Get Blue Screen and Error message on startup!

Evening all,

When I start my new PC I occasionally get a blue screen with an error message saying your device encountered a problem and needs to restart. It restarts pretty quickly to be honest. It has now happened about 4-5 times in the last 2 weeks but I thought I would leave it as it might be something that sorts itself out.

Has anyone else had similar problems with their new machine?

What error code do you receive (usually a stop code)?

Yeah I think it is that. Has a little sad face like this :-(

A screenshot of the error code would be a good place to start. Without the specific code, it's just a guessing game.

Take a decent photo of the blue screen next time you get it and post it here.

If there are any files in the folder C:\Windows\Minidumps upload them to the cloud somewhere and post a link to them here.

If there is a file called C:\Windows\Memory.dmp upload that to the cloud and post a link to it here.

This is the Minidumps file.

Memory.dmp is not there.

Yes that's good, thanks. :)

Your error is RAM related. It's a fatal page table error which indicated memory corruption.

It's entirely possible that a RAM card has come a tad loose in transit - it does happen sadly. Pop both RAM cards out and then ensure they're inserted fully home.

If the problem still happens download Memtest, make a bootable USB stick using the downloaded tool, and boot that USB stick. Memtest will start running. Leave it to run all four iterations of the various tests, that will take many hours, so leave it running overnight.

No error message since I took the RAM out and put it back.

Can you upload the dump please? I'll compare it with your previous one, that was caused by a corrupted page table entry, let's see whether this is the same....

In any case it's now time to download Memtest, make a bootable USB stick using the downloaded tool, and boot that USB stick. Memtest will start running. Leave it to run all four iterations of the various tests, that will take many hours, so leave it running overnight. Don't bother with the built in Windows memory diagnostic tool, Memtest is much more thorough.

Also run a chkdsk /f/ x on your SSD and a chkdsk /r /x on your HDD, you'll have to reboot after each one. Check the messages at the end looking for errors found that could not be corrected.

Run sfc /scannow to check your critical system files and check the messages at the end looking for errors found, especially those that could not be corrected.

Let's see what this dump says.... :)

It's identical to your first, a PTE corruption. I guess that could be a Windows problem somehow - though it's hard to imagine how - the sfc /scannow should indicate whether that is likely.

It could be a driver issue, though again it's hard to imagine how but it's worth checking that all your devices have drivers (check for yellow triangles with black exclamation marks in Device Manager) and that you have the latest drivers installed.

My money is still on RAM, despite what Memtest might reveal. If Memtest throws even a single error then that would confirm flaky RAM. If it doesn't generate any errors I would try a fully clean reinstall of Windows as a last desperate gamble and if it BSODs again after that I would contact PCS, point them to this thread and ask nicely whether they would consider swapping your RAM cards.

Thanks Ubuysa for all your time and help.

However, it seems a lot of hassle and a bit of a pain in the back side considering you pay all this money for a PC. I know things can go wrong at any time but it does seem like a lot of PCS computers have issues.

I will give it a little go but if I get stuck I will just speak to PCS and see what they can do.

I will keep you all updated and thanks again.

Just tried setting up the Memtest and sent it straight to my External Hard Drive. Set it up as on the instructions and it wiped the Hard Drive of all my stuff! Cannot believe it!
