Fans uncontrollable

Hi all, at the suggestion of Spyder I'm making a "please help" thread.

My new build arrived yesterday and aside from a few confusing build choices I love it. The big issue at the moment is the fans.

The case is a 5000D Airflow and I emailed PCSpecialist and asked if the 5 additional fans could be upped to 7 so the stock fans are replaced with the RGB fans on offer at PCS. The case has 3 front fans, 3 side fans, 1 rear fan and then 3 fans as part of the AIO mounted on the top of the case. I am unable to control the speed of the fans not part of the AIO cooler. As soon as the system comes on they ramp up to 100% and stay there.

As they are connected to a lightning node and not a commander core, iCue can only control their LEDs and has no control over their fan speed. I have an ASUS motherboard so Armory Crate was suggested, but it only identifies one "CPU fan" (actually the rear exhaust) and 4 "chassis fans," as well as the cooler. When using auto-tune to try and set up an automatic fan curve based on CPU/GPU temps only the rear exhaust will actually be "tuned" and the rest of the case fans just stay at 100% and end up greyed out. I eventually tried to use the QFan control from the bios but no matter how I modify it the fans take no notice. I'm fully up to date with windows and Armory Crate and did full windows reinstall a few hours ago with no luck.

Doesn’t the 5000D come with a PWM repeater/header? I would have thought that the AIO fans are plugged into Commander Core, which is connected into the CPU fan header and usb header, the front and side connected to PWM repeater which is plugged into the CPU Opt header and the rear fan plugged into Chassis 1 header. You would then set a curve for CPU Fan and Chassis 1 in the bios (CPU opt just mirrors what CPU fan and core commander ignores any PWM signal from cpu fan and controls via usb header)

Thinking about this further, you could plug all fans to core to control them via iCUE I think. Three aio fans and rear connect directly, then the front and side fans to to the PWM repeater and then into core.

I’m sure someone actually with a Corsair case will be able to confirm or contradict my assumption.

I've got the 220 case with three front (Corsair) and one cheapo as a rear fan. I control mine through the bios, cos I think that there Armoury Crate to be coded by Satan and his little imps. The trick for me was to use the 'optimise fans' option, mine's now whisper quiet.

Hi all thanks for the responses. I delved back into the bios and played around with the fans and as it turns out all the case fans are tied to the "Wpump+" entry, so modifying that fan curve allowed me to slow the fans down in a way that persists through reboots (No idea why there are 4 chassis fan entries that do nothing). Although all the fans do now ramp up to 100 for a few seconds when the PC comes on. Haven't taxed the system yet but will see if the fans respond to temp changes at all.

There are entries for "AIO Pump" and "W_Pump+" and only changing w_pump affected the case fans. I've not moved anything around in the case. Worth ringing them tomorrow?

Looking at manual for your motherboard you can see the pump headers only run at full speed:

Might be worth confirming the fan cable is actually connected to that header. If you’re saying you were able to change their speed, then they might be connected to some other header

Oh oof ok. I wouldn't know how to check. The only way I was able to modify their speed was by using QFan in the bios to set the W_PUMP+ to manual and then dragging everything down. So I guess I've also slowed my pump down. No other entry allowed me to control the fans outside of the rear fan which seems to be connected as the CPU fan and the AIO fans which are controllable through icue.

Just look through the glass panel and see what’s plugged where. You can use the diagram on page 1-3 of your manual to figure out what’s what. But if you’re not sure, def give PCS a call tomorrow to confirm setup.

I would suggest that if they are all plugged in to the AIO socket (top right) then that's wrong. The fans would be better plugged in to the four pin headers (bottom). I would put the three Corsair front fans in one and the rear fan in another. Oh I wish I had a pic of your mobo!

Case fans should never be connected to pump header. That’s designed to run at 100% all the time. That’s bad building by PCS if that’s how it was built.
It is, and it's also not the first time I think I've seen it mentioned on this forum. I would want to connect the repeater to one of the chassis headers, and then it should work perfectly. Very unfortunate that that wasn't done.

Chibble, if indeed that’s your real name 😂, I’d either return PC to PCS and request them to correctly cable, or do it yourself if you feel capable.

Ah man what a nightmare. I wouldn't even know where to start with doing it myself so I guess I have to return it to PCS. Amazed it got through testing and QC like this.

Hi all thanks for the help so far, I've had a look and it does seem like there's something plugged into the wpump but but nothing in any of the chassis fan parts. Is anyone able to confirm?
Yes, that's what I see there too.

It's a very simple fix: the plug that goes into W_PUMP+ on the right hand side needs to be plugged into any of the CHA_FAN headers. Depending on how tightly it's cable-managed, this might be a really easy fix, but if it's been done very neatly and securely it may be tricky. I'd call them up if I were you.

It's a really simple fix, but I can totally understand being nervous about trying it! If you do try it, you must turn the PC off at the power supply/unplug it from the wall before moving plugs around inside.

If he has commander, he did mention somewhere he had the lighting node, if so that only does the fairy lights, not the whirly whirly.
