nice ben, I love cooking. I'd do it every day if i could. But i simply don't have the time or motivation to work get in at 6pm and start cooking. As for exercise, again I don't have the time. But to be honest, even If I did have the time I wouldnt want to do any strenuous exercise anyway. I used to be into all that fitness stuff, but not any more. Maybe once I finish uni in June i'll try and get back into it. I say that now, but I'm pretty sure I probably wont bother. I'll be too busy gaming :D

The main reason i shifted to quorn was that it was low in fat and high in protein. The Mrs is Vegetarian so it usually ends up to be what im eating. Perhaps i chould just get some chicken and tuna etc and add it to my meals.

I'll give skimmed milk a try, i was drinking and cooking with Soy Milk but i read somewhere it gives men moobs, might be a myth... i hope.

Thanks again guys.
I have to say i dont like quorn much. I gave it a try a couple of times and it doesnt "feel" right, cant explain it. Anyway i see it as an excuse for Vegetarians to eat stuff that looks and tastes like meat which to me i dont quite understand.

If you want to get healthy then even exercising 20 mins a day 3 days a week will do. Couple that with a low carb high protein diet and you'll be fine. If you want to actually lose weight then stick to those points but also reduce your calorie intake to about 1500 a day and you'll see the weight go.

Dunno about soy milk giving you moobs, but excess carbs will. It stimulates insulin production in your body which will then tell it to start storing fat. Good thing you dont drink much alcohol though as that contributes alot to gaining weight (or making it difficult to lose).

Lot's of small meals regularly is better than 3 big ones.

That's a very debatable theory.

There have been a lot of studies over the last few years that show that small meals are better, but there have been just as many studies that show that 3 square meals a day is best because with constant eating throughout the day the body doesn't have time to fully digest the food before being topped up and this can cause issue with people who have a slow metabolism causing stomach issues such as IBS because food is sitting in the stomach for too long.

What seems to be the overall consensus is that everybody is different and you need to do what is right for your own metabolism, some people can handle a constant flow of food, others can't

Whatever you do, don't listen to any dieting expert that is making money from his/her diet, inevitably it is a scam and they will tell you whatever they want you to hear to make you buy their product, these adverts you see where people extoll the virtues of X diet are the worst, yes it worked for those people, but when you factor in that they are a handful of people out of thousands that have tried it, well you see where I'm going....

I agree here, a balanced diet and limit your calorie intake, you can still eat plenty of the things you like, you just have to regulate it. One thing I would add though, is don't reduce your calorie intake too far, there is a lower limit and if you dip below it frequently it can have the opposite effect and you will increase your weight and fat count, basically the body needs a certain amount of calories in comparison with the amount of energy you use, if you are not receiving enough energy your body will go into survival mode and will start storing fat instead of burning it, hence why you see picture of starving children in Africa with huge fat bellies.

Tuna and Chicken are great meats for keeping your fat intake down, however don't disregard red meat at all unless you are using supplements, there are protein, minerals and vitamins in red meat that you need, at least try to eat one piece of red meat a week if you're not taking supplements.

I enjoy porridge too :) I get little pots for breaky, just add hot water. ideal for when I get to work at 8.30

Speaking of tuna, i've got loads in the cupboards. Need to get it used up, but don't fancy tuna n sweetcorn... might have a butchers over at bbcgoodfood. - pretty good site btw.

cook the pasta, 15 mins
15mins!? I have mine on the table in 10. Don't like the texture if I do it for longer.

I don't really agree with low carb diets, I have my raw porridge, pasta and then either potatoes or rice every day and my body fat is 12%.
I also don't agree with limiting calorie intake - don't make yourself hungry because it will make you want to cheat. Instead, just make sure you burn off more calories than you eat.

I will give it a go, if I don't like it negative rep!
Uh oh.. Don't forget the raisins.

What do you mean by red meat? Like Cow meat? I had a baguette at lunch with strips of beef in it for lunch. Is that the kind of thing you mean?

I don't take any supplements at all at the moment. One of the guys at work uses something called grenade tablets he thinks i should try but i kindly declined, im not really a chemicals person, i hate taking pain killers for even a headache.

From the NHS website:
What counts as red and processed meat?

The guidelines refer to red meat and processed red meat.
This definition of red meat includes:
beef
lamb
pork
veal
venison
goat
It does not include:
turkey meat
duck
goose
game birds
chicken
rabbit
Processed meat refers to meat that has been preserved by smoking, curing, salting or adding preservatives. This includes sausages, bacon, ham, salami and pâtés.

There is no need to take supplements. If you started going to the gym regularly and wanted to bulk up then protein shakes can help but if your diet is good then you don't need it.

Awesome thanks Ben, i'm pretty bulky already, i have a big chest and arms but little muscle definition so i feel like there is potential there. I don't have much to loose on my stomach so i was thinking core work with a medicine ball to just top that off.

I used to do 1.5 hours of muscle work 3 times a week for about 6 months 3 or 4 years ago but never maintained it.

Last time i had a BUPA exam they said i should devide that time between 45 minutes cardio and 45 minutes weights etc but i guess just better gym management is required when i return.

Signed up to my local gym again yesterday but its quite intimidating. Despite my size i cant lift a lot and the hardcore gym goer really dont like new people down there but hey i've paid the same as them so i'm going to at least try.

Have you considered a personal trainer? Just give them your aims and they will work out sessions for you and help keep you motivated, only downside is that they aren't cheap.
If that isn't for you, can you get somebody else to train with you to help keep you motivated?
