Drive Configurations on a new build.....

@Bigfoot There's also the money you would save if you stepped down to the 5800x...dropping the CPU down as well as the motherboard (assuming you had selected the Strix 570) down to the TUF 570 would save you nearly £400
That is something else I am considering. There doesn’t seem to be more than about 7% difference between the CPUs in the Puget benchmarks and in some applications the 5800x wins. However, if I am launching PS from LR or using plug ins the extra cores may provide an extra boost. All the benchmarks obviously just consider a single application running.

Your workflow really defines what you need doesn't it. I agree that it is a little unfortunate that all benchmarks look at single applications, but I can totally understand why of course.

I am a bit of a purist perhaps in that I try to do only minor editing and balancing in LR for almost all my photos. Cropping is usually my most serious edit. For photoshop I am almost always opening it separately after I have finished working with LR and that's usually for stitching or layering images. So I avoid having both applications open at the same time in general. I imagine the performance impact would be fairly notable with them both on the go......

....just wondering though - if you are not actively using LR when you launch PS - as in you are not applying something within LR - then RAM would be your most important issue with both open? LR sitting quietly shouldn't stress your system too much I wouldn't have thought. As long as you have the RAM to handle both open with one active, you should be OK?

Or do you have a different flow??

Currently, I edit mainly in LR as my PC won’t really handle PS. I suspect I will still mainly use LR and use PS and / or Topaz plug ins for specific photos that need more attention. For example, I have some shots on safari in very low light, max iso, low shutter speed and difficult to repeat without a lot of expense. I captured them as well as I could in camera, but they need a bit more work. I have leopards in near darkness and male lions and painted dogs captured post sunset.

You may well be right that memory is more important than cores. I don’t really have a positive experience of anything other than just editing in LR on my current PC, so it is difficult to judge.

That is the trouble with long build times- plenty of time to think and fiddle with the build.

Yes if it was built the day you ordered it none of this would matter!! :):)

How much RAM have you opted for?

I have 32GB of 3200MHz RAM (2x16GB). I kept away from 3600MHz in case I wanted to up it to 64MB in the future due to the reports of instability with 4 sticks at the higher speed.

I just had a look again to confirm on my system - LR keeps about 4-6 GB of RAM in use when idle. PS adds a lesser but not dissimilar amount when idle also.

The most I have seen anyone say their system used when intensively using either program was around 18-20 GB. Which is why I think 32 GB is a good number and also why 16GB really just isn't enough. In theory if you were using one and having the other open but idle the highest RAM requirement you would see would be 24-26GB or so - leaving plenty for background OS tasks. So I would say your RAM will be perfect for one in use and the other open but not working too hard.

The CPU cores question is a little different - if you think you might want to be intensively using one program while the other is running something - like working in PS while importing and converting in LR then I would be inclined to say more cores would be better. But at the same time, neither program seems to have all that signfiicant a boost beyond 4 cores anyway - in which case the 5800 and your 32GB of RAM should work.

It's a tough one to be sure of. I'll keep digging around anyway and report back if I can find anything else out for you......

If you're using an AMD CPU you should know that a couple of people have had issues with 4 x 3200MHz RAM as well.....
Good to know Ubuysa! I’ve actually gone with 3000MHz on my own build.

It’ll be interesting to see if the root cause can be identified of all these issues....

Working theory in some cases is that it's BIOS related, I believe one user has a ROG Strix X570 motherboard with a very recent update and is reporting no instability at 4x8GB 3600MHz. A concrete answer would be most welcome!

Agreed AgentC! In my own industry it does sometimes amaze me how long it can take for an offending bit of code to be found in some firmware or software. Fingers crossed an explanation and solution will roll out for this one soon.

My order dispatched this morning. Bigfoot - if your machine hasn’t started it’s build by the time mine arrives, I will run a few tests with PS & LR together and see how the 5600X performance is impacted with it’s 6 cores. Might help you in your decision making.

Sadly, I forgot to ask PCS to install a webcam and leave it powered on through a little cut out in the box. I was looking forward to some holiday snaps. 😢

“And this one is from when my PC travelled by road across Lithuania for no good reason. See the smoke from the FedEx truck?”

I have a 5900x on a ROG Strix X570 with 2x16GB @ 3200MHz RAM in my order. It appears that there could be problems with 4 sticks at this speed. As I see it, I shouldn’t have a problem at the moment, but could have if I upgraded to 64MB at a later date that might require a BIOS update to fix, whether I select 3200 or 3600 RAM. Perhaps I should just change to the faster version?

I’m in Scotland, so it will be snowing, raining or about to do one of those.
Well today in Derry I woke up to frost and sunshine, by the time I got to work it was cloudy and gale blowing. Then by morning tea it was raining really heavy and about 30minutes ago we had a shower of hail with more rain right now. So I'd say snow by dinner time and then maybe a heatwave for supper.

I imagine it's the same your way only with more rain

I imagine in my head that our forecasters have a cheat sheet for their daily announcements - with bits they are supposed to delete as appropriate. Something like this:

Today it shall be Sunny/Partly Cloudy/Cloudy/Dull/Like Night. There is also a chance of some Sun/Drizzle/Rain/Heavy Rain/Hail/Sleet/Snow/Cats/Dogs. Visibility will be Good/Moderate/Poor/Non-existent in Clear Air/Mist/Fog. It will also be Flat Calm/Breezy/Windy/Gale Force/Flying Humans.

But sadly in Ireland they don't have sharpies handy to delete anything (due to a FedEx supply issue probably  ) and so the whole thing gets read out instead.

The weather then has no choice but to comply with the forecast.

We did have about 40cm of snow and temperatures well below freezing during the day and -14 at night. We have had a bit of rain and it is getting warmer, so the snow is now starting to melt. We have had snow in the garden continuously since December 24th.

I will be interested to hear your results with LR and PS
