We have a new Optimus Pro 15" laptop, and the fan is almost constantly running, even when it's hardly doing any work.
Gaming centre is installed set to 'office' and 'quiet'.
Is this normal ?

We have 2 other older gaming spec laptops in the office, and their fans, although noisier, run far less.

Thanks

Check the GamingCenter/ControlCenter program and click on the profiles for each of Office / Gaming and Turbo modes - check to see if this button is present and clicked on any of them:

Deselect it if it is and see if that helps.

Another thing to check is waht is selected in this screen:

Try just selecting fans quiet.

Would also suggest insalling HWMonitor to check the temperatures of the CPU / GPU as well.

If you are indeed in office and quiet, then it might be some process constantly running on the background. I would look into the task manager and check CPU utilisation % and what are the resources consuming it the most. It should be around 2-3% on idle.

Have set all the necessary steps with GameCentre. It's not that the fan is noisy, its just why is it on almost all the time ?
CPU will be low for a minute or 2 at most, then blast into life (with just a few basic applications open) with 15+% - with the main culprit seemingly (what i can tell so far) being 'system'.
The fan can be on, and just opening a photo causes CPU use to shoot up and the fan to accelerate.

I had thought that a machine 5 years newer than our other 2 would breeze through this stuff.
I only have to open a new webpage, and CPU + GPU use shoots up (albeit briefly). Our other 2 machines under basic use hardly run their fans, only when put under a heavier task.

What temperatures are you seeing on HWMonitor?

What browser are you using?

With time, laptops become more powerful, consuming more power and consequently producing more heat. Expect it to get worst with time (looking at you, RTX 3000 mobile), not better. My 4-year-old gaming laptop had a CPU with 45W TDP and GPU with 75W, while my current one has a CPU with 65W and GPU with 115W. So it is indeed noisier, however that is the trade-off for being 5x faster.

But I agree with you that it cannot be noisy all the time, so that is why @andjef796 was talking about control center. It is the way you have to reduce the TDP of your CPU by using those profiles and that should be enough to make your fans not that noisy. You can also play with the custom fan profile in control center, but keep an eye on the temperatures as well.

To have a laptop with absolutely no noise (or less noise than old laptops), you would need to have an ultrabook (or similar) with only an integrated GPU and a 15W CPU. Most of those won't even need a fan to cool down, or would have a very small and quiet one. But as you know, they will also not be suitable for gaming.

Thanks again.
All settings on Gaming Centre are correct.
We use a combination of Chrome/Edge - although i understand chrome is more memory sucking.
With a few applications open (excel, word, chrome, outlook etc) CPU use is 3-6%, but the fan is constantly on pretty much.

We don't do gaming, we have the spec for 3D rendering/architecture software.

Did you order the laptop with or without windows?

I do feel your pain. I have tried a bunch of things to try and enjoy some quiet, basic web browsing, checking emails, looking through photos - or even just changing settings in Windows - but the level of the fans just becomes too intrusive and annoys anyone around me - "why's your laptop making all the sound". (I have a different laptop to you but it's the same story). I don't even want to use my laptop, it's that irritating...but there's more than just the fans...but that's another story....

Anyway...
When I've had to use my laptop, I actually now use Throttlestop to undervolt the CPU and disable boost - setting it to boot into Windows with these settings. It helps a bit. I followed a YouTube tutorial so don't ask me to repeat the steps 😅.

The custom fan curves on control center (or gaming center) didn't work? That together with changing its profile to quiet mode is the easiest way to lower the noise.

It suggests that windows isn't configured correctly. My guess is the OP ordered without windows and hasn't got it quite setup.

Same to @BigRed

Very likely... once you get the control center installed and working, it's so easy to control the noise. I don't get why so many people have the same issue.

I would love to know what this extra Windows configuration is? Anyone?

If you bought your laptop with windows installed, then you will have the control center (or gaming center, it's either one or the other) already installed. If not, login into your account on PCS' main website, go to the downloads section and there you will find the files to install the control / gaming center.

In my case, it's called "06_ControlCenter_W10.zip" , but it can be slightly different on yours. Once you have the tool installed and running, you can switch between the different power profiles, "quiet" (also sometimes called "office") being the one that will make your laptop run.... well, quieter. If that is still not quiet enough (I doubt it), you can go to the fan control part of the tool and create your custom fan curve, according to your needs.

Just keep in mind that whenever you need more processing power (like gaming, editing, etc), you will need to change the profile to entertainment (or gaming) mode, as quiet/office will make your CPU a bit slower, but still powerful enough for most daily normal tasks (browsing, streaming, music).

I'm not savvy enough to install windows myself, it came from PCS already installed and benchtested/run.
As I've said before, have configured it appropraietly in Game Centre to as quiet as possible (office mode, boost off, quiet mode on) etc... but to be fair its not the noise as such, but the fact it's on almost all the time.

We have 2 older pc's in the office in use. Both are gaming spec machines for their time. Their fans are noisier, but come on now and then, and not for long.
Like you BigRed, people just look at me and say 'why is your fan on all the time ?', even though it's a better spec than many.
We always associated fans being on that it's struggling - the reason we bought a new one in the first place !

PCS have assured me this is perfectly normal. I'm not sure. When we turn it off it's like a relief.

The fans shouldn't be on all the time or certainly not to the point where it's distracting, if they are it's because there's an issue:

1/. There's a process running in the background that's using CPU constantly. Check taskmanager to see if CPU usage is high and what process is using it

2/. It's a paste issue and needs reapplying. This can happen during build time, sometimes they apply it badly. It's just one of those things.

3/. Windows isn't configured correctly, but since you ordered with windows, I would leave that as a last resort.

I have similar problem. Laptop is a few months old. We have not tried PCS before, and this is the most we've ever spent on a laptop.
The fan, although not particularly loud, is on pretty much all the time. You can leave it with a couple of basic programs open, and the fan will go up and down in speed and noise constantly.
With a web page open, it will slow down, but then as soon as you scroll down the page the fan increases. Our older less spec machines don't do this.
In a quiet office, when on the phone, this fan sometimes going crazy, can be ditracting.
People ask 'why is your fan on all the time?'.
PCS have assured me this is normal - I'm not convinced.

I check task manager (I'm no expert), and numbers seem about same as our other pc's. There is a huge list of tasks/programs open, but seems no more than our other laptops.
All settings in game centre are correct.

As I sit here in the office now, again with 3 laptops on, all running similar basic tasks, only the new more powerful one has the fan constantly on.

Could you paste a screen of the "processes" tab in the task manager? Both on typical load and with all software closed. The CPU usage shouldn't be more than 2-3% on idle.

Yes, it will be like that until you correct it, there's no point just sitting with it and moaning, you need to address it, so raise a thread and troubleshoot.
