Yes, it will be like that until you correct it, there's no point just sitting with it and moaning, you need to address it, so raise a thread and troubleshoot.
I see. Thing is, I'm not that knowledgeable. After spending this much on a laptop, the last thing I expected to need to do is download various software, look into various settings, tweak this and that, spend all time on forums, emails to PCS etc.
I could just return it, but it took a lot of time to transfer everything over.
I can get CPU use down to 1%, and the fan still runs.
If it stops, you only need to move the mouse and scroll a page for it to start again.
Something I just noticed, although on task manager it shows GPU in use, on the Game Centre app it shows 0% - is that anything important ?

You should have 2 GPUs on task manager (dedicated and integrated), but I believe that control center only tracks the dedicated one (@Martinr36 please correct me if I'm wrong, as I don't have an integrated GPU and not sure what the behaviour is exactly).

If that is indeed correct, then you'll have the dedicated as 0% utilization when you're not gaming or rendering photo/video.

yes the control center only monitors the dedicated GPU

CPU use seems not too bad to me, it can vary from 1 to 20 (ish) % with few basic programs open. However the fan does not stop.

Am I wrong in thinking these machines get individually bench-tested before being shipped out ? This personal service was one of the reasons that drew me to PCS.
The boss gives me funny looks, as I persuaded her to spend 50% more than we have in the past.

So the saga of this laptop continues.
We had an external monitor connected no problem via hdmi.
Today we connected a 2nd monitor via display port. All seemed fine initially, 3 screens- lovely !
I then put the laptop to sleep for about 10 mins - turning it back on, every program and work that was open was gone, some random windows restart had obviously happened.
Now, I cannot get any monitor via any port to be recognised.

Really not having much joy with this £1500 machine.

What resolution are the screens you’re attaching?

Any GPU has a max resolution that’s it’s capable of.

But given the history you’ve faced, I would suggest a clean install of windows, sounds like something isn’t configured correctly.

Don't know resolution - they're just bog standard 24" monitors that work fine with other pc's we have.
They don't even show up in settings to 'detect'.

I am not tech savvy really, certainly not enough to wipe and re-install windows.
Just very annoyed, as this was a big decision to buy from PCS, but i liked option to chose all components and reassured that it would be bench tested.

We don't have time to constantly run through settings and fault find.
The fan can often be heard in the next room !

It's a custom built machine. You need to find time and want to learn, and reinstall Windows. If you'll decide to accept help, we will be able to give some advices of how to do that as with Windows 10 is so simple that even not tech savvy person should be able to do that quite easily. I understand first time it may look spooky, but either way OS needs to be reinstalled every few years as a basic hygiene.

To reinforce the point @Citrus_9 just made, this how to a complete clean install of W10:

Download a new copy of Windows using the Media Creation Tool to an 8GB (min) USB.
Boot that USB and choose a Custom Install.
Delete all UEFI partitions on the system drive (EFI System, Recovery, MSR Reserved, Primary).
Select the unallocated space that results and click the Next button. The installer will create the correct partitions and install Windows.
Run Windows Update repeatedly, even across reboots, until no more updates are found.
You may need/want to download and install the latest graphics driver from the Nvidia/AMD website (they change so regularly the latest version isn't always in the Windows libraries).

so, another evening seemingly wasted.. this is great - you guys have time for this ?

So device manager said windows has disabled my graphics card.
So went through BIG windows update. No luck.
Went through all update/replace graphics card driver. And, still the same...

I do appreciate your help guys, but we are trying to run a business - what a waste of time.
So now we have a fan that seems about to take off, and no external monitors ! Awesome.

PCS answer ? As it's a business purchase no refund available ! Damn - I'll see if I can try that in my business, wonder how long we'll last.

As we've advised since January, you need to do a clean windows installation.

What you've bought is a custom gaming laptop, it's not the same as an off the shelf from dell or somewhere, you will regularly have to clean install windows, you will have to take it apart to clean it and repaste it once a year or so.

It just goes with the territory of having any custom build, you WILL need to learn how to troubleshoot and configure windows and maintain hardware.

Well, I never heard something like that before.
My existing laptop is a gaming laptop, albeit an off-the-shelf- one from a major brand.
I've never used it for games (never had the intention to). It is over 6 yrs old and never done a full wipe/re-install once.

I do appreciate the help/comments from everyone.

We have now discovered that the main ssd with the OS is no longer recognised (damaged ?), and it will not boot at all.

Have never heard of a company who doesn't do refunds if it's a 'business' purchase ? Why should that matter. We now have to pay £35 to return it, on top of nearly a week I would say of cumulative lost productivity.

Rant over. Cheers.

It's entirely possible that the flaky SSD has been the cause of all your issues. Even the most complex set of issues usually has a single root cause.

You could try removing and reinserting the SSD, sometimes that helps. It's also worth checking to see whether the BIOS recognises the SSD.

The SSD failure might actually be good news. Permanent failures are much easier to deal with than intermittent ones. :)

It's been sent back, will keep you posted.

Boss has gone back to her 4 yr old Acer, which runs just as well and quieter than the one we've returned.

Update - the laptop was returned. The Samsung SSD had failed, so was replaced.

I am scared to attach more than 1 monitor now, even though it has 3 output ports.

The fans continue - you can have 1 tab of a browser open, nothing else, and the fans will go into hyperdrive. Last week while travelling, in the middle of the night the fans began full throttle and woke me up - the laptop was in the next room ! haha.

Something I'd never considered in the past - the font of the keyboard keys, as this looks like designed for a child.

Have you done a repaste? Have you checked you temps as advised multiple times now?

It's not just going to magically fix itself, you will have to run regular maintenance on it.

Have you checked the running processes in Task Manager?

Have you checked your fan curve settings?

I've merged your threads together so we can see the history as it's all around the same thing.

I'd strongly recommend having a read over from start to finish and investigating some of the things that have been suggested.

How did you get on with this ? We have similar issues. Trawling through this forum, it seems machines can easily come out of PCS riddled with issues.
I, for one, regret this purchase.
