd put a 1000 in gives you some headroom for upgrades down the line as GPU's are only going to want more power in the future

I mean... ideally with a 3090, you’d want 1000w plus, but a unless you’ve done a psu change before, it can be a real pain (depending on psu).

Show me a picture of your psu and where all the cables are. If its an RM850 or so, it should be simple, as you just unplug the wires and plug them into the new one. If you need to plug everything back in to the motherboard and drives etc, it can be really annoying.

Its not that bad you just need to be systamatic

Don’t quote me on this, but i’m pretty sure you can just swap the cables between the psu’s and not need to unplug everything. @Martinr36 may be able to tell you more, but i’m relatively confident, that is how it goes with RM850s

ok great ill have a look for a 1000w one. I only put the 850w in around November time when I heard the 3090's were going to be power hungry, didn't realise at the time that 850 wouldn't be enough, that's annoying all the review I read before hand said they would be

I mean... 850 should be enough. Personally i’d see how you get on, but anything over a 3080, i’d say 1000w is the way to go. Also... its a high quality 850w psu, when they say 850w... they are covering ALL 850w and not all psu’s are equals

how would I know if it isn't enough power?
It is definitely enough power, it’s just it may be a bit louder, as it needs to run closer to 100% output. If it wasn’t enough, you’d have some very noticeable issues with your pc.

Taking of GPU power cables... I know the 3080 requires 2x8 pin cables, and from various videos I've watched I get the impression you should you TWO cables, rather than the one with a little pigtail extension.

I got my case other day and plan on putting my OLD 1080 in there for now (8+6 pin requirement) but checking the box. I don't have any proper 8 to 8 pin cables, they are 8 to 6+2 cables.

When I "finally" get my 3080 card, will that actually come with power cables for it as I would like to use the proper cables rather than the pigtail extension ones.

the 6+2 ones will work fine. The GPU won't come with any.

I use extention cables on my 3070 which needed a 6pin and 8pin to make it look neater but its not needed :)
