Gaming Laptop - Long Term

Hi guys, I'm looking for a bit of advice aa to what my spec looks like for a potential gaming laptop. I will mainly be doing emulation based gaming on this, but will also occasionally use for AAA Online play. I'd love something to be as future proof as possible without killing my bank account (As we all do!). Any comments or tips would be awesome as I have no idea about PC Gaming!

Main questions:

Does it have to be a laptop? The reason I ask is that gaming laptops aren’t really designed with battery life in mind and therefore would need to be plugged in to avoid throttling of capabilities.

Also what is your budget?

Hello :)

It's probably going to need to be a laptop due to space restraints unfortunately, although I'm under no illusion this would really impact performance.

My budget would likely be around £1,000-1300

you could spend a little bit more and get the TB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 1TB Up to 7000MB/sR Up to 6500MB/sW as a BOOT drive, the second one could be for data thus a PCS is perfect.

The trouble is with your budget for a gaming laptop you are not going to get a machine that will be future proofed for up and coming games, other than playing them at reduced detail / low res to make them playable.

Laptop GPUs are not as good as their equivalent 'names' and will perform more like an earlier stepped down version, because of the limitations.

If you dont need the portability of a laptop then you should serious consider finding the space for a desktop.

If you really do have to get a laptop, then you need to make sure you get the best graphics card you can afford now and then consider adding secondary drives, extra RAM later - the GPU is usually soldered to the motherboard on a laptop so there is no room to upgrade that later, whereas you can pop the case off and add RAM or add a second drive.

The only 'future proof' laptop I see on the PCS books at the moment is the Recoil with the 4080/4090 in it BUT to make use of that you would have to pay and have the liquid cooling connecting unit as well - trouble is that is way out of your budget.

Laptops are usually out of date within 18 months to two years - I have had mine 3 years now and decided to buy a desktop - a correctly configured desktop can last you up to about 10 years with the odd upgrade in between and not a full expense again.

Please note this is just my personal opinion / thoughts, but seriously consider what you are spending over £1k on and if you think a 4050 GPU will be good enough in a couple of years time...

100% this, the 4050 mobile card is about 2 tiers under a desktop card, so it's frankly even under a 3060, and doesn't have the base 8Gb VRAM requirement.

it's going to struggle out of the gate even at 1080p without reducing settings. Certainly on modern titles, even reducing settings isn't going to help because the VRAM will be maxed out.

I really wouldn't suggest going anywhere near that low. On a 1440p screen such as that one, the very minimum card you want is a 4070, but even that, that's heavily limiting the lifetime of the laptop as the first bottleneck will always be the GPU and you can't upgrade it.
