First PC (Photo Editing and Gaming)

Hello,

Been looking to get a PC for several years now but soldiered on with the laptop until this Christmas when funds have allowed a bit more of an update. Currently running a Windows Laptop with a GTX960m and i7-6700HQ and looking for something of an upgrade.

  • 1) Your budget - £1,500 for the PC will look at a monitor separately (currently have a 144Hz Pixio PX247 24inch screen which will do for the time being but looking for a 1440p at some point)
  • 2) What's the PC / Laptop for (gaming, workstation, heavy VM use, etc.) - General gaming (Warzone, factorio, Civ, Rimworld etc but would like to get into more things like Resident Evil, Elden Ring etc to replace the PS4/PS5)...on top of this I also need it for astrophotography which can involve the stacking of many, many, many large files together and then process the end result in PixInsight which has some pretty hefty minimum specs (laptop just about handles it but some of the scripts take a Looooong time).
  • 3) What monitor will you be using (especially important for gaming) - See above, will look into a 1440p monitor at some point, not interested in going much higher than that for some time.
I've mainly been looking at an AMD build...did drift into AM5 territory but frankly scope creep just pushed it up too much. In the end I came up with the below specification (Link is here)

I am not an AMD only person but have read more on them then the intel lineup so just went with it but if there is more bang for your buck elsewhere I am open to suggestions.

I have never really had to spec a PC before (just got a decent mid-range laptop due to moving around all the time) so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Having a little look at this and trying to up the processor for the astro side of things and have the following. It wont let me chose a motherboard without USBC for some reason which would almost bring it back in and I have dropped the power supply down a notch as well.

Hi there, happy new year!
Sorry this has slipped through the cracks.
Can’t quite get it down to £1500 without sacrificing a few areas, but this is as close as I could get. You underspecced the PSU and cooler which are both very important and often overlooked components. Adding in a more appropriate pairing has pushed the price up a little.

Worth noting on this that second m.2 drive is limited to gen 3 speeds, but seeing as it’s cheaper than the equivalent 970 I kept it in.

Thanks for that, would the 3060ti be sufficient for some 1440p work? Looking at some benchmarks it seems it should be but always worth an ask.

Also thank you for the Intel build suggestion as well but again getting into the forever scope creep territory.

I had thought coolers were less of an issue on the AMD components but maybe that was for the lower tiered processors....all in all it would hopefully be a big step up from my laptop in gaming and editing for the foreseeable and give me an upgrade path GPU wise for some time, hopefully:)

Yep, the 3060ti is a really solid 1440p gaming card, and is also decent for productivity work without breaking the bank.
You can definitely go for a less powerful (and expensive) cooler on the lower tier CPUs. The cooler you selected would be a good pairing with the Ryzen 5600 for example, and indeed if you were only using the PC for gaming that would have been the CPU I would have recommended. But with your workstation and astrophotography needs that warrants a stronger CPU, which comes with additional cooling requirements.

For the sake of £20, you could consider opting for a 1000W PSU. This gives you some extra headroom which will be helpful down the line when you’re thinking about a GPU upgrade. We’ve seen a big creep in power requirements in the recent release of GPUs, and while hopefully power requirements don’t keep rising, this means that you won’t need to buy a new PSU and rewire your whole PC if you want to upgrade to a new GPU a few years down the line.
