Gamer Health

Hello everyone.

Im trying to become more health, i used to run and eat well and be quite health, then i got lazy and just game. I would eat rubbish and then slouch over my desk gaming away. No wander i would feel i'll.

A few weekends ago there was a party with Xbox tournament and we had beers and Dominoes pizza. The next two days i was really ill and i gave me a scare. Nothing like to kick you into a health phase than a health scare. Think it might have been a one off IBS spell or something.

Im 30 not a big drinker and wouldn't say i was over weight just unfit.

Following that for the last two months i have not touched crisps or chocolate, i've been getting my 5 a day. The hardest thing has been to give up Fizzy Drinks, i'm actually addicted to them so i haven't even tried a sip of one because i know i will slip up.

My main question is to do with Milk really, i drink a lot of milk along with my 8 cups of water a day but was looking into Soy Milk and Almond Milk and wondered if anyone had any good things to say about it or if it made them ill.

I also switched to Quorn instead of meat but certain Quorn product make me feel a bit ill too. Im not a vegetarian or vegan but there meals seem to be quite health i still have the odd Gamon Roast now and again. Or if im eating out i'll have a good meal then back on the regular diet next day.

Has anyone else been in this situation or currently in this situation? Any advice, recipes or suggested products would be appreciated. My usual cycle of produces can get a bit boring and thats when i know i'll start to slip.

I drink a lot of milk too, but I don't think it's a bad thing - usually at least 2 pints a day.... love the stuff! As for your 5 day - routine really helps. You have to set a bit of time aside to prepare healthy meals. Meat is good - you need some red meat in your diet. Lot's of small meals regularly is better than 3 big ones. Also.... EXERCISE!

Admittedly I'm massively unhealthy. I love nothing more than beers, cheesecake and gaming (the missus is probably in there somewhere too... maybe making the cheesecake). So am probably not one to talk but I do know she (the missus) has started the diet thing with the syns (sic) (slimming world I think it is) now ignoring the 'diet' part, its more for the multitude of healthy recipes it offers. I swear we've not eaten the same home cooked meal twice for over a year now and its excellent! They are all very tasty and obviously there are way more recipes that we just haven't gotten round to also. Might be worth trying some of them.

For a free starter for 10, you could try BBC Good Food, which do healthy menu's might help you get a bit creative with your meals and such.

I bought a Mens Health magazine yesterday and it contains 2 free books - one is a fat burning one and the other is 15 minute meals! It's got tons of recipes in it. Two books and a magazine for £4.50, bargain! Nip to WHSmith and buy it!

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

Preparation is a bit of a pain but last night for example i made a stir fry with noodles veg and a bit of smoked sausage and made so much that i split it into three and take that to work for lunchs. Smoked sausage probably isn't a great choice.

Exercise i'm just getting back into, i walk just under 3 miles in 45 minutes during my lunch and i've just started Zombie Run again on my phone so i did a couple of 75 minute 10k's last week, but i think that might be over doing it to start with.

The mrs thinks im fine but i think she is just being nice but i feel like i should do something. I'm perhaps just being paranoid about my health because of that one weekend but to be honest it hasn't happened again since.

Acidy is probibly a good word for how my stomach was feeling at the time, i do love honey too, might nip to the shops after uni and get some.

Coffee is the worst thing ever, i cant stand the taste or the smell. My Mrs drinks it all the time. I dont know how people can drink that stuff.

There seems to be a major Rivalry between Tea and Coffee, im on the Tea side myself so thats perhaps why i turn my back on coffee :)

Just get skimmed milk and drink away.

However, I would say that as great as your diet may become, it still won't address everything unless you also combine it with regular, sensible exercise.

I'm on a passive diet (ie. I don't try or feel particularly inclined to eat healthily but my wife does so it gets forced upon me most of the time as there's nothing unhealthy in the house ever really). It's vital to eat enough fibre too. And plant sterols for cholesterol will help.

There's absolutely no need to cut out meat. Anyone can be healthy and have a good diet with meat in it. We have loads of types of protease so we've evolved to digest it. Just don't have loads of it. Get extra lean mince. Avoid skin on anything. etc. All that sort of general sensible stuff.

If I was forced to go crazily healthy I'd get bored and annoyed. Being sensible and consistent is the important thing. And not varying your meal times massively. Everyone's hormones stick rigidly to a 24 hour circadian rhythm and can fluctuate wildly. This is for all hormones... including the ones that affect hunger, digestion and absorption. So keep your meal times in a rigid 24 hour rhythm.

no coffee keynes? I don't think me or jackattack would be alive without caffeine!

I don't drink tea or coffee...noone at work can work out how i get through the day :) (psst, top secret...I just do nothing, seems to help)

At Smoke...noooooooooo don't fall into the Quorn trap! Meat is good for you! Don't listen to the ebil veggies! :)

I think the biggest thing is exercise. I am not saying that you can eat anything you like, but with a decent amount of exercise, a lot of the dietary issues that are often banded about aren't really an issue.

Basically, what I am trying to say is, COME ON SCIENCE, GET ON WITH FULL VR ALREADY! THE ENTERPRISE HAD IT 25 YEARS AGO!

:)

What is this travesty? Why would you pay extra for white water?! :)

Had a housemate at uni that drank skimmed milk, caffeine free diet coke...and water. So basically 3 different types of water :)

I think a lot of the stigma is that 'healthy food isn't very tasty', when actually it couldn't be further from that. As SlimCini pointed out - it's about making sensible choices. Lean meat, cutting the fat off your bacon, semi-skimmed/skimmed milk, not putting salt on everything etc and combining all that with a bit of exercise. It doesn't have to be excessive - just go for a few walks every day or so.

It doesn't have to take ages to make either - occasionally I'll just make pasta and whack some tuna and sweetcorn in there. You can add mayo - so long as it's light! I make a little extra for lunch the next day - it takes literally 20 mins to make.

The main reason i shifted to quorn was that it was low in fat and high in protein. The Mrs is Vegetarian so it usually ends up to be what im eating. Perhaps i chould just get some chicken and tuna etc and add it to my meals.

I'll give skimmed milk a try, i was drinking and cooking with Soy Milk but i read somewhere it gives men moobs, might be a myth... i hope.

Thanks again guys.

I can't taste the difference using skimmed milk in tea, cereal etc... but then I don't drink it neat so that may probably give you a noticeable difference. Tesco do a 'half skimmed' version of milk that is between skimmed and semi-skimmed. So semi-semi-skimmed in a way. It's got an orange label. I get that if I go shopping... the wife gets red if she goes shopping. If you don't like drinking skimmed neat then give the orange stuff a go.

Skimmed milk tastes like water, whole milk tastes viscous-y and semi-skimmed milk is just right :)

I remember when I was really small, my mum sometimes used to forget to make custard when she made a crumble. So she'd get the milk out the fridge and inform us that 'having milk on your pudding is just the same as having custard'. Crumble and milk.... urgh. It was only a bit later in life I realised this was just a demented combo! However... will clearly remember that trick for when I have kids...

It takes you 20 mins to make pasta with sweetcorn and tuna!?

Go for orange top milk (1% fat) - skimmed tastes vile
Try not to eat too much bread
Proper breakfast, ideally porridge or eggs (I hate cooked porridge so eat the oats raw with raisins and either berries or other dried fruit - basically homemade muesli)
Try not to eat processed foods as they tend to have salt and sugar added to them.
Smaller meals but HEALTHY snacks in between - have a banana or a wrap with peanut butter to keep you going. This will keep your metabolism working throughout the day.

I made a really good bolognese on Sunday:
800g EXTRA LEAN mince pork (<5% fat)
3 rashers smoked bacon (cut the fat off)
3 carrots
mushrooms
garlic
3 sticks celery
3 onions
3 tins tomatoes

Really easy to cook, basically just chuck the bacon in a pan, brown it off, chuck the veg in then stir in the mince. Let in cook for a couple of hours on low - med heat. Went 6 ways, couple in the fridge, rest went in the freezer.

I know some people who take pictures of ALL the food that they eat, that way they think twice about eating it.
