G-SYNC question - AMD or NVIDIA?

HI all

With my old system I7-4470 / GTX 1080 I had this monitor (new a couple of years ago) -- ASUS ROG PG279Q (2560x1440), but that PC died last november, so I bought a new one -- initial specs below (but had some better tweaks since then, e.g. 2 x M.2 drives due to recommendations here).

Due to stock levels etc. I decided to NOT buy the GPU 3080 card and stick my original 1080 -- so a major bottle neck at the moment. I've always been a NVidia guy but was wondering what I should do (happy to wait longer if needs be)?

1. Cave in and get a AMD 6800XT - they appear to have stock of these??? (I doubt this will work with GSYNC as that is nvidia only I believe). Will gsync even be needed with this spec of a PC?

2. Wait longer - for 3080 stock, or the new 3080ti in a few months time. I've waited this long what's a few more months,

Drivers. reason I'm asking is I heard that the AMD drivers are really bad, my friend is all AMD and he seems to constantly have BSOD (though he does OC them). I never bother with OC, don't personally see the point, just buy a better card. I'm not one for having 300 FPS, but I do like games on ULTRA levels of graphics etc.

That screen is gsync so would work with adaptive refresh with an AMD card, it would likely cause screen tearing.

But you don’t need the 3080 for that screen, it’s overpowered, a 3070 would be more than enough.

However, the 3070 isn't due back in stock till May according to the configurator...no clue what is happening with 3080 stocks though
My guess is PCS have given a worst case scenario there, I would fully expect them to be back sooner, perhaps end of March as NVidia have suggested as a worst case, but yeah, everything is an unknown atm.

Seems reasonable enough. Of course, to order a system with a 3070 you either need to wait until possibly the end of March to order (given the 3070 is greyed out on the config), spend an extra £150 to get the Strix 3070 (which is only £14 less than the standard 3080!) or order with the 3080 and hope the 3070 comes back in before build.
Or see if you can source a 3070 somewhere else and order without a graphics card

OK thanks all. I'm hoping the system lasts me 5+ years so in 5 years time I might have a different / better monitor so hence thinking about the 3080 at this time. I was asking about the AMD simply because that option is available in the UPGRADE panel on PCS, but of course the 30xx are not.

I'm currently getting about 60-70 fps from AC: Valhalla on ultra settings (with 80% upscaling though :( ) - so for the time being I think I'll just wait a few more months.

Buying a 3080 now for a monitor you might have in 5 years is not the best use of your money. By then there will have been several more GPU releases, most likely providing more processing power for your money.

+ they will offer new technologies.

never spec the gpu for the long term, spec it to your existing monitor and then upgrade it when you’re looking for a better experience as you’ll pay less for equivalent performance and better features.
