(I have a 4090 at home to add to it).

I've paid for it but any suggestions welcome as I know I have a certain amount of time to change it.

What is the system for? Just gaming? What monitor is it being paired with?

I would personally be holding off for an AMD build (7000 Series 3D Cache chips). It depends on the games but I think the 5800X3D offers better value than the i9,

I definitely wouldn't have gone with a Z790 build. They are over priced and you've had to go for a very low tier board with high end hardware considered. It's definitely not the way I would have done it all.

Just changing things around in the configurator you've chosen I would be more inclined to go in this direction. If it's just for gaming/streaming I think the 13900k is massive overkill.

Hi Scott, thanks for the feedback. Yes it's just for gaming, well VR gaming to be precise which is very demanding, that's why I've gone for this spec. So the mobo I selected is rather poor? I chose that because I currently have an Asus Prime Z270-P which has served me well these past 6 years but yes I will heed your advice and change the mobo, thanks. Only slight downer is the Z690 supports slightly slower memory (6400 vs 7000).

About waiting for X3D, I did consider this but tbh I don't want to wait lol :D plus you can play the waiting game forever, there's always something better around the corner. I bet Intel 14th gen. will be better again, why not wait for that? Plus I like the sound of 6GHz :D, the 7800X3D at 5GHz just doesn't appeal as much. I know the X3D's may well be better for gaming but they seem to shine at 1080p afaik, I game at much higher resolutions than that, in excess of 4K usually.

Edit: I'm going to go for the mobo you suggest but the Z790 version, reason being it's not much dearer and it supports upto 7800 MHz ram (I will upgrade the RAM and GPU at some point). I don't mind spending this much, my last PC has lasted me 6 years and I expect this new 1 to last that long too, apart from RAM and GPU upgrades.

The Prime tier is Asus's lowest tier. It's fine, but nothing spectacular. For a top-end processor, you want a better motherboard.

Well, that's not the right way to look at it, I'm afraid. GHz means nothing for gaming, because what happens on a tick of the clock isn't the same. The only sensible thing to compare is the result: FPS counts, or suchlike.

The X3D chips are best at 1080p because that's where the CPU makes most difference, and they're the best CPUs for gaming. At 4K, the CPU makes increasingly little difference as the graphics card is the main differentiator there.

The 13900KS is not a good buy. The only thing it has in its favour is "6GHz: wow". There is literally no other reason to buy it. I watched this review earlier today, which is, shall we say, not entirely positive about the chip.

Edit: I'm going to go for the mobo you suggest but the Z790 version, reason being it's not much dearer and it supports upto 7800 MHz ram (I will upgrade the RAM and GPU at some point). Well, all that is possible while getting better value for money too. In the end it's your money, but it doesn't seem like a good way to spend it to me.

As an example, here's a system that is far better than your original system, because it's cooler, upgradable, and in many ways faster.

You'd have to cancel and re-order probably in February to get the new fastest chips (and there's nothing of a similar ground-breaking nature coming for six months or so), but to my mind you'll spend your money much more wisely that way.

Frequency matters only on that architecture between processors in it's own group.

IPC (instructions per clock) is far more relevant between different architectures or manufacturers

AMD have a far higher IPC than Intel, so clock for clock, they achieve more, therefor, they may be lower frequencies, but perform better.

Hey thanks for the reality check guys :)

You're absolutely right, 6GHz isn't the most important thing and yeah why should I potentially waste money.
I've bookmarked that new spec sheet and I'm about to send a cancellation email to PCS.

Thanks again!

I'm genuinely expecting big things from the 7900X3D, I hope that it doesn't disappoint as it's going to be the one for me.

I'm a massive VR enthusiast also and have been rocking an overclocked 9900k since their release. It's served me well over the years but the X3D chips are going to be next level for me. I can't wait.

I think I'm going for the 7800X3D as I'm not bothered about productivity etc, only gaming. So you're into VR too? I love VR it's my main hobby, I have a Quest 2 and 8KX. I'm rocking an i7 7700K with a 4090 so as you can see I need an upgrade. Roll on X3D release!

As much as productivity isn't your bag, the 7900X3D sees quite the dramatic clock increase over the 7800X3D. The 7800 option is 5Ghz, where the 7900 is 5.6Ghz. The 7950 is 5.7, which is obviously diminishing returns.

VR can use a fair bit of processing chops in different ways to straight gaming so I think the extra cores and frequency bump are going to be worth it for me (I'm expecting around £200 difference).

You were on the exorbitantly priced 13900KS previously so I just presumed you were after the best :p

The 13600k is probably a more directly comparable chip to the 7700/7800 offerings.

I'm on an Valve Index at the moment. Hoping to pick out the V2 when it comes out, if it's worthwhile. I also have the Quest 2, which is great for Wireless play.

9900K with a 3070Ti, so nowhere near the grunt of your 4090.... but it fairs pretty well. A X3D chip with a 4090 will absolutely blitz VR. I'd love to see FS2020 with such a setup

We might have to see how they respond in actual gameplay. It seems the two-CCD chips (7950X3D/7900X3D) will run different speeds on the two CCDs, with the one with the extra cache running slower. So clock speed will probably be even less useful a metric than it already is with the new chips: the 7900X looks like it's faster, but that may be on the CCD that isn't being used for gaming and therefore it might be all much of a muchness. Maybe. Probably. We'll have to wait for benchmarks to find out. As ever, they matter much more than raw specs.

Yeah for sure, I wouldn't even be looking at the 7800X3D until I saw some numbers :D

Just thinking slightly outside of the box. I don't think there's any doubt that the 7900X3D is going to be better than the 7800X3D for gaming, the same as how the 7950X3D will be better than the 7900X3D for gaming. The question is going to be by how much of a margin and what the cost of that margin is going to be.

I don't think any manufacturer would make their lesser chips better at any particular area than their higher end, it wouldn't make any sense. I had actually considered if that was the reason for the 7800X3D only being 5Ghz, because it had the potential to be the absolute 1% for gaming over the more expensive offerings.

Look forward to seeing some OC numbers too :)

Afaik the 7900 is only 5.6GHz on 6 of it's cores (the non v-cached cores), the v-cached cores are 5 same as the 7800. But the 7800 has 8 v-cached cores. How this plays out in real terms, time will tell. Sensible thing for me to do would be to wait until reviews but doubt I will :D

Hey that looks awesome, I'd love a motion rig but I just don't have the space. I'm a big fan of sim racers, I have DR 2.0 plus most of the other racers. Think I like and use Assetto Corsa the most due to how well it runs in VR plus the mods it has.

Afaik all the X3D cpu's v-cached cores run at 5GHz and it's because of some physical limitation like heat build up. I don't think they're nerfing the 7800 so it performs less, it's just a limitation. But I agree that it makes sense the higher end chips perform better, maybe they will do at productivity, but I think (hope) they'll perform about the same at gaming.

I'm hoping to get Assetto Corsa set up for drag racing at some point. I just need to find the time to configure it all, not sure what's involved yet.

I loved iRacing but I didn't play it often enough to justify the price. It was absolutely fantastic though and the motion rig made it all so realistic.

For pick up and fun I love Project Cars 2, I haven't bothered with PC3 etc though, didn't see much point.

As I said above, the 7900X3D is listed as 5.6ghz and the 7950X3D is listed as 5.7Ghz..... we will just need to wait and see how they are configured and how they perform though, as we're guessing right now really :)
Yes and that is correct for 1 of the 2 CCD's on the chip, but the v-cached cores/CCD which will be used for gaming are running at 5GHz max. Some would say (me) it's slightly sneaky marketing by AMD :D. They're saying that Windows/apps like WinZip etc will use the 5.6/5.7GHz cores.

I tried iRacing, but i don't like how expensive it could be so didn't use it longer than 1 month. Yeh I like PC2 too, I like the physics in PC2 the most out of all them. Some people say the physics in PC2 is a bit arcadey but i found it to be the most realistic/satisfying when compared to the rest. I've been lucky enough to own some high powered cars and found PC2 (high bhp/RWD cars atleast) to be the most realistic. I have a G29 wheel/pedals/shifter/buttkicker.

Ahhh, was this confirmed by AMD? I wasn't sure if this was just rumour.

I really enjoy PC2. I understand what people say about it being slightly arcade like, especially coming from iRacing, but I really like the way the game feels. I love how aggressive turn-in is rewarded :ROFLMAO:

I just downloaded a tuned Supra in Assetto Corsa, so will see how it compares to the real thing later :D
